Society: Core Classes or Advanced Classes

Advice

Hi there,

I want to create my first character for society play. I am a bit confused though. Is it ok to just create a class from the Core Rulebook or is it more standard to create a character of a more advanced or prestige class?
This would be my first Pathfinder character ever, so what is normally used here?

Cheers,

Malte

core classes are perfectly fine, especially for society play. Prestige classes are pretty rare tbh, but a lot of people do enjoy playing archetypes of the core classes (found in later books like APG, UM, and UC). You might also check out the classes in the advanced players guide. However, if it's your first character ever, I'd say pick a core class and get to know the game a bit before branching out too much.

Will do that.
Thanks Dukai.

Just remember, you can't take prestige classes at first level. You need to take a core or base class first, then move into a prestige class once you have the prerequisites.

Also, the classes from the Advanced Player's Guide aren't advanced classes, they're base classes. They aren't really any harder to play than the core classes (from the core rule book), just different.

Be aware that in Society play, you need to check the Additional Resources page to verify the legality of any non-Core material you want to use. And because GMs can't memorize EVERYTHING, you need to bring the source (either hard copy or PDFs) of any such material to the table and be ready to hand it to your GM to read if need be.

Also, piece of advice: if you're new to Pathfinder, play a cleric. Every table will welcome you, you can save money by being Core-only if you like, and it's a very strong and versatile class (seriously, people miss it because it's not the flashiest or because they think all it can do is heal, but it can be one of the strongest classes in the game). Since you can completely rebuild your PC any time before playing him above first level, you try a "caster cleric" (throwing around cause fear or other offensive spells), see if you like it, then rebuild into a "melee cleric" (high STR, prep bless in a couple slots, wreck some faces), see if you like it, then rebuild into a "support cleric" or a "negative channeler" or whatever for your final 1st-level game, see if you like it, then rebuild into whatever you liked best before showing up at 2nd level.

Anyway, welcome to Society, and have fun! :)
