New official main trailer released recently.
Also - movie synopsis from the web-page: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
I am excited as ever to see this movie! Simply for the mecha using a whole tanker as a sword to bash in giant monster I'll go watch it.
On the other hand, did Guillermo Del Toro have to put every anime cliché he could think of in it? All that's missing is that humanity wins because the monsters are afraid of bubble-gum pop songs or the "power of love." ;-)

Why bother even letting the giant lizard out of the water when you can fry it from 100 miles away?
Because it's awesome.
Realism is intentionally left at the door in these kinds of things.
And that's the flaw with this genre of movie. If you have to so completely let go of realism to this extent then you're going to alienate a HUGE chunk of your potential market. I can't get behind this, it hurts my widdle head to let go of that much.
It's not about reality, it's about an audience full of people screaming "JUST SHOOT IT IN THE FREAKING HEAD!!!"
Ah well, I can't stand soap operas either but people should be able to watch whatever makes them happy.
You guys enjoy yourself, I hope it's as great as you want it to be.

I have to say, while I'm a teetotaler, I find it hilariously appropriate that "Jaeger" when said in that preview sounds a bit like "Lager". Either may be an equally appropriate way to "cancel the apocalypse", at least if Wonderella is to be believed.
(Yes, I know it's not really Lager. Close enough for puns, though.)

Despite all the unintentional humor that will come from the American ignorance of the word, I feel compelled to point out for those that don't know: "jaeger" is German for "hunter."
Still, I look forward to all the eventual drinking games where jaegerbombs are slammed back at DVD showings of this movie, and the inevitable alcohol poisoning that will ensue.

So I just read the list of all of the Jaeger names over on TV Tropes and I feel like I'm 12 again.
I honestly can't read it without smiling.
■ Brawler Yukon
■ Cherno Alpha (Russia)
■ Chrome Brutus
■ Coyote Tango (Japan)
■ Crimson Typhoon (China)
■ Diablo Intercept (South America)
■ Echo Saber
■ Eden Assasin
■ Gipsy Danger (USA)
■ Horizon Brave (China)
■ Hydra Corinthian
■ Mammoth Apostle
■ Matador Fury (Mexico)
■ Nova Hyperion
■ Puma Real
■ Romeo Blue (USA)
■ Shaolin Rogue
■ Solar Prophet
■ Striker Eureka (Australia)
■ Tacit Ronin (German)
■ Vulcan Specter
It's really hard to pick a favorite. Mexico and South America are really strong contenders though.
edit-Oh God, Idris Elba is playing a general named Stacker Pentecost. This movie is pitch-perfect already. :D
srsly though, you might want to avoid the TV Trope page. Spoilery already.

Anybody looking forward to seeing Atlantic Rim?
For a The Asylum mockbuster, it doesn't look too bad. Heck their American Warships was better than Battleship, not that that is saying much.

Well, you can be offended for all of us.
I'm gonna go see the movie.
I wonder if there's work in that? Offended Credits?
Kinda works like carbon credits, where someone who couldn't care less or don't see offense in everything could pay someone else to feel offended for them?

Huh, I have never experienced that. Or anything similar, other than the audience breaking up into laughter, cheering, or applause. Never had an audience-wide negative reaction. Guess I should be thankful.

@Mikaze: Thanks for that list. Love the whole concept of it - it certainly adds to the anime "homage" Del Toro seems to be going for. I am definetly staying away from the Tropes page right now - trying to stay spolier free.
I am torn between Brawler Yukon (sounds Canadian); Mammoth Apostle (just awesome for a Giant Robot) and Tacit Ronin.
It definetly takes me back to the days of Robotech, Gundam, and Mazinger Z. I just hope we don't trail into too much Evangelion territory with the whole "linked pilots" concept.
And just remember, folks: Chicks Dig Giant Robots

Seriously you'll be very cautios about a movie because of a single word? Seriously?
I have to second that question. If something that minor is enough to get you to say you won't see the film, than how do you managed to find ANY entertainment material acceptable (to include the stuff Paizo puts out)?

Indeed. I thought I loved giant robots, these guys have been an inspiration.
Nah, trust me I'm not really that into mecha. But...there's something about the genre that does pick at a certain part of the human brain. It's like....I'm not really a car person, but there are moments on Top Gear that make me fall in love with them. :)
(the last "big robot" anime I've actually seen was Gurren Lagann, which really appealed to me on even more levels than that, and not just because it was a sort of anti-Evangelion either. ;) )

I really think there's be some of that feel, but the way everything is shaping up I'm really expecting more of the classic kaiju-flick feel with an undercurrent of Gurren Lagann's "ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER". :D
Also, Eden Assassin has really won me over now.
Yup. This sorta stuff puts me on edge, and makes me more analytical.
I want to say there's always the poosibility it's named after the flower. But the most likely case...
It's one of those words that has pretty much been embedded so long that most who use it do so with no malice but don't realize the negative history behind it. A sad case of a marginalized people having no power over the development of shared languages where their identity is involved. Who knows where it's going to go in another hundred years, whether it'll phase out in favor of Roma or if it'll be a future example of "taking it back".
Wow, language tangent.

When did I say I wouldn't see it?
I really, really wish they hadn't used the name Gipsy Danger. I'm somewhat more cautious about the film now, even though I adore Idris Elba and Ron Perlamn and Del Toro can usually do no wrong. Still intend to see the film, but I'm really saddened by this.
No media is perfect. Firefly is set is in a world where Chinese and American culture has merged, but has no Chinese cast members - only the occasional Chinese surname. It's still a great series, but watch the show looking for Asian characters. They're extras - exclusively in the poor scenes. Watch the episode Shindig. Look who all the rich, powerful people are. Now go back to the pilot, and watch when Serenity lands of Persephone. For those who don't know it's the same planet in both episodes. Now spot the problem. And seriously, don't order the dogs.
You guys can think I'm nuts, or over sensitive, or whatever. But the Roma consider Gypsy a slur. They get treated like second class citizens, they were a Nazi target during World War II (Somewhere between 20% and 30% of the Roma Population, an estimated 220,000 were killed during the Holocaust), they are significantly more likely to be raped and attacked just for being Roma, and they ask folks to stop using the word Gypsy? Fine. I can do that. Just like any other racial slur - if it hurts people, I don't use it. I can't imagine we'd even be having this conversation if the jaeger in question was called (Insert N-Word) Danger.
And I'm depressed it ended up as a the name of a major robot in a movie I was dying to see. That's it. I respect the Roma enough not to want to use a word they find offensive, and really, really wish they'd used almost any other word instead. I'm not saying it's an awful movie, that Del Toro secretly wants to destroy the Roma by representing them in a robot that gets beaten up, or something. It's almost certainly simple lack of knowledge. That doesn't mean it's a good thing, and just like any other word that's a slur, it sets me on edge.

Because there are enough that dislike the term that I feel I should respect there choice? Again, it's simply a case of a bad term being used in ignorance, but it makes me more analytical. I'm not saying you can't like the movie, that it's in someway bad, just that it's a crappy choice in name that will make me pay more attention to any other issues in the movie, such as all the non-whjite cast die first would raise a trigger, for example, or the sudden but inevitable betrayal is by a non-white guy. Stuff like that.

Augh, a certain otherwise really fun X-Men movie got hit by that. :(
