Is the fly speed for Jager coming from items?

And do the swim and climb speeds for Lumi also come from items?

Yes to 2 of the 3. however, Lumi's swim speed comes from a cheesy alternate racial ability found in blood of angels that came at the cost of her spell like ability.

Lumi's speeds are passive, and Lumi just got air walk. so now she has a fly speed of 40 as well for a 4th level slot.

Jager has to activates his by expending charges.

My group just got underway, hitting level 2 at the end of tonight's game.

  • C/G Human Gunslinger(Buccaneer/Pistolero) - A charismatic fellow, out to make his name and his fortune on the high seas.

  • L/N Human Monk(Four Winds)- She found records of a long lost monastery in the Shackles which was established by the founder of her order and set out to find it.

  • L/N Human Inquisitor - Descendent of a famous pirate/adventurer, he seeks to build his reputation and defend his family's honor at sea.

  • L/N Halfling Bard - Seek adventure, tell tall tales, and leave your life as the tallest tale of them all for future generations of pirates!

  • C/N Elven Magus - Enigmatic. (This player isn't very vocal about roleplaying elements, so it will take me a while to learn his character's personality.)

Silver Crusade

- Mundir 'Gannet' Quais, M Elf Gunslinger. My character. Aiming to someday build CANNONS for the ship. Spock to Quincy's Kirk. Int and Dex are his primary stats. Took the Spirit of the Waters alternate racial trait.

- Crull Gutterax, M Human Barbarian (Sea Reaver). The brute. Terrifying in melee. The Worf.

- Quincy Dawkins, M Human Rogue (Pirate), Son of a notorious Pirate captain, seeking to follow in his father's footsteps. He's the dashing, inspirational one. James T. Kirk in a puffy shirt.

- Eornic Magnad, M Human Cleric of Gozreh. The spiritual one.

- Lendis Saquin, M Human Witch (Sea Witch). Spooky.

- Shivikah, F Human Fighter. Focusing on combat expertise. The balanced one.

- Zahur, M Human Bard. The newest addition. Convinced to join the mutiny after he was added to the crew from the Man's Promise.

We're all 2nd level right now.

Where we are:
We're in the midst of the mutiny against Plugg and Scourge.

The current roster stuck on Bonewrack Island.

Samrow Seaspirit LE Tengu Fighter (Corsair), a bird of discipline, pluck and drive. Samrow is organised (some would say anally retentive) and keeps a list of the party's spare supplies and enemies. He served as the Quartermaster on the Misty Mourning before it was sunk by the Chels.

Peter Backbeard N Dwarf White-Haired Witch, a treasure obsessed dwarf with a Compsognothus familiar named Compy. Backbeard was a passenger on the Misty Mourning booking passage to Port Peril to buy a treasure map to some lost ruins of Ghol-Ghan. Slept with Grok, and was heart broken when they had to leave.

Sally Dread-Morgan CN Half-Elf Bard (Buccaneer), a storyteller in her own right Sally is equally likely to use her charms or her sword to get her way. She was on the Misty Mourning trying to learn lost stories of the Pirate Cap'n Morgan and perhaps learn if he was her father. A big hand in influencing the crew.

Buttons N Half-Orc Juju Oracle. The wendifa of a Mwangi tribe, she was sent on a spirit journey into the Shackles by the wendo. Hired onto the Misty Mourning to keep away bad spirits. Her intense, supernatural glare and strange hauntings that happen around her freak people out but her ability to make the best decision in each situation make her top contender for captaincy after the mutiny. Is obsessed with buttons and may have slept with Harrigan to obtain one of his.

Azaz Brinestalker N Gilman Ranger, fished out of the ocean after being attacked by were-sharks and their mundane pets, he had his lost leg replaced by a piece of the wormwood. Forever linking him to Harrigan's ship. (Joined the campaign in session 2)

Crimson Cogward CN Human Rogue (Thug), a dockside brawler Cogward volunteered to join the Wormwood crew. He changed his mind after experiencing the conditions on the boat. He has thrown his lot in with the Misty Mourners in order to improve his own conditions and maybe make time with Sally Dread-Morgan. (Had a 6th player join he's brand new to the game so I pregenned a crewmate. He loves being a le to hit people with whatever is around).

I don't think you guys have advanced too many levels but how has that White Haired Witch been in actual play? I think it is cool, but mechanics wise it seems like it would have issues, particularly as you level.

I feel for the dwarf about Grok. She's a real sweetheart.

Level 3 now and hasn't failed to hit or trip yet except against Grindylows. I'm keeping an eye on it, and allowed him to take normal Hexes in place of Rogue tricks at level 10+. I might allow him to take a magic item (beard ring) that he can enchant like a weapon to keep up on attack rolls. So far he really enjoys it, especially when he Enlarges (for the size bonus/reach).

This isn't really a discussion of that archetype, but I was also wondering if you could deliver touch attacks with the hair. That reach with the hair makes me think of a build built around Vampiric Touch or something. Maybe Touch of Idiocy too. Lot of good spells that are normally risky for casters (except the odd Magus or Eldritch Knight type.

Sze-Suin (ZAY-swan), a white-haired Tian female Human Sea-Singer Bard who serves as our captain.

