New players needed for dark fantasy game

Recruitment

Dark Archive

Hi guys. I need 2-3 players for my Midnight game. The game is very long - over 6000 posts - and the characters are 5th level currently.

I must mention that the game tends to be very deadly and PC deaths are much more frequent that usual.

For those who are not familiar with the setting:

Midnight:
heroes struggle against overwhelming odds. A century ago,
the free peoples of Eredane fought the final battles in a des-perate war of survival against the Shadow, the dark god
Izrador…and lost. The lands of men were crushed by Izrador’s
armies, or succumbed to his insidious corruption. The shat-tered remnants of the once-great elves and dwarves retreated
to the hearts of their homelands to vainly resist their inevita-ble defeats. Many of the gentler races were simply enslaved
or reduced to hopeless refugees.
One hundred years have passed since the Shadow fell.
The elder races—particularly those of fey ancestry who have
battled Izrador for millenia—are being systematically hunted
down and exterminated. Their great forest kingdom has
become an island of light in a darkening world, its elven keep-ers fighting losing battles against hordes of shadow orcs and
other servants of the dark god. The surviving dwarven clans
have locked themselves in their mountain holdfasts, and the
streets of their subterranean cities have become meat grinders
for the endless waves of foes sent to root them out.
The lands of men are ruled with an iron fist by the min-ions of the Shadow. Once great cities lie in ruins, and nearly
every isolated town and village now exists to serve the needs
of the Shadow first, and local populace a distant second.
Literacy, magic, and weapons are illegal, and even long-dis-tance travel draws suspicion. With each new human genera-tion grows general ignorance and complacency. Soon, none
alive will remember the days before the Shadow fell.

The Veil
Aeons ago the dark god, Izrador, was cast out of the
heavens and banished to the surface of the mortal world. The
forces behind this banishment intended to seal Izrador forever
within a material plane where his power would be weak. But
the barrier, known only as the Veil, that prevents Izrador from
returning to the heavens to spread his corruption also prevents
all other gods from answering the prayers of mortals.
The impenetrable Veil between the mortal and celestial
realms has other far-reaching effects, for now the spirits of the
dead have no final resting place. Many who die are now
doomed to remain bound to their bodies, rising from death in
a hideous mockery of their former selves, tainted by madness
and an insatiable hunger for the flesh of the living. Most refer
to these walking undead simply as the Fell. Other beings,
perhaps those of stronger will, escape that horrific fate upon
their mortal deaths only to realize an alternate eternity of
roaming the world as bodiless spirits, beings known as the
Lost

Midnight has its own specific world rules. The magic works differently and it is much rarer than usual. The world is grim and deadly. In addition to that, I have modified standard classes and races. You can find modified rules here: Nightflier's Midnight Rules.

Right now I am looking for Channeler and martial Channeler types. The game is 30 point buy, 5th level, max HP. The game will use my Rules document, in addition to standard Pathfinder stuff and Midnight specific stuff, which you can find at Darkness Falls.

I can post at least 1/day but at +8GMT. Interested to join a Midnight based setting. When would you expect us to be ready?

Dark Archive

Whenever you can. This is a loooong game and has seen many characters come and go and return again. So, take your time. The only rule is that once you start posting, you keep 1 post/day rate, unless you need to take a break from the game.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds like a very interesting game...I have liked the Midnight setting since I first came across it and would love to play in such a world.
I will read your rules and see what I can come up with, if that is ok.

I believe I tried to get into one of your games before and failed. Here's for trying again. I'll need a bit to read over the house rules, but I'd like to play an oracle or cleric.

Dark Archive

Midnight is very specific setting. There are no gods but evil god Izrador and magic works very differently.

Edit:Nevermind, I'm going to withdraw from this. I'll leave it up to people more familiar with the setting and rules. I wasn't expecting it to be so different from normal Pathfinder. Sorry for the false expression of interest ~_~*

Yes.

when you say martial channeler do you mean a multiclass character? I didn't see any explicitly martial channeler in the books.

I have been interested in Midnight for some time, but haven't ever found a game.

Maybe like an Inquisitor or Paladin?

Yes. Both of character who left the game were fighter/channelers. One of them Charismatic, going for Syphon, the other Spiritual.

There are no Inquisitors or (Anti)Paladins in Midnight, except Dark God's.

Still interested after reading but have to wait till next week to work on a character. So until then I can't put anything up yet.

Dark Archive

Take your time. :) As you can see, there isn't that much interest in this game. Possibly because my games tend to be far more deadly than normal.

What am I chopped liver?

Charismatic is a... Jedi?

I'm sorry?

Sorry for what? Just teasing. Was thinking you'd say, no that's IF you're selected.

I played on a Midnight game once and really enjoyed the setting, in spite our adventure ending in a TPK lol. At the time I was an human defender and later an elf wildlander I think, but I am very rusty in my knowledge of that world and even rustier about the 3.5 rules. You are using the 3.5 rules set, right? Or is it converted to Pathfinder?

I checked the channeler class in the Darkness Fall website but have some questions about the class. Which stat does it use for spellcasting? Is it a spontaneous caster or does it memorise stuff with spellbooks or similar....? Which spell list does it uses? Wizard? Cleric? Which table does it uses for spell progression?

Srry if that stuff is already on the site but I could not find it.

