Subscription to free-to-play process question

Pathfinder Online

Silver Crusade

Hi,

Many of the MMO's I've purchased in the past that I had monthly subscriptions to, but then went free to play later in life, blocked me from being able to play characters on that account entirely because it was at one point a premium account.

I notice in the FAQ, the only real statement discussing subject says the following:

"During Beta the game will only be available to subscribers. In the long term we expect to have options for people to use microtransactions instead of subscriptions to play."

Does this mean there are no subscriptions at all?
Is it all F2P once you've purchased/crowdforged yourself a copy of the game?
Will this game be F2P in a limited sense for people who do not wish to pay anything?

I've pledged now, but I'm reluctant to keep it after considering my 'plight' with older MMO's that I once subscribed to that I now can't go back in to the occasional open night with time to burn.

Any insight on this subject is welcome. Thanks!

From what I heard Ryan say on Kickathon last night they have 2 targets

1. subscriptions, those will be in play starting with the enrollment and will give you full access. Once EE is over they are going to add the microtransatcion
2. after EE, Subscription and the F2P (microtransaction) model will come into play and people can choose (just like what SOE is doing with PS2 atm).

During Early Enrollment, subscription will be needed to play after the 'free' months are used up. However when Open Enrollment is started, you can either have a subscription or go microtransactions.

Ultimately what you are paying for on each option is 'Training' time.

I'll post the links for you to sink your teeth into:

Why beta is paid and more akin to early release:

In short:

  • Subs -> include debit system for skill-training time package (at a lower rate than purchased in smaller amounts) + other additions
MTX -> Micro-Transactions are also possible and also include purchasing units of skill-training less than a sub option.
  • It's not F2P at all: Though read more on the Skymetal system in "money changes everything".
  • Yes, in a sense of ceasing to buy skill-training. There is a upfront fee for the game also.

Thanks guys. I'm on the Adventurer level so I'll only be the OE Beta. The following are the quotes from Dancey that I pulled from the links above that helped me understand how this works a bit better.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
"After Release we'll have a lot of different options available for you to pay to play the game in increments less than a one-month subscription. Our goal is for you to be able to play the game at a cost that you're comfortable with, scaling up or down your level of participation based on your purchases."

"We are also intending to have a system where you can trade game-time with other players for in-game currency."

"Skymetal is going to be the name of our MTX microcurrancy. Everything you buy in the store will be purchased with Skymetal, including training time. Coin is our placeholder name for in-game currency. The only way to get Coin will be to earn it, or sell training time."
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm glad that I won't be bound by a monthly subscription in order to play. By that time, I'll be balancing time between PFO with Star Citizen, Pathfinder tabletop, and who knows what else grabs my attention. Yay!

Should be noted that the Open Enrollment is not a beta. It is the full launch of the game. The game will have three phases:

Alpha - Small number of people that include the Devs, Tech-demo alpha backers ($1000 level), Current kickstarter alpha backers ($1000+ crowd), and possible the friend/ family type hand picked by the devs. This phase is the major bug hunting section and will have very few systems in game.

Early Enrollment - This is the beta but not an open beta. The alpha people will be wiped (at least that's the assumption). The Crowdforger Pioneers and above ($100+) from this Kickstarter will begin here in waves of 2000 player or 200 guilds on a first backed first in monthly system. There will not be a character wipe and this is the stage that the systems will be introduced and the foundation of the game will be built. there will also be a monthly subscription (some will have a few free months based on backer level).

Open Enrollment - This is the official launch of the game and the server will be opened up to more player beyond the kickstarter backers($35+) (not sure on the numbers). The subscription model will remain an option and a micro-transaction model (Skymetal) will be added to work with the Free to Play (F2P) format.

It should also be noted that Early Enrollment is also being referred to as Beta. It's not a typical Beta, but then again, PFO is not a typical MMO :)

it is beta in the sense that we that are in it get to help forge what everyone sees one their first day in on release. other than that its pretty much just early access to the game before anyone else can get in.

At least that is my understanding of it. can't wait to see it :) EE here i come!

That is the Early Enrollment not the Open Enrollment. Again Open Enrollment is the real, official, no longer in development stage, launch of the game. The $35 Adventurer, $50 Music lovers, and $75 Loremaster backer levels get in here. They are not in the Early Enrollment (beta) stage. Radiarch stated that he was in the OE beta, unless the "OE" was a typo then he will not be in beta but launch.

Our backer level will determine which one we all will be in; <$1000 not in alpha (Alpha), <$100 not in beta (Early Enrollment), <$35 not in launch (Open Enrollment).

First, what Void Ronin said. I'm pretty sure you meant Early Enrollment, though.

Also, you're right in your description of Early Enrollment, I just wanted to make it clear that Goblinworks is referring to it as a Beta, so if people see GW talking about "Beta", I don't want them to get confused and think "Oh, that's not Early Enrollment", because it is.

True true, less confusion we have the better :). You and Valkenr really are shinning members of the community in my eyes. its inspiring lol.

Alpha is the dawn before recorded time.
Beta is the First Age.
Release is the Second Age.

Thank you very much :) I think I can safely speak for Valkenr (who is a Steward of The Seventh Veil, like me) when I say we both try very hard.