Molgrim, an Invulnerable Rager/Urban Barbarian who is our Bosun and Master-at-Arms.

Ketta, the most viscious little Elven Rogue (Scout & Knife Master) that you've ever met - really some of the very best scenes we've had have been inspired by her play. She's Molgrim's second and in charge of the night's watch.

Athis, a Half-Elven Master Summoner who serves as our pilot and navigator - having an eidolon who can fly, swim, breathe underwater, has darkvision and can communicate telepathically has proven utterly invaluable... as has been the ability to summon air and water elementals when fighting underwater or ship-to-ship.

Other notable members of our crew:

Sandara Quinn serves as our ship's surgeon and healer.

Rosie Cuswell was Molgrim's second for a while until we gave her the Thresher as her own ship.

Aron Ivy (whom was rescued in a twist on the was the adventure was written) became ship's carpenter and as eventually put in charge of building the ship that would go on to become the iconic Sea Fox (with a little help from the Master of gales).

Mardus Siggs was originally a hostage and has become cabin boy to our captain.

By the way, this is without a doubt my absolute favorite AP so far... and I'm giving some serious thought to actually attempting to novelize our adventures, they've been THAT good.

I rule yes you can deliver touch attacks via the hair/beard.

We're level 4, just finished at Rickety's Squibs.

Mick Meadowlark - M tiefling Rgr4(Freebooter) - Elected captain of the newly christened Whore's Promise. Has begun a sexual relationship with Sandara and has become known as Mick the Merciless for his brutal pummeling of Owlbear, and Mick the Stick for his use of the boarding pike in combat.

Pepper - F human Ftr4(Corsair) - Quartermaster. Orderly and lethal with a rapier, people tend to end up dead around her, whether she wants them to or not.

Timpsy-zim Ninetails - F catfolk Rog4(Smuggler) - Master-at-arms. Could have been captain but chose to manipulate the crew from behind the scenes. Aunt was a notorious pirate captain whose reputation she hopes to exceed.

Papa Nua - M human Ora4(Haunted) - Ship's mage. A wannabe voodoo priest with a flair for the dramatic. After contracting and surviving ghoul fever, has been cursed with a black spot on his hand and visions of a ghost ship teeming with undead.

Ska'bris - M sahuagin Drd3/Ftr1 - Boatswain. A naturalist who's grown beyond his kin's need to conquer and slay, but is not above eating the occasional enemy. Has a pet shark named Baloney.

My players have a (mostly) interesting group. Here's a list (Possibly a few spoilers):

Free Captain Athas "Blackfire" Thrune:

Spoiler:
A Tiefling bastard of the Thrune family from Cheliax, Athas "Blackfire" does not make his noble heritage well known. He fled his homeland for his treatment as a second class citizen and made a new life for himself among the pirates of the shackles. Press ganged into Barnabas Harrigan's crew, he took to his role and became a rigger, but slowly gathered the loyalty of most of the Wormwood crew, using the promise of wealth and freedom opposed to beatings at the hands of Plugg and Scourge to draw them to his side. When the time came, they overwhelmingly defeated the arrogant Plugg and his lackey, taking the Mans Promise as their prize, renamed the Maid's Betrayal. But Athas did not stop here. Seeking revenge against his native Cheliax for his poor treatment, Athas raided ship after Chelish ship until he came across the massive and unassailable Dominator. Seeking to take it as his own flagship, Athas devised a plan that was just crazy enough to work. I won't go into the entire tale here, because it could fill a thread by itself, but I will say that it succeeded brilliantly thanks to a very lucky sequence of events and Athas now styles himself Commodore Blackfire, Free Captain of the Shackles and Captain of the DominatED.

Athas follows the path of a Ninja, serving as the parties eyes and ears, and striking unseen while his former First Mate draws their attention.

Captain Darynd Flynt:

Spoiler:
Darynd is a pirate through-and-through. Born in a small town to a disgraced family, he set out to prove his worth and reclaim his family honor. After being press ganged into service on board the Wormwood, Flynt swiftly distinguished himself as a no-nonsense sailor, standing up to Scourge and Plugg's abuses and taking punishment like a boss. He is a fighter, skilled in martial combat, and training as a corsair, which made him a natural choice when boarding the Mans Promise. He personally killed Scourge during the mutiny. Currently in command of the Maid's Betrayal, Captain Flynt once served as Free Captain Blackfire's first mate, but when a newer, grander ship was captured Flynt was given his first command. Since then he has sailed under the Blackfire Flag as a loyal supporter of his former captain.

First Mate Selek:

Spoiler:
A relatively new addition to the party, replacing The Old Man who was lost at sea during the Free Captain's Regatta. Selek was a member of another crew in the race, but his ship was sunk by Harrigan's Wormwood and we was barely dragged from the sea with his life. As a boy, his leg was taken by a shark, but years of practice with his wooden replacement have given him near normal mobility. He follows the path of the Magus, using a whip to keep foes at bay as well as dole out punishment on the Maid's Betrayal, where he serves as Captain Flynt's first mate. Flynt does not know the whole story, but Selek has a reason for choosing to follow him directly instead of Captain Blackfire. He knew Flynt's father, though how much information he will choose to give up regarding that particular piece of his past is not yet known.

