Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Advanced Race Guide
To create an dhampir, fetchling, goblin, ifrit, kitsune, nagaji, oread, sylph, undine, or wayang character, you must have a Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation.
I'm not sure exactly what this means.
Does this mean some scenarios give you permission to use these races later for another character? That you can remake your character as one of these races? I have to buy something? Something else?I was considering a dhampir oracle of bones, then I saw this and am not sure if I can or not or if I will be able to later
Mike Mistele |
The primary method for acquiring a "race boon" Chronicle sheet is at a convention. The PFS staff sends "convention support" to event organizers, and one of the aspects of this support can be various "boon" Chronicles; one such type of boon is the ability to play a character of a race which is not available to be played without that boon.
Just so you know, simply attending a convention does not assure you that you'll get a boon Chronicle, or that you'll receive a particular sort of boon. Larger conventions tend to get more boons (as well as the "better" boons, such as the race boons), but they're typically given out by random drawing (I've seen organizers have each player at a table roll a d20, and the high roll gets a boon), or by playing multiple PFS sessions (some conventions will give you a token for each PFS session you play, and you can trade in tokens for a randomly-rolled boon -- at the conventions I've been to which have done this, two tokens give you one shot at a boon). In addition, I often see PFS event organizers use the boons as a way to thank the people who GM at their events.

Oh yeah I agree.
Just the mechanic that only lets a very small number of people in the country (or do people outside the US have a chance) play a few more races just seems wierd to me.
The dhampir oracle of bones really sounded kool. I won't have any problem coming up with a differnt back-up character.
Purple Fluffy CatBunnyGnome |
Generally all the boons are available at larger cons like Gencon, and I think PaizoconUK.
However, VOs in areas can get boons for smaller conventions, the requirements are that the convention needs to have at least 15 tables and they need to ask for the prize support.
Boons are meant to be limited and to be a draw. They are not "an everyone gets a trophy for showing up" kind of thing.
They are also limited in circulation, Dhamphir is no longer in circulation unless there are people that already have one and are willing to give it up.
As others have said, there are a wealth of opportunities with the original core races, as well as, tengu, aasimar, tiefling. There are tons of opportunities that are there for the grabbing... certainly more worthwhile than bringing another old argument, no?
Morrolan de'Morcaine |
Sorry, didn't think I had and wasn't trying to start an argument. And I didn't know it had already been covered. My search-fu is not strong.
Just didn't understand what the text was actually saying. Then I said that the rule seemed wierd to me. Never said it was unfair or should be changed. I even said I would try to go to the next Con near me and play some PFS.
I also said I would have no problem making another concept. I agree there are scadzillions of possiblities.
Just reading the book and thought dhampir and oracle of bones went together smashingly.
I am no considering a new backup character. Maybe something like a tiefling that summons demons or devils. Not sure.

I've sent out racial boons over the past year to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Great Britain, Finland, Ireland, South Africa, Croatia, Slovenia, France, and Turkey and Iceland (I think - don't have my book in front of me). I've also sent racial boons to more than 100 conventions in North America. There are plenty of opportunities to try to obtain a racial boon.

Hello fellow pathfinders,
So don't want to rehash what seems like an old discussion, but needed clarity. when the comment had said, "Core Races, were allowed with Tengu, Assimar, and Tieflings - plus the variety of Classes for the assorted books - archetypes - and alternative racial abilities - there are oodles of character concepts that can be played". Means this statement was made before tiefling, assimar and tengu have since been retired, out of pathfinder society correct? Playing any race, but the core races in society unless recieveing a boon for the new races in pathfinder society are off limits?

The core races, tengu, wayang, kitsune, and nagaji are still in. (Which is either +2 races or -8 races if you really liked the bloodlines)

You're allowed to play core races plus tengu, kitsune, nagaji, and wayang right now. It's in the guide and on the additional resources page.

Core races, Tengu, Nagaji, Wayang, and Kitsune are legal to play without boons provided you possess a currently legal source that contains them (save for the Core as they are always available). This means that if you want to play the four other races, having the Advanced Race Guide or similar material is necessary.

And race boon aren't always hard to get. Everyone who's scheduled to run a PFS game at Dubuque Con this weekend was given a boon that allows making an aasimar character. Got my boon chronicle today, but my game is scheduled for tomorrow. This is a race I really wanted to have the boon for. I love that race. Think I'm gonna apply the boon to my ectoplasmist spiritualist. Or maybe my battle host occultist? Decisions decisions. Can't use it on the kineticist I was originally planning to rebuild into one. It has to be your first chronicle applied, and would be the 4th one. oh well, kitsune make interesting Overwhelming Soul kineticists.

