Adjacent reach?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

I've been looking for a Pathfinder equivalent of a feat from 3.5 called short haft that would allow me to attack adjacent squares with a reach weapon. Someone at a game last night said there is one, but I haven't been able to find it. Any ideas?

The Polearm Master archetype for Fighter gets an ability that allows them to attack adjacent foes with a -4 at 2nd level, but I don't know of a feat that lets you do it.

And this thread should be in general advice, not the Pathfinder Society section.

Shadow Lodge

Sorry, I was asking for a Pathfinder society character and didn't want a lot of answers about 3.5 compatibility :)

Sczarni

Unless he is of course asking for a PFS specific solution, in which case this is the perfect forum for this.

Far as I am aware Polearm Master is the only way to get a shortened grip on a reach weapon.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

There are few weapons which allow you to change reach all the time from 5 to 10 feet, so feat tax can be avoided there. They are however exotic I believe.

Sczarni

Dwarven Dorn Dergar, meteor Hammer, depending on how your GM interprets it a Kusarigama. I think thats it.

Andoran

Depending on what you are playing, there are other options for quick change. The Dwarven Boulder Helmet for Dwarven longhammers/axes works well.

Not exactly what you want but enables adjacent reach: just use armor spikes! You may also attack while grappled without dropping your reach (two-handed) weapon.

And then if you want to hit both 5' and 10' enemies in the same round you take two-weapon fignting !!!

Andoran

There is a feat chain that allows attacking with a reach weapon into both adjacent and non-adjacent squares.

EWP: Whip (can attack anywhere in its 15' reach, including adjacent)
Weapon Focus: Whip
Whip Mastery (no longer provokes, can do lethal or non-lethal damage, ni longer blocked by armor/natural armor)
Improved Whip Mastery (Allows AoO within natural reach plus 5', usually 10' area)

or just have a bite attack :)

Any use of armor spikes and a two-handed weapon is open to major table variance. There are many judges who will not allow the use of armor spikes, in any way, shape or form, and still allow the two-handed weapon to be used and/or threaten.

Moved to Rules forum as this is not a specific PFS question.

Don't forget the other half of the sentence you quoted:

"...and still allow the two-handed weapon to be used and/or threaten."

Many GMs believe that you must have a free hand in order to use armor spikes. Thus, at any given moment you either have both hands on your polearm but don't threaten with your armor spikes, or you're merely carrying your polearm with one hand and threaten with your spikes but not with your polearm. GMs who treat it this way also (in my experience) tend to view any efficient means of switching back and forth as being "cheese".

Other GMs are fine with armor spikes being on your legs, so you can threaten with your polearm at the same time that you threaten with your leg-spikes.

Thus, table variation. (As for which I think is correct... no comment.)

If you can get the boon, Kitsune have a bite attack by default.

Then again, due to the class, archetype & equipment my Kitsune is setup with, I tend to treat his bite attack as not accessible in the normal course of events.

Sorcerer, Razmiran Priest, full face mask (holy symbol, gold, used for False Focus), said mask also making his race a bit hard to tell, since he also wears a hooded robe. And may be shifted into human form, where the bite is gone, as well, at any time.

If someone is giving you the bone on Armor Spikes, there are other weapons.

Dwarven Boulder Helmet, Barbazu Beard, Boot Blade, Ratfolk Tailblade, Unarmed Strike, and Kobold Tail Attachments.

I seriously do not understand the Armor Spikes hate. It really irks me.