Preacher Salt:

Spoiler:
Salt is an Oracle of the Waves, and the least interesting member of my party's crew. Unfortunately his player is not very adept at coming up with character traits or a backstory, so Salt is Salt. An Oracle and a healbot for the party, despite my best efforts to make more of him.

The Old Man:

Spoiler:
The old Man is a terrifying spectacle to behold. Tall, thin and elderly, he appears far more frail than he actually is. A practitioner of the dark arts and a loyal servant of Charon, The Old man was once a skilled sailor. He spend decades serving on all manner of vessels, but when a freak storm left him adrift at sea for days, he was certain his death was imminent. If it had not been for a chance encounter with the crew of the Wormwood while Athas, Darynd and Salt were out collecting crabs for Harrigan's supper, The Old Man's grim predictions would have come true. He dedicated his life to Charon from that point on, and followed the path of a Wizard, delving deeper into dark magic in an effort to extend his waning life. As his power grew, his terrible desires became more apparent to the party, and when he struck down the path of the Souldrinker Darynd outright forbade him from setting foot on the Maid's Betrayal. Athas sought to harness his thirst for souls and channel them against the agents of Cheliax, but that was not enough to sate The Old Man's desires. He needed more to stave off death eternal. He sought to become the ultimate agent of Charon on the sea; sought with his blessing to become a lich and send souls to his master for centuries to come. Sadly he was struck low by the magic of Peppery Longfarthing before he could realize his plans, and a freak wave sent his corpse overboard to an icy grave never to be seen again. Or did it.....

The Man's Promise just left the Wormwood behind. At that moment, my crew includes:

Ragnar, an Ulfen cleric of Besmara. The most capable sailor as well as leader, he has the best profile to become captain. He seems to be a chosen of his goddess, the waves are his home.

Krkrr "the twig", a goblin gunslinger with an oversized pepperbox and a peg leg (his leg was eaten by a shark). Only speaks goblin for now, which led to interesting situations aboard the Wormwood.

Anak Masal Turgut is a hobgoblin ranger/fighter, with connections to Ilizmagorti. He fled the island with a pair of sawtooth sabers his (now dead) brother once brought home, with the intent of mastering them. Acts as translator for Krkrr. Cut-Throat Grok's "lover" (for lack of a better word to describe their strange relationship), but he had to leave her aboard the Wormwood.

Ochril, an Azata-blooded aasimar bard following Cayden Cailean. The most sociable figure in the group, he managed to start a lot of friendships on the Wormwood due to his (interested) helpful attitude. His blood comes from his father, but he doesn't know the first thing about him... yet.

Akemi, a Tian sea witch.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

While I'm unsure of their characters' names (I'm a horrible DM. haha), we have an interesting lineup. We're only on day 4 so far. I've given each of them nicknames on the ship, even if I can't remember their character's actual name.

'Leatherback', Hobgoblin Pistolero (Gunslinger) - Known by this name due to a combination of his +1 Natural Armor racial trait, and constantly getting whipped by Scourge and/or Plugg. Also known to have ripped the ear off of one of the other crewmates after beating them senseless.

'Fishbait', Undine Rogue - This name came about due to him being tied to a rope and dunked in the ocean to allow his fast healing 2/level/day to bring him from unconciousness. He's the cook's assistant, and has already developed an addicition to rum due to constant bull sessions.

'Sweetlips', Halfling Cleric - The most charismatic of the bunch, he's already sweet talked his way into numerous friendships (Not least of which was the quartermaster), and currently has his eyes on Rosie.

'The Beard', Dwarf Witch - Named for his.. 10ft long permanently animated beard (with a mind of its own). He also has a peg leg, and has an octopus familiar which he usually keeps in a bucket on his back.

'Nibbles', Human Fighter - Climbed the rigging using his teeth, beating everyone but the gunslinger, even though they had a 5-round headstart. Also known to smash things with his heavy flail.

'Plunger', Human Summoner - Known because he's constantly organizing bets during the pirate games and other activities. (Plunger is apparently a synonym for bookie) Also works in the Bilges often. Also addicted to Rum.

We're going to begin this AP next week and right now my players's team consists of:
- A juju oracle from Mwange cove;
- A mwangi freebooter ranger;
- A Tian samourai/sword saint
- An halfling rogue cook (well, an halfling!!!)
and a female varisian bard/seasinger!
Looks like a fine crew of pirates, two of them are former slaves and therefore not too big on slavery, they look quite nice for pirates(most of them are NG,but I think time and experience will change that!).
Ready to board!

We are playing a E6, with common firearm. Our new party consist of:

Captain ''Redback'' Rolfsnurre : A peglegged ulfen grenadier alchemist. Captain of Besmara's Promise. Known by this name because he lost his shirt at a game of liar's dice and never found another one. His back is now red from sunburn. He was really hated by scourge, but loved by everyone. He flirted with Sandara for a long time, but she left... He love redhead, rum and tabacco.

Doctor Dieudonné ''Sweatbox'': A clumsy Sargavan half-orc sea witch, not fit to be a sailor. He wasn't successful with any job, so he was whipped and placed in the sweatbox so many time. He was hated by Grok for his lack of delicacy...

