What's a skill point worth in gp?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

A curious questions which has come up in a number of contexts.

One, for PFS, is day jobs.

Another is items which boost skills, like cracked ioun stones (though they're not PFS.)

Just wondering what people thought. And also, it suggests another thing, perhaps an optional rule: training. Can we (someday) spend our hard earned gold in pathfinder to train skills? Probably not beyond the level maximum, but still. Or double cost beyond level maximum?

I'm thinking like 200-300gp per skill point, what do you think? And although I didn't give reasons, I'd be curious to hear justifications as well.

Closest thing I can offer are the magic item crafting rules:
Bonus squared X 100gp (probably x2 since "training" would be slotless and another x2 since it stacks with other sources and can't be taken away.)

I would be against it though, since it's probably going to imbalance the game. If you want to spend gold for skills, just get a skill-competence-item or a +int item.

Buy/craft an appropriate Headband on Int.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Skill ranks aren't equal, so pricing them isn't easy. A rank in Perception is far more valuable then a rank in Craft(Underwater Basketweaving).

There's a difference between being able to bump up skills to your level limit (or level+3) and pushing them over that. The first can be approximated by Int boosters and won't break anything. The second is much more iffy.

Arguably, you could treat it as a competence bonus. After all, what else is competence?
