Crafter pc

Advice

I've always like crafters but they didn't make it over to Pathfinder (Artificer, Effigy master, Techsmith, etc).

So my question is if I wanted to build a crafter what would folks recommend?

Also, I don't think there's a way to get something similar to a Gondsman (Techsmith) but figured I'd ask. I could make a construct and improve it, but that seems pretty expensive to do. Am I wrong about that?

If what you're after is one really cool construct, ask your GM if you could refluff the Summoner.

Soul forger magus archetype makes a great item crafter.

Shadow Lodge

Casters have a major advantage in crafting since everyone else needs an extra feat (Master Craftsman) and has a hard time meeting spell prerequisites for crafting.

Wizards also get bonus Craft feats, and as Int-based casters have a higher Spellcraft (your go-to if you're crafting more than one type of thing), so I think they've got the mechanical advantage. Check out the Arcanamirium Crafter variant on the Universalist Wizard, or the Arcane Builder and Staff-Like Wand arcane discoveries (you take these in place of feats).

I also get the sense that building constructs is generally not going to give the best kick for your coin, but I don't have the optimization know-how to back that up. Golem Constructor looks interesting for constructs, but if you're already picking up Craft Arms & Armor and Craft Wondrous (and you'll almost certainly want both), it's a waste compared to Craft Construct.

Soul Forger Magus has some great options for Weapons and Armor, but likely less versatile lacking the greater spell list of the wizard for prerequisites and the ability to take Craft feats as bonus feats.

Summoner would make a decent general crafter and Dasrak is right that a refluff could give you one cool "construct" on top of the ability to make a few other items.

There is a third party Artificer class by the by, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. I always thought it sounded like a cool and fun class to play.

Here.

Fluff wise the dwarf cleric archetype is a cool crafting guy. But ruleswise he is only really good at temporary item enhancements.

Sometimes that is all that is needed. Heck, look at the Magus.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the Artificer and am always weary of 3P stuff (remnants of the 3E days I guess). It's also weird how their last ability gives them a bonus to all non-trained rolls equal to half their class level, which means it's better to have no ranks in something than (1/2 level -3), which always seems awkward to me.

The magus one seems good and the dwarf decent (speedy crafting is fun).

I don't get how Arcanamirium Crafter works however. Not sure why metamagic feats would be needed with crafting? The other wizard things seem pretty boss (though probably better to take craft construct than golem constructor as you said).

looks like the metamagic part is explained better in the book, but still doesn't make much sense to me otherwise.

I found some other options:
Dwarf Wizard favored class (craft extra 200gp/day)
Ring of Craft Magic
Amazing Tools Of Manufacture

Are there any other good options for crafters I've missed in the recent books?

Never forget the Alchemist.

I'm getting a hell of a lot of mileage with my current character out of just one Item Creation feat invested (Craft Wondrous Item) combined with borrowing any missing spells from the Cleric and Wizard in the group. Combine that with the class bonus to Craft (Alchemy) and I've got a rapidly crafted and cheap solution to almost every problem.

How did you get Craft Wondrous Item? Alchemist don't count as casters?

Something to do with a reasonable DM, I imagine.

Drachasor has it right. My GM understands that a character who uses arcane magical energy to craft useful items (via class abilities) should be allowed to use arcane magical energy to craft useful items (via a feat). Quoting the official FAQ:

Is an alchemist a spellcaster for the purpose of crafting magic items other than potions?
As written, no, alchemists are not spellcasters, and therefore can't select feats such as Craft Wondrous Item.
The design team is aware that this creates some thematic problems with the idea of an alchemist creating golems and so on, and plan to examine this in the future.