First-mate Aegis ''Arrowhead'': A garuda aasimar falconneer ranger bow specialized from rahadoum. Known by this name because he is a killing monster with a bow. Not really loved, nor hated. He isn't really talkative.

Claude ''as himself'': The falcon... (just check the theme of ''The adventures of Sinbad'' to understand the ''As himself'' part)

''Tidalwave'' Anamastirai: A tempest druid undine. Known by this name because she bullrushed everyone with hydrolic push during the Man's promise assault. Not really a good drinker.

My group is playing this as a side-game, so we're only level 2

Sabine AKA Madame Octava AKA Tala AKA Allison AKA Marta AKA The Dread Pirate Roberta CN: Slyph Rogue 2 Owes her soul to Moloch and takes on a different disguise every day or so. Attempts to use Bluff for everything, including cooking, with limited success, and flatly denies the existence of whatever personalities she currently isn't.

Robert CN: Bard 2 Attempted to fade in the background but instead showed too much competence. Appointed party pseudo-leader

Yalilsquirt CN Ranger 1 Rogue 1 Resident stowaway. People around her have a strange habit of falling overboard.

Tim CN: Oracle 2 No one's sure if 63 year old Tim is a he or a she underneath all that wither and disease. Tim probably isn't sure. Doesn't have enough CHA to cast, but has excellent surgical skills. Capable of outstanding feats of DEX when the chips are down. Somehow.

Former PCs
Unnamed child-halfling CE: Oracle 2 Extreme masochist, worships demons, nearly committed suicide. Very disturbing.

Future PCs
Marax LN: Cleric 1 Rogue 1 Tiefling who believes himself a descendant of Mephistopheles. Not evil, just lawful with Daddy issues. Works as a covert operator to take out demon worshiping cults.

Liberty's Edge

"One Fang" Rakish and roguish tiefling pirate with aspirations of being a legendary captain just like his father.
"Shakes" Gnomish alchemist and aspiring siege engineer.
"Tiny" A giant of man missing his tongue, a sea barbarian and former slave.
"Doc" A crusty rum soaked ranger who alternates between cook and saw bones.

Dark Archive

"Captain Darius"Ironically, caught in a soul gem and is only able to manifest himself forth for 3 rounds each day. The captaincy of the "Hellborne Fury" has passed ceremoniously to Romska. Darius is an elven Wizard

"Romska" The female current captain of the Hellborne Fury, she is married to the lady Smythee and has a demon arm to replace the arm that was lost in the abyss. She also got hit in the head with a magical trident and her head is now made of coral. Romska is a human rogue and having moved to Alaska, Romska's captaincy may pass to Roltair, the first mate.

"Roltair" A freebooter ranger, who became an alchemist and is now a demoniac of Haagenti. He is level 10 and also the first mate of the ship. Grafted Romska's demon arm to her when the ship visited the Abyss. Has a giant Locathah eyeball to replace his left eye...long story.

"Sandor" The monk/cleric with a peg leg. The pirate was rescued by the crew in the abyss after he mysteriously wound up there after the ship he was pressganged on was defeated in battle. His former captain is Whalebone Pilk, but he has little recollection of the time spent on Whalebone's crew. He is the ship's physician to replace Sandra after she died in the abyss and was resurrected as a demon slave to man "demonwing" the crew's alternate ship.

"Antubis" The quartermaster of the Fury, Antubis is a new addition to the crew and eager to take the quartermaster duties from Poop-Deck Pete.

"The Wall - Ren Kyr" Half orc, barbarian, wears a spiked chain wrapped around his face with the ends dripping blood from a curse. The Boatswain of the Hellborne Fury, he intimidates the crew into behaving. Beats people and monsters with aplomb. Alternate lover of Tessa Fairwind when Sanctus cannot meet her needs.

"Sanctus" The halfling inner-sea pirate. He is the ship's lookout and is a master with a heavy crossbow. He'll put a bolt through your eye at 300 yards in a mean squall. He's evil and also the plaything of Tessa Fairwind when he's up to the challenge. Unfortunately his lackluster constitution means that occasionally she will boot him out and call for "The Wall".

"Poop-deck Pete" Occasional member of the crew. He has been fired from many positions on board the ship. He currently is the ship's cook when he shows up to play. He is a fighter/cleric and like besmara, his patron, he randomly conducts his duties and is aloof at all times. hell of a fighter though.

"Shadow" The enigmatic tiefling blackblade magus and eldritch knight. He was somehow summoned by the trapped wizard Darius and now bears the soul-stone that has Darius inside of it. Shadow is bearing the stone to eventually find a way to let his master Darius out. An expert sailor, Shadow is the helmsman of the Hellborne Fury.

Liberty's Edge

The Crew of the Woman's Lie:

Free Captain Jhang Kelket- Level 9 Human Druid- the son of an infamous pirate, he felt compelled to seek out his destiny on the high seas. Alongside his trust serpent, Tonga, he has proven a versatile, creative, and ruthless commander. His word is the unquestioned law on the Woman's Lie, and he has so far proved his merit in plunder and fame.