Except the boon specifically states it must be the first chronicle on your stack? And my stack already has chronicles 1, 2, and 3 (Between the Lines, Beneath Ice, and Wounded Wisp)? The GM today for Wounded Wisp filled in chronicle number, player name, character name, and character ID number in pen when he handed them out.
Daniel Myhre |
Eh, I kind of like the kitsune build I did. And the reaction of one lodge member when I dropped my Change Shape late in the session for the first time was great. The boon seems like it'd help my spiritualist more anyway. That's who I'd initially planned on using it on.
Oh sure I tinkered with a few aasimar rebuilds. But I hadn't been set on it. With the boon my ectoplasmist spiritualist can have 16 Str, 16 Dex, and 16 wis without having to take too steep a hit on Int and Con. Which is good since this is a "Get up in their face" build. Granted, 12 con for a melee build seems... ow. I'm planning on snagging Toughness at level 3 to make up for the lowish con, and Dodge at level 5 to help avoid being hit. With a shield I currently have a standing AC of 19 on the build.

I love that I came here wondering if I was reading the PFS guide properly, and that kitsune were allowed for fresh creation- and not only is the answer "yup", but it's a first page thread.
Magical Tail is still cool but bad right? :P
Edit: Actually, is stuff like Dirty Tactics Toolbox legal in society play? I don't recall that whole line of stuff ("Pathfinder Player Companion" line), but obviously I don't keep up.

dirty tactics hasn't been approved yet, but 5 ...4...3....2....(fingers crossed)

Nice. Well, buying it whether or not. I found the list of legal stuff and it mostly includes those things- but more importantly, I'll find interesting stuff in there even if I never have time for PFS stuff.
I will also note that I *just* found out that the nerfed summoner ("Unchained") is allowed, and the regular one is no longer eligible for creation... but that my existing summoner is grandfathered in. That's sort of exciting- rare! Exclusive! Act now!
Daniel Myhre |
Magical Tail is highly situational. The additional spell-like abilities are useful. But their usefulness drops considerably if Charisma isn't your main stat. Then again that's true of any SLA that's got a charisma based DC. And they are definitely appropriate from an RP standpoint. But if you took an alternate racial trait that trades away the Kitsune Magic trait, all the feats do is grow you another tail. Which isn't really worth it unless you have nothing else that would help your character feat wise.
cfalcon |
I think it's probably worse than situational, I think it's probably bad. Too many of the tail powers are filler for the stars to really make up for it. Super cool though.
Not that I suspect most kitsune would trade away their magic, the magical tail feat doesn't require you have kitsune magic or anything. You always get the tail and the power.

Depends on the character. For a warrior type it may be a worth while trade. Or if you don't actually use any magic normally. With Kahel I traded Kitsune Magic for Fast Shifter since a +1 DC to enchantment spells doesn't really help a kineticist. But being able to shift forms as a move action could. At which point I realized this also means I don't get the spell-like ability Dancing Lights due to it being a part of kitsune magic. Then I found taht without the Kitsune Magic trait, you can't get the SLA from Magical Tails either.
That said, I don't see many 'filler' abilities for the SLA Magical Tails gives. Might not be worth the trade of a feat to get them with most builds. But if you have spare feats, I could see them being useful. Especially in scenarios where there's only 4 or 5 combat/social encounters.
Grrr De'Bonaire |
As a fox form fighter being able to pop out as a move action and then do something with the standard is way more useful than a cantrip I can almost equate with a 250gp wayfinder purchase and a DC to something I'll never use.
In fact, I hold hold a different wand or item in each hand, and two wands on spring loaded wrist sheaths before changing into my real form. So if the incompetent bipeds I'm traveling with can't handle something I can pop into my silly two legged form with four options: no waiting.
cfalcon |
> I don't see many 'filler' abilities for the SLA Magical Tails gives
In a normal campaign, I think the filler stuff is lessened but still there. In society play, there's more. Misdirection is a hard sell. Suggestion needs targets that can feasibly take and act on suggestions- a heavier role play than combat environment. Even the normally solid charm person can have a hard time shining for a whole feat.
> As a fox form fighter
I mean, at that point you have a feat and some other stuff invested in that. Would most kitsume be grabbing that? Clearly faster shifting would help a build built around shifting.
BigNorseWolf |

Either a fox form fighter or a master of disguise build who can run around the corner and POOF into one additional persona would find it handy. Thats what I like about the alternate racial traits, finding something that works for YOUR character.
Daniel Myhre |
Once I get the book with it, Fox Form sounds amusing with my kineticist. Think about it, cute and cuddly fox... who launches highly dangerous blasts of air, water, and lightning.
Magical Tails, Fox Form, and similar stuff are all kind of situational. Some builds will make use of them, most wont. Same with the alternate racial traits Some will find trading away their SLA a good deal. Others might think trading Agile for bonuses with diplomacy to be a good deal. Most will just go "Eh, who cares". And others will find the +1 DC to enchantments very appealing.
I don't see people with Fast Shifter instead of Kitsune Magic going for the magical tails feat though.

Yup. I had a party in a PbP game that I almost TPKed (4 out due to color spray, 1 out due to burning hands (a booned aasimar no less at 1 HP away from death - A reroll on a heal stabilization check was the only thing that saved him)). The brawler, who was the only one up, did enough damage to take out the BBEG, which was the final blow she needed.
The party was more appreciative of the game than I'm used to. Maybe I should do those situations more often. :D
