One correction. The cleric was a cleric of Pharasma and so could have been Neutral. Could not have been evil under the circumstances.

Point taken, but neutral vs. good wouldn't change my analysis much.

If the cleric was part of my party and someone killed him as he was about to get up, would I call him evil? Not for that. The guy who killed him may be evil for other reasons (hell, that might be why we were fighting) but in all fairness we were trying to kill him (the killer).

As far as the DM doing that, I'd probably disapprove just because though it's the smart move, it's not the fun move (especially for the dead player) if you know what I mean. So I'd object more on gameplay lines than moral ones =p

When you say "If you are willing to kill someone in order to avoid any risk at all to yourself and your comrades, then you've strayed across the line." I see your point, but also disagree that it applies to what we're talking about. If the guy had broke into the cleric's house and slit his throat while he slept because he felt he might later be a threat, what you're saying would apply. But that's not what happened. They were already fighting (which usually means to the death in Pathfinder) and he put someone down who was about to get back up to fight.