First Mate Vernon Bluesky- Level 9 Human Cleric of Besmara- Devoted Patron of the Pirate Lord Besmaro (yes, you read that right), Vernon is a peerless sailor and has guided the Woman's lie with a steady hand (just the one, the other being forfeit to a ghastly undead), and tends to the spiritual needs of the men and women under his command. His Cult of the Pirate Lord grows in influence daily.

Ti the Brown Level 9 Human Pirate Rogue- is a skilled swashbuckler and storyteller, equally quick with a quip or a blade. His daring tactics and rugged good looks (accentuated by a rakish scar that destroyed one eyeball) have won him the interest of many of the finer women (and some men) in the Shackles.

The Mighty Hoku Level 9 Human Invulnerable Rager- is a massive mwangi man, bordering on the morbidly obese. Apart from his sizable bulk, his most distinguishing features are his massive collection of scars (some ritual, most obviously gained in combat) and his constant use of the third person to refer to himself. He is steadfastly convinced that he is the greatest Mwangi warrior alive or dead, and so far has yet to be proved wrong.

Cordax the Cryomancer Level 9 Human Staff Magus- is the newest addition to the crew, replacing a recently fallen comrade. While relatively untested in battle, he promises to provide an arcane edge to this hardened crew. What brings him from his frozen homeland in the Land of the Mammoth Lords to the Shackles is yet unknown.

Ti the Brown.....best name ever. Give your player props.

I'm the GM. The PCs mutinied on the second night on the Man's Promise. They're currently on Bonewrack Isle attempting to rescue Sandara and Conchobhar.

They've decided to name their ship Ghostblade once they get it squibbed.

The PCs (they used the purchase method w/ 20 pts):

Tatsuyo Angel-blooded Aasimar Ninja 3 (from Genzai in the Ushinawa Isles). He's the new Captain. Specializes in invisibility. Survived a trip to the bilges with Slippery Syl and Fipps Chumlett by kicking out the lantern and knocking them unconscious with his fists in the dark.
(Note: I dropped the Aasimar's SLA to make the race more in-line with the others.)
S 16, D 16, C 12, I 10, W 8, Ch 16

Rokdar Half-orc Rogue (Thug) 3 (from The Hold of Belzken). He's the new Bosun. Specializes in Intimidation (Dazzling Display w/ his Greataxe), not to mention biting people. A real savage. Threw several sailors overboard while taking the Man's Promise.
S 16, D 14, C 14, I 10, W 10, Ch 14

Kazarian Human (Ulfen/Varisian) Magus 3 (from Riddleport in Varisia). He's the new First Mate/Master-At-Arms. The only spellcaster in the group and favors the cutlass. Dived into the water to save Tilly Bracket when she was swept out to sea during the first storm on the Wormwood.
S 15, D 14, C 14, I 17, W 8, Ch 8

Shark Swimmer Human (Shoanti) Fighter (Corsair) 3 (from Port Peril. Grandson of famous Free Captain Sea Terror who founded a small Shoanti community in Port Peril when he retired). He's the new Master Gunner. Has mastered tripping opponents and plans on branching out into Ship's Weapons at 4th. Proved that his name was apt when he was knocked overboard while taking the Man's Promise and avoided the sharks.
S 16, D 14, C 14, I 13, W 12, Ch 10

if you are so worried about the power of a given race, increase the point buy all around. even if you don't subtract RP from buy points, the power of a given race, matters a lot less when your characters receive a huge amount of points. a 25-30 point allotment makes race a lot less important.

I wasn't worried. Dropping the SLA put him in the ballpark.

I actually adjusted a number of the races that I allowed the players to choose from. Some down (like the Aasimar) and some up (like the Kobold).

I found it interesting that only one player chose a non-core race.

I even created a feat (Otherworldly Power) that would allow him to gain the SLA if he so desired! :)

And the Point Buy was only 20 (High Fantasy).

20-pt buy, 3 Hero Points off the hop. Considering just letting them refresh to 3 each level. We've completed Day 5. The Hero Points are nearly depleted for a few characters.

Dramatis Personae (in order of increasing disciplinary action):

Lionel Ulyses Caleb Killick
Male Halfling, escaped Cheliaxian slave.
Level 1 Rigger, but not a bad rogue either as evidenced by his stealthy immunity to the rum ration.

Spoiler:
Unrelated note: There must be something powerful in the mop bucket because those decks sure are clean! No disciplinary action but bad luck in the bilges attempting acrobatics out of a threatened square left him unconscious at the start of the dire rat encounter and nearly devoured on Day 4. On Day 6 (next time we play), he will feel the effects of his infected wounds as filth fever will make itself known.

Firix 'Gray-tips' Drakethorne
Male Half-Drow, exiled from the Darklands out of shame by his upwardly-mobile mother but not without direction: She did let her son know that his sire is a dashing buccaneer who sails the surface seas under the moniker 'Iron Bert'. Maybe the impure offspring will fare better in his father's opportunistic culture.
Level 1 Swab, but may pass himself off as a cavalier

Spoiler:
if he can recover his banner from the quartermaster.
In an attempt to get "foreigner leniency", he has feigned ignorance of the Common tongue. Consequently, most of the crew do not know his name and thus call him Gray-tips due to his ears. No disciplinary action suffered yet though he will be sentenced to 6 lashes next bloody hour for being caught red-handed abusing his rum overboard.
His filth fever will have served its onset period in time to bloom for the impending storm in a few days.