Dark Archive

I am using the Pathfinder rules, combined with my own Houserules. You can see them by clicking on my profile and following the link.

Does the Mighty trait allow the use of a one-handed weapon, as a light weapon in your off-hand?

Sczarni

Might be interersted. I've got a cleric I just retired from another game that would work well. She's in my porfile. Her name is Taldra Torviir. I would have to come with a new backstory for this campaign.

Greetings. Good to see someone keeping up interest in the Midnight setting. I'm actually running a Midnight game in my real life group, also converted to pathfinder, though differently I'm sure, as I did the conversions myself. For whatever reason, I can't see your houserules to compare; I just get a dropbox error. I'm quite familiar with the setting, and I have all of the original books. I might be interested in adding in a character, and I think I'd be able to contribute well to the overall immersion in the game.

I usually play martial characters of one sort or another. I'd love to find the perfect magic/fighter combo, but it is very difficult to pull off, and usually ends up less effective that either. Would you be open to a martial character?

Edit: Got the document to work, I'll have a look over the new rules. I'm not seeing Heroic paths... are they used as they are, left out, or being updated piecemeal?

No. But there are other rules that allow something like that.

There are no clerics or other divine casters in Midnight, unless they belong to Dark God. So, I suggest for you to take a look at Midnight fluff and then rethink your concept. :)

About Heroic Paths - you can either choose a Heroic Path from published Midnight sources, or I can create a Heroic Path tailored to your character. About half of the players have unique Paths. I am glad that you are familiar with the setting. Current year is LA 98 and the great offensive of Izrador's forces haven't started yet, so there is still hope for the world. :)

Now, the party is rather large. It has 7 players right now. The game is designed for 9 PCs - it is traditional number for going against dark gods, after all. The party currently has 2 channelers and I would prefer to have at least one more in the party. But, if you would rather create full martial character, I would be glad to see it. :) Please post your concept here. You can check out the Game Thread and Discussion Thread to see other characters, although the game is now in happening in the fay realms.

I'm reading through you material and just wanting to clear up a few questions.

1. Are the shadowlands a geographical separation, or a parallel realm/dimension (as planeshifting is supposed to be impossible due to the veil.)?

2. You mentioned we are in the fey realms, again, a fey plane, or simply fey territory?

3. A few Midnight races are missing from your updates, namely Elfling and Dwarrow, as well as the Nomadic and Agrarian versions of the Halfling. Are they available if desired?

Dark Archive

1 & 2: Shadowlands occupy the same geographical space as continent of Eredane, but the are in fact completely separate realm. I've used the description of fay paths from Fury of Shadow, that imply the existence of completely different realm of faeries and other fay creatures, and expanded on them.

3: They are available, but I haven't updated the because of the lack of interest from players. If you want to play any of the missing races, I'll update them.

Alright, I've been looking through the options and I think I have figured out what I would like to play, at least in general. I will need to feel things out with you Nightflier as we go, as some of what I am looking at has not been converted yet. I will answer the call to play a channeler of sorts. I am thinking I will play a Halfling or Elfling spiritual channeler, heading for the Druid PrC. I don't think there is anyone like that in your group at present, so I figure it should not step on any toes.

Here are the items that I would need you to consider before knowing if what I have in mind is feasible.

1. I would think, as both Danisil and Halflings can receive a +2 Racial bonus to Wis, that Elflings would also get a +2 to Wisdom once Pathfinderized. Correct?

2. I am thinking to make him a Wogren Packleader by way of his theme, and using the Warg Heroic path to both gain a lot of traditional Druidic abilities, and in order to gain a second animal companion. While the channeler Nature's Bond includes the option to have a second companion at a lower level, I am thinking that in this case, both companions would be full strength as they come from unrelated sources, and each grant a full strength animal companion on their own.

3. Does the Weapon Bond ability allow you to add your chosen ability score bonus to damage? Or would it need to be a composite bow, as with strength?

4. Is there any way to negate Spell Failure with armour, besides the PrC's that grant such an ability? I'm not seeing one, and as druids don't usually have to contend with Spell Failure, I'm at a loss on how to mitigate the issue here.

Feedback is appreciated! :)

Dark Archive

1. No, Elflings would still have their usual modifiers (+4 Dex; -2 Str, -2 Con).

2. Because this game has more than usual number of players, I've decided to rule that one PC can have only one familiar/animal companion/cohort at the same time. You may have more than one, but only one of them can take actions during any given encounter. That way no one can monopolize the time and all characters have equal attention. Sorry.

3. Weapon Bond allows you to replace Strength with some other ability score when you are using one type of weapon, such as bastard sword or crossbow - but it doesn't change the weapon properties. So, if you would want to use bow and calculate your damage bonus using Wis instead of Str, for instance, you would have to have composite bow or some other bow that allows something like that.

4. No, but there are ways for you to raise your AC by using Channeler Talents and feats.

Most players who plan to take PrCs for their characters have asked for me to create new Prestige Classes for their characters. If you decide to go with Channeler/Druid, I am ready to do so for you as well. The Druid from the Midnight setting will be changed for sure, because it needs to be upgraded to new rules anyway.

I suggest that we move this discussion to the Discussion Thread.

Too bad. I can completely understand, but it does somewhat kill the concept. Back to the drawing board. As suggested, I'll bring future ideas to the discussion forum.
