Magus Tank

Advice

Sovereign Court

Hello all, I'm currently playing a magus in a campaign. For better or worse, I'm the only melee character, and need some preventative means to defend the squishier ranged characters. Keeping myself alive isn't too great of a challenge, but are there any spells I can take with expanded study or items to invest in to guard my allies more effectively?

Off the top of my head I'd say grab the 2nd level spell: Web. Has a big AoE effect, if they make their saves all that area is difficult terrain. If they fail, they're stuck till they break free.

Mirror Image, Shield are some helpers. Miss chance can also help if you can get it.

PS both mentioned spells are on the magus spell list.

the magus already has a number of spells that can help with this. First among them is enlarge person. If you are bigger you control a bigger area that enemies have to get through to get to your allies. Mirror image and sheild make you harder to hit. And control spells like grease and web further make it hard to get around you.

If you are looking to grab additional spells to help with that I strongly recommend the pit line of spells, but dont use them to catch enemies, put it in front of your enemies, channeling them to your hopefully enlarged self.

Use a whip to trip as way help control the battle field .

The is a spell in UC that let's you cast spells in melee without fear of AoO unless they have Disruptive feat. It is a lvl 1 spell.

I was looking more for things that could let me cover or intervene for my allies. Web is a really good spell.

Look into Ablative Barrier (lvl 2 spell). Though it doesn't let you cover for allies per se, it will help them increase their survability

Also, consider Bladed Dash (lvl 2 spell) so you can charge straight into the enemies and keep them away from your allies

Pilfering hand will disarm an enemy, which also helps with battlefield control

Besides that, the pit spells mentioned above are fantastic.

What is the rest of your party's composition? If you are the only melee, the rest of your team should have plenty of spells and abilities to hinder enemy movements...

Ranged fighter, crossbow rogue, and a bard.

You can use grease to make part of the battlefield difficult to cross so the foes have to either mess with you, cross the grease or go the long way around where your ranged buddies can shoot/cast at them.
For added fun use a flask of acid as power component so crossing the grease hurts.