Razmira
Female Suli slave. Was en route from Qadira to Mediogalt destined for virginal services as an offering in some ritual but "liberated" by the Wormwood. The current object of Mr Scourge's lecherous obsession.
Level 1 Cook's Mate but is emerging as a sorceress.

Spoiler:
She volunteered for the position believing she would spare herself hard labour in the other roles. Boy, did that backfire: Kroop has been useless 4 days out of 5. No ranks in cooking. 6 rope bashes for failed cooking. Has been pardoned another 6 rope bashes for her performance in the bilges vs rats. 6 lashes for casting spell vs crew mates and 6 lashes for brandishing weapons vs crew mates (both on Day 2's bullying attempt). She still has to serve her escrow of 3 lashes. She was the only one to end the rat encounter conscious and without contracting filth fever.

Davor
Male Half-Orc exile.
Level 1 Swab but his actions betray training as a monk.

Spoiler:
On the run with a few survivors after dwarves decimated their tribe, he was sent by his mother to better his luck among his father's people. She did not know much about him but he won her over with the boast of recent (at the time) exploits earning him an impregnable tower called Tidewater Rock. Surely he would be safe from dwarven incursions there while he trained up to exact retribution?
He has "waxed on, waxed off" his way to fatigued twice working the aptly named holystones. Has earned 6 rope bashes for falling asleep, too fatigued to notice he left his rum tankard untouched. He has earned the sweatbox for insubordination, insisting on taking the lovely Razmira's lashes the first time. That nearly killed him. He has earned bonuses to fear and respect from the crew by so efficiently schooling Owlbear, only to be promptly sentenced to the sweatbox again for asking the Captain (gasp!) whether to thumb-up or thumb-down the brute. He was fatigued going in, so will be exhausted when he comes out, if he lives. Oh, and his filth fever is also due to express at the same time as the storm.

The crew (and more importantly, Captain Harrigan) are unaware for the moment of both Drakethorne's and Davor's Buccaneer Blood traits, as are the PCs unaware of each-other's. Should be good! :P

Liberty's Edge

Olaria - Human rogue captain whose mother has convinced her her father is Cayden Cailean.

Bad Luck Chuck - Human rogue, pickpocket type

Lumiere Dawnbringer's Updated Party

Malik; male Drow Rogue/Assassin 13. worships Norgober, other than dealing with traps and serving as a damage sponge, he is pretty much useless. played by Matt. Boatswain survives by not being a threat

Captain Roargar "The Lucky" Male Dwarven Fighter 13 with Twin Sawtoothed Sabres. doesn't have power attack due to DM houseruling that weapon finesse and power attack don't work together. pretty much deals with DR poorly and a lot weaker when he cannot full attack. people only attack him because he is an infamous captain

First Mate Dremm Male Halfling Witch 13. the first mate, and the cook. mostly a blaster with a poor spell selection. played by kevin. has a monkey familiar

??? Female Elf Evoker 13 played by aaron, loves those empowered maximized fireballs. Role Unknown. has a raven familiar

Jager; Male Nagaji Dual Cursed Waves Oracle 13; frontline combatant, wields a longspear, secondary healer in a pinch, played by Javier

Bruce; Male Ulfen (Formerly Tian) Human Wereshark Invulnerable Rager Barbarian 13. wields a katana in both hands, poor AC, deals lots of damage. Reincarnated, Sandara's Dog, played by Andy

Yar; Male Ulfen Human Animal Speaker Bard 13. has a pet angel, that takes the form of a winged monkey or a parrot, uses wands to interrupt enemy spells. played by seth

Rina Shadowsong; Female Loli Elf Witch 12 w/ butterfly familiar. has +10 initiative (+4 Dex +2 trait +4 familiar), uses debuffs, heals conditions, and cracks voodoo threats on both the enemy, and the crewmates that insult her. plans to set up an "i don't curse you fee" payed by each crew member that doesn't wish to be cursed. played by me. the fee only applies to such things as loans and insults. is one of the only 3 PCs with darkvision, and the only one with a 26 int. there are 3 others with a 24. butterfly is a custom familiar, chosen both for cuteness and to minmax initiative. Rina can't deal damage on her own. but by lowering enemy defenses, she can increase allied damage output. she got lashed for assisting the captain in an honor duel, despite neither understanding nor beleiving in the concept of honor. having grown up with a drow father figure in the mwangi expanse. crew lookout with crazy high perception.

As the AP is meant for 4 players I am basically limiting my campaign to 4 although some players come in and out. I am also not running this in Golarian as I am starting it as a run up to Razors Coast. And no Hero Points, don't believe in them (what is this, basic?) 25 pt buy, core races and classes.

Merceda, 1st level half elf Rogue (pirate). The rigger of the group.
Andromeda, 1st level elvn wizard. Cook's mate.
Toast (don't ask), 1st level dwarven fighter. Squab.
Lance Webster, 1st level human cleric. Squab.

