Feature suggestion: secret societies?

I think it would be cool if in addition to guilds, you could be a part of a secret society. It would be separate from guilds, and people wouldn't be able to tell you were in the secret society unless you showed them an item, like a ring or letter or other identifier, or if they found that item on your body. I think it would add a level of intrigue to the game and wouldn't be too difficult to implement. What do you all think of the idea?

Consider the idea of a Guild in the typical MMO sense is not what PFO supports. A group of over a couple dozen are going to be an out-of-game organization. You can easily make a secret society in the same vein.

The "UnNamed Company" is conceptualized to be just that .... A Secret or Underworld society.

What it requires is a good deal of meta gaming and networking in and outside of the game. It also requires having all of your members to be on the same page. There are a variety of game mechanics that have to be accounted for.

First, one should toggle off (hide) guild affiliation. Nothing blows your cover like a floating sign above your head that say "I'm a Spy".

A much more complicated way of doing what you seek is to have your toon in one guild, publicly, but outside of the game you're really a part of another. This is super difficult in my opinion because you are not being honest with real people that you are playing with on a regular basis.

A third and less difficult method to set up is to have multiple characters in different guilds. Goblin Works has already announced that one of the perks of Kickstarter is that we can train two characters at once. This will lend itself well to those looking to play on both sides of the fence.

So, I wish you luck in your plans to create a secret society. I would gladly try to help you if you need any ideas or support in making it happen. Or, you are welcome to check my company / guild out and see what we are starting to build: The UnNamed Company

Depending on what you can do in game, their is no difference in being a guild or secret society. Unless the goal of this secret society also involves those in it not knowing each other.

A guild leader and to a lesser extent guild members are the only ones who know who is in the guild. Dont think I have played a game where those outside a guild have access to a member list of those in a guild. If the game gives you the option to remove any guild flags on your PC, then really their is no way to know. You would be no different then a non guilded PC, the fact that you carry an item unique to your group would be more of a give away in that case.

So while some guilds may want to be open that does not stop those guilds who would rather keep their connections secret if that simple option is placed in the game.

That's cool, that guild membership can be secret, but I think it would be cool to be able to have a secondary allegiance. Not necessarily in conflict with your guild, but not necessarily aligning with it 100% of the time either. I don't know, just a thought.

I think you could probably do it without adding anything to the mechanics and just using a website/forum for the secret society, as it's already secret, it's like they don't officially exist.

But if they did add a mechanic for it, I see no problem with it in concept. I can see lots of other uses for it too, guild, city, kingdom leaders etc having a council, a town's merchants having a trading council, even mages having a mages guild seperate from their company.

Same for thieves, universities, intelligence networks etc.

Now that I think about it, I would like the idea of a mechanism for societies in game, with an option for them to be secret xD.

It still is viable without in game support tho

Truth be told I would be more interested in society areas. Like giving said groups their own private places to gather. Sense those wilderness hideouts are kinda out of the way and honestly who wants to tell other people about it if they have one. ;P

It'd be neat I think, if it wasn't hard to implement. But maybe I just want to secret rings and signs.

Still, everyone likes some Free Masons and Illuminati and Templars.

Secret rings and signs are easy if they implement:

For rings, the ability to name crafted items.

For secret signs, the ability to custom emote, such as /me gives the sign of three devils.

Other uses for societies I can see: churches/priesthoods for the devout and clerics/paladins. I could see religious orders popping up with religious leaders giving decrees to the faithful, eg the followers of Iomidae joining a church of Iomidae and the high priest making decrees to be followed, calling the fairhful to arms for a crusade against demons etc.

While those faithful still get to be part of thrir chartered company. Hijacking the thread slightly :p

But the same thing also applies to secret religious cults and the like!

Exactly, I like the idea of using it for political organizations, religious cults, even not-so-secret societies like the Goblin Squad or the Pathfinder Society or trade societies like mapmakers or wizards, separate from your guild affiliation.

I want a secret society of dockworkers and land transport logistics similar to the Freemasons: the Freeloaders.

I like this idea.

I think a simple toggle next to each guild / chartered company / player nation you are a member of they could have a toggle: public, private, and member only notification. Really I think this would add alot to the game. It could also be countered by divination or skill checks to add a bit of danger to keeping secrets from your leaders. I like this idea as well.

It is reminiscent of the npc guilds that used to be in uo, but with much more to it in scope.

-Discuss bounty and assasination contracts. Get help from experienced hunters and cleaners, or find someone to take on a contract.
-Anti griefing: discuss ruthless ways to deal with the ruthless.
-Recruiting: find apprentices to follow you in your twisted trade.
-Venting: no holds barred ranting and raving.
-Lists: you know, the ones the devs won't allow on the official forums.
-Intelligence: a little espionage goes a long way.

Secret Order of the Bunny...

Make sure to wear your bunny ears to the secret meeting Tuesday.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If you make it an in-game organization, you have failed at the 'secret' portion. Why wear guild tag or a ring that can give you away? You just connect with people on an instant messenger program, using a completely different name that does't reflect that of any of your characters. If you need a way to make sure someone is in your society in-game, you private message them with a 'sign' word and they reply with the 'countersign'. Those words could change on a regular basis, or even be used just once and discarded for extra security. Really, even if GW added ways to make a secret society or a double agent in two guilds, any smart spy would avoid using that and instead move things into the realm of meta-communication that can't be detected from inside the game.

Were I member of a PFO secret society you wouldn't know about it.

Goblin Squad Member

I think it would be neat to be a member of a LG settlement but secretly you were a follower of Asmodeus or a member of an assassins guild that worked in or near that settlement.

Goblin Squad Member

Maybe it just me, granted I may get taken out for this, but if your a spy in PFO then the "real" you does not exist in that universe. If the "real" you is a spy outside PFO, then your not playing a game now are you. x3

Of course you're playing a game, the question is really whose rules you're playing by.

Right, but it would be nice to have a non-metagaming way to add this level of play. Then if you want to bring your intrigue to the out-of-game level, you can have your guild, your secret society/ies, and your outside stuff. And those of us who want to keep it in the game aren't left out of the spying game.
