Wizards of the Coast is not only republishing old material, and is not only publishing new material for a version of the game that is ostensibly out of print, but is actively giving encouragement and assistance to DM's who want to start up a campaign using those out of print rules!
The implications of that simple fact are enormous. I think it signals a shift in their corporate attitude away from "the latest version of the rules is the only one we'll even acknowledge". It also demonstrates their lack of confidence in the ability of 4th Edition to carry the flag until 5th Edition is ready for the public (which is now scheduled for 2014). That means they have all of 2013 to play around with previous editions, and more than that, continue reaching out to the fan bases of those previous editions.
I agree and think this is a smart move on their part as the 4th edition fizzles away.

I wouldn't be too exited about the implications of new content, yet. Sure, it is great that they are re-publishing the A and S series, but I think the inclusion of a new inroductionary adventure to expand A to a full campaign is probably not an indication that they will start a whole new bunch of support products for the AD&D reprint.

I dont think that the A Series will go over well with anyone who isnt a 1st ED fan.
If I'm remembering correctly (and I might not be because it's been years since I've run or played any of the A series modules) doent it require the PC's to be captured, have thier equipment striped from them and have them escape from the dungeons of the Slave Lords between A3 and A4?
The newer generation is pretty...WHINY and tend to take any thing that might harm or serve as a drawback as unfair and broken.
I dont mind obviously as a campaign involving SLAVE LORDS might result in your PC's getting captured at some point and oh..I dont know possibly becoming slaves. If not for a little while at least. What I'm saying is that I dont think the newer generation is as flexible when it comes to the story going against them as the older generation is.

I agree that the thread name is a bit misleading. A single extra introductory module is not a big deal, considering that AD&D modules are something like 16-32 pages long.

And yet, if I may, I would like to present this acclaimed series as my simple rebuttal.

The 'new' in the thread title was pertaining to all the AD&D products coming out, some reprints to be sure, some altogether new as per the announcement.

I would hazard a guess that the future of new AD&D materials depends on how well the existing ones sell.

I'm guessing they're waiting until Next gets finalized before they release a new version of GDQ1-7. They did a sequel of T1-4 at the 3E launch so I doubt we'll see that initially with 5E's launch. Still, maybe they'll do a high end reprint with original 1E rules like the A and S ones, after they see how well they sell of course.

Nevertheless, the title made me think of "Lord of the Rings: Super Deluxe Ultra Edition with ALL NEW FOOTAGE", where the new footage is an alternate take of that one scene where we saw Frodo's feet.