We are starting day 8, the day of the storm.

we also play with 25 point buy

2 traits

all published pathfinder sources with the following material banned

Evil Alignments
Leadership
Item Crafting
Paladins
Summoners
Gunslingers
Inquisitors (i kind of wrecked a few of his boss fights with a minmaxed inquisitor using a 3.5 spiked chain, combat reflexes, and righteous might)
3rd party (except things like open minded which are case by case)
Monsters as PCs
Templates
Svirfneblin
Merfolk
Duegar
Most Homebrew (homebrew feats are kind of iffy unless you can show proof of precedent. though something like the agile weapon property could serve as precedent for an improved weapon finesse feat)
and he is planning to possibly ban Witches in the next campaign due to bad experiences with them.

The PCs that I'm currently running through the game are a human fighter (unarmed archetype), a tengu ninja, a ratfolk gunslinger (gulch gunner archetype), a halfling bard (celebrity archetype) and a tiefling witch (the down-powered teifling version from Council of Thieves to keep her in line with the rest of the group).

Right now, my 6 players team is cmposed of:

- Baniwa M'Bwani, a level 3 Ranger(freebooter),a former mwangi slave and expert at life at sea,the pilot of the man's promise since the mutiny.

-Toshiro Sato, a level 3 Samurai( order of the ronin/sword saint), a short young man from Minkai whose clan has been digraced and exterminated by the Jade regent, an honorable and impressive man lost in a foreign country, the captain.

-Lemming Renning, a level 3 Halfling rogue, who used to serve as the cook's apprentice but now's the quartermaster! He's short, even by halfling standards and mean.

- Zuri, a level 3 oracle(juju),a crazy mwangi witch-doctor haunted by stange voices!The medic.

-Draco, a level 3 gunslinger(pistolero),born in Ustalav, he was rejected by his conservative and superstitious family for having a birthmark related to Groetus. Learnt the use of firearms in Alkenstar, the lookout.

-Althea Marensca, a level 3 bard(seasinger),a Varisian pirate wannabe whose mother told on her deathbed that her father was a famous pirate in the Shackles, now she's trying to fill in his shoes.

I am running the game for six players, all part of my regular home game.

Current Party:

Human Ape Shaman Druid w/ Ape Animal Companion (A pirate monkey)
Human Blackpowder Inquisitor of Besmara
Human Bladebound Magus w/ cutlass black blade
Tiefling Freebooter Ranger
Vanaran Drunken Master Monk w/ Peg Leg

Just had our first session...

Krezton Human Sorcorer
Krass Elf Wizard
kSalty Human Gunslinger
El Kanejo Agile Human rouge
Kryptonite Gnome Bard
Krain Dwarf Fighter

but it did not really matter, anyone can SWAB THE DECK!

The party right now at 3rd level:
Tengu Alchemist
Gnome Rouge (Pirate)
Dwarf Fighter (Corsair)
Human Bard
Dwarf Druid (Sea)

Healing light and no one wants to be a band-aid kit. Should be fun. Isn't Golorian supposed to be a human-centric world though? Not with the point-buy system, it turns out.

Scarab Sages

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

We went for an all goblin party. Haven't officially started Skulls and Shackles yet, we started with We be Goblins.

Monkey Goblin Cleric of Besmara
Monkey Goblin Archer Ranger
Goblin Rogue
Goblin Gunslinger (Musket Master)

Liberty's Edge

The (huge) crew of The Vengeance consists of:

Cpt. Merrick d'Targas, a Human Bard(Buccaneer)5(CG, sowly sipping to CN)), the party face (I took it upon myself to see how high I could get his diplomacy score, I stopped at +18, I could squeeze another point out but the DM threatened to throttle me) Heavily inspired by Cyrano D'Bergerac he leads the party into combat with a litany of cursing and insults for his opponets and rousing praise for his men. His major quirk is that he doesn't consciously cast spells, mixing them into his performances.

The Boatswain: A fiercely racist (CN) Half Elven Linorm Booded Sorcerer 5 named Dreki, who has an intimidate score to match Merrick's Diplomacy and looks that literally can kill (Burning gaze is his personal favorite spell)

Rigging Mates: Amaya (CG half elf)and Ayumi(CGKitsune) pair of Ninja 5 'sisters' who found there way to the Shackles after they escaped from there ninja clan...

Helmsman: Gen Blackreef(CN), Inquisitor(5) of Besmara, and another half elf, Master Blackreef acquired his moniker after grounding The Vengeance on a reef. He has recently acquired a taste for blackpowder weapons.

Master Gunner: Gar Bildgewater(CN), Goblin Fighter 5, This Goblin Gunslinger uses the big guns with the best of them, currently carrying 3 pistols and a blunderbuss he's trouble waiting for a place to happen.

Ships Surgeon: Lhana, a halfing cleric of Sarenrea (NG) She is trying to keep the party from sailing straight into CE territory and mostly suceeds.

The Cook: Zstelian, Human Fighter 5 CG. Easily the fiercest hand to had fighter of the group Big Z got stuck with the cooks job after Fishguts... lost his job... in the first volume of the ap, may PC into duelist when he's at the right level.

