I really like the way the judges are processing the most popular items. Checking the top 200 to ensure that the mathematical difference between 1-89 and 90-200 really is consistent with the general quality of the items in those groups. And then treating the 89 items equally without taking into account the ranking within the "top 89". A very good approach, I think. :)
(I was slightly worried when there was talk about a "top 64" from which the top 32 would be selected. And also later when Vic said the judges will view only as many items as they need to find 32 "solid" entries.)

Well ... Just as the judges are expecting nothing but superstar quality in our entries -- I guess we expect them to go the extra mile in seeing those :)
And thanks @ CP for his "Judges" insight ... very cool :)

I'd be interested in how many times the items in the top 90 on average were viewed by a voter as that could provide insight into the variation in quality amongst the top 90. For example, if each item was viewed 50 times then while the strongest items might end up in the top 90 their relative position could still be significantly influenced by such factors as the tastes of the voters and the strength of items against which each item was compared.
Ziv Wities RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7 aka Standback |
Doug - absolutely. The strength of the system is not in finding precise rankings, e.g. "What's the internal ranking between the Top 10 items?". That internal ranking comes from a very small number of votes - the clearest example is that while the Top 2 items obviously did well in the overall voting, selecting which of the two was #1 and which was "merely" #2 could have been determined by a single voter.
At a larger scale, the order of the Top 10 or Top 30 should not be taken too seriously - it was determined by a very small number of votes, overall. What is important is that the votes placing these items in the top spots were many.
As Clark's described, you'd naturally expect informal "leagues" - these are the items that beat practically every item they were up against; these are the items that usually beat everybody but had a handful of items they lost to, these items got the "better" vote about 80% of the time... etc., etc. Any one of these leagues will be pretty clear from the final voting data, but the internal ranking within the league is likely to be pretty random.

Well, I feel certain a lot of people welcome Clark's teases and respond just like this in their heads...
"Okay. I think my name was really solid so I'm not 23. There's not hot/cold component. So it's not 68. 85 was "flawed but with big mojo". That might be right if they though your writing to cover possible abuse was clunky...

I know for sure you will see mine either way because I think it's my best bit of work yet :D
By the way - I am assuming "archerype" is a typo and not a clue to your tarzanian tree swinging ranger who holds vines with his feet and shoots arrows with his hands (or even vice versa) :P

Being pretty bad with names myself, I can relate to that feeling. :)

It's not that the name was bad. Rather, the name had in it the word "Map" and so I figured it was going to be one of the many lame map items we get every year and routinely discard.
So I voted to keep a map item this year. We'll see if it makes the cut (I'm not revealing how other judges felt).
AND if YOU submitted a map item, don't get yourself DQ'd by saying "it might be me, I submitted a map item!" and thereby break anonymity.
How's that for some teasing?

I think I speak for alot of us when I say that I really appreciate Clark taking the time to share these details. In the past he's answered my specific questions on the Necromancer Games forum and even responded to private e-mails I sent him. He's a terrific stand-up guy and we are very lucky to have him.

Joking aside, I think I may know what map item it is, too. There was one where I think I had a similar moment to Clark. "...Are you going to be exactly what I think you are? ...No? ...Oh, you're actually pretty neat. ...Actually...I think I quite like you."
Can't wait to see if I'm right tomorrow (assuming said item doesn't get veto'd by the rest of the judging panel).

I'm pretty sure we all have the same map item in mind, but it would be pretty funny if, come tomorrow, it turns out we're all talking about different items.
Anyway, while it didn't make my personal top 32, there was a map in my keep folder that I won't have any objections to seeing make the cut; it was a very neat item.
There were a number of items I wound up liking that I had the same reaction as Clark re: the mystery map. Items that didn't have a bad name, per se, but the name wound up putting me off enough by making presumptions about it that I thought I'd hate the item, and in fact started reading the text already assuming I'd be giving my vote to the one opposite, and it took me halfway through the item before I suddenly realized my expectations had been subverted and it was a pretty awesome entry after all.

If it's the map I'm thinking of, I thought it was a pretty cool idea... but I dropped it from my keep folder after contemplating the number and types of spells a PC would have to cast to produce an effect similar to that produced by the item. It was a bit too much for my taste.
EDIT: At this point in the thread, I suspect Clark is starting to regret mentioning the "map" item in this first place, even if it turns out that there are multiple items with "map" in the name.

Would that be this map:
Map of Imminent Danger
Aura moderate abjuration, enchantment; CL 11th
Slot none; Price 12,000 gp
This rolled-up piece of parchment is actually the prison of a devil. When the command word is spoken (typically, Map!), a cheerful face appears on it and it appears to be friendly and helpful. If you ask it how to get you to a destination, it will dutifully tell you a correct route to get there... but it will be a very circuitous route with at least three life-threatening encounters (CR/EL equal the level of the user), which it will identify. The user of the map finds himself incapable of taking a different route unless he succeeds at a Will save (DC 21).
Craft Wondrous Item, Knowledge (Geography) 5 ranks , lesser planar ally, misdirection; Cost 6,000 gp
;) Just kidding! Not an actual entry.

Whoo hoo! Practice food!
Backstory npc name in item name - eats a point,
Fixed template words not bold or missing entirely - has 4 point dinner.
2 points under custard for bad pricing - caster level & spell costs would indicate much higher price needed - it's trapping a devil, so should be quite high power wise!
Bad spell forming, misdirection doesn't have ranks!
Knowledge is in the feat part of construction.
Cost isn't half the price.
All points eaten in 20 seconds.
Thanks for the practice and early meal!
Bet you all missed me ;)

I'll torture you even further.
How's this for a maddening statement:
I think the community will be surprised by either the strong presence of or startling absence of a significant number of marathon voters being represented in the top 32.
I call shenanigans! You just said earlier that you judged anonymously and were therefore waiting along with everyone else to see who made it!
You must have taken a peek once the top 32 were settled. Couldn't help yourself huh? I don't think I'd be able to either. :p

I remember one map item. I believe that I saw it twice and up voted it once and down voted it once. The second time I thought the other one was better because I was concerned about the possibility of abuse and questions it would bring up at the table. Of course I'm probably thinking of the wrong item.
And that is just mean, Clark. But I guess this means they are fully selected and their anonymity for the judges have been dropped.