Liberty's Edge

Bjorkus - Minotaur Savage Barbarian/Bard
Chubwart - Goblin Trapper/Knifemaster
Kal Aldhemark - Aquatic Druid
Luthor Stone - Human Freebooter
Opal Windsong - Sylph Primal Air Sorceress

This is for a PBP but we're making good time. We're starting book three and we've only been playing for two months. 20 point buy. No hero points.

I keep reading all these groups with gunslingers in an AP the only person with firearms is the Pirate King. Well to each his own, but this is the wrong AP for that IMHO. Now Razor Coast is going to be a better one for firearms but still no gunslingers. I swear we have a whole group of new players who think it is 1885 and they are Billy the Kid. Wrong genre!

Anyway our group tonight:

Merceda: half-elf Rogue level 2 pirate archetype, rigger

Andromeda: elf wizard level 2, cook's mate

Prince Poppycock: Halfling bard level 1, swab

Toast: dwarf fighter level 1, swab

Dominic: half-elf ranger level 1, swab

Firearms are a standard feature of traditional pirate tales, and every module in the AP has a sidebar on how to introduce gunpowder into the campaign if the players and GM wish to do so. That hardly qualifies Skull & Shackles as the "wrong AP" for using firearms. Gunslingers (and particularly the Buccaneer archetype) fit the spirit of the campaign very well, and there's no reason you can't have them in play but still limit the overall access to weapons to the public at large (which is how I'm doing it in my game.)

Spoiler:
It's still easy to say that the Pirate King's weapon is a specific high-powered magical firearm (which it is) and that the Filthy Lucre is the only pirate ship armed exclusively with cannon (which are bloody expensive.) That still leaves him as the BBEG to overcome, even if the players have some limited access to firearms.

As you say, "to each his own", and if you or your group choose to run the AP strictly as written then more power to you. However, of all the Pathfinder APs I've played in, run or read through I think this is the one most appropriate for firearms... and Gunslingers to use them.
Obviously, YMMV.

Isn't a Buccanneer a Bard archetype?
Fitzwalrus, I realize that RAW, you can have a gunslinger with early weapons but I rarely read any that don't have modern weapons. Sorry, I just have a problem with my players running around with 1873 Colt Single Actions on a pirate ship. Just doesn't fit for me. Personally, I prefer the manner that Nick Logue handled firearms rather than in Ultimate Combat.

looking at the rather low AC (tropical conditions) of most opposition in this AP, I don't really see much of a benefit by taking gunslinging. Nevermind the usually crowded conditions. And pirates are trying to capture vessels intact, not sinking.

And historically, most piracy (except the Hollywood type) happened without Canons and Handguns, so..... well, it seemed to have worked through intimidation, archery/crossbows. Nevermind, water spoiling powder etc. it being expensive and possibly needing an Alchemist to procure.

There's a "Buccaneer" archetype for both Bard and Gunslinger, apparently. I was referring to the GS one, which according to the SRD is in the Advanced Race Guide. (Don't have that particular book myself, so i have to rely on the online information.)

I completely agree that (if allowed at all) guns should be limited to Early Firearms in S&S, if not in Golarion as a whole. I would only allow "modern" weapons as one-off treasure items, and d*mn tough ones to acquire at that. Where are you reading these accounts of games with modern weapons? Genuinely curious, as I read a lot of online campaign threads here on Paizo (S&S in particular) and I can't recall ever seeing anyone using advanced cartridge firearms.

I don't doubt that Hollywood has given us an exaggerated view of the age of piracy, but there are sufficient surviving period accounts to balance things out. Perhaps pistols may not have been quite as common as Pirates of the Caribbean would have us believe, but cannon were the standard ship-to-ship weapon of the day and pistols were common enough that a number of the surviving instances of "Pirates' Codes" include mention of them (usually in reference to below-decks safety or requiring their owners to keep them in good repair.)

We are talking about a fantasy roleplaying game here, so if we can handle flying sailing ships and awakened talking animals I think we can deal with a little bit of poetic license when it comes to "real" piracy. ;D

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Which of these is more out of place?

A modern japanese schoolgirl clad in a black pair of pajamas with a tokugawa era daisho consisting of a pair of wakazashi who hunts massive flying fire breathing reptiles?

an old man who wears a dress, and demasulates reality by solving mathmetical equations aloud, and murders legions with his mathematical prowess a handful of times per day?

a medieval knight clad in rennaiscance era armor. who wields a roman era falcata in both hands, worships greek gods, who hunts brain eating space aliens with his weapon he bought at a yard sale?

a native american shaman who wears the hides of the beasts of the sahara, transforms into freaking dinosaurs, hugs trees, and engages in bestiality while hunting tentacle monsters and zombies?

a sickly little noble girl who refuses to drink her milk, only wears the most exquisite of victorian fashions, inspires people to work harder with puppet shows through the hand made plush dolls she carries?

these are all concepts available with the core rulebok

Spoiler:

1. Rogue/Ninja/Ranger/Fighter

2. Wizard

3. Fighter/Paladin/Cavalier/Samurai

4. Druid

5. Bard

if you can do a mixed party of these with the core rulebook

than i have no problem with advanced Firearms, nor the Gunslinger class

I don't mix European and Oriental classes either, just me. They advised against it when they released the original Oriental Adventures and I have stuck to it since.
