New Paladin Oath: Defense

Suggestions/House Rules/Homebrew

I made this for a player who wants at all costs a protection aura similar to that of the 2E paladin. Critique please (I want to know if it's balanced for you, before trying it in a game).

Oath of Defense
Some paladins swear to protect all their comrades and allies from harm. To them, altruism and abnegation mean constantly putting their own health and welfare after the safety of others.
Aura of Protection (Sp): At 3rd level, all allies within 10 feet from you gain a +1 deflection bonus to AC and a +1 resistance bonus on saves vs. attacks and spells from evil creatures, as in a lesser version of protection from evil. At 8th level, these bonuses increase to +2. At 17th level, the bonuses increase to +4 and you are constantly surrounded by a magic circle against evil.
This ability replaces aura of courage, aura of resolve and aura of righteousness.
Aura of Hallowing (Sp): At 11th level, as a free action, you may spend two of your daily uses of smite evil to create a hallow effect centered on yourself. The effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to your paladin level. This ability replaces aura of justice.
Oath Spells: sanctuary (1st), litany of warding (2nd), magic circle against evil (3rd), hallow (4th).
Deities: Abadar, Iomedae, Shelyn, Torag

Shadow Lodge

I'm not an expert, but it certainly doesn't look overpowered.

I'd be a bit worried that the Aura of Protection would overlap too much with Rings of Protection and Cloaks of Resistance worn by the other PCs and would turn out to be less useful than it looks. In a recent campaign I played, most of the party had at least +2 deflection and resistance bonuses by level 10, so between levels 10-17 the aura would have been mostly irrelevant. It'd be quite nice in low wealth games and at low levels before these items are affordable, and at level 17 adding the anti-mind control effect would be very nice, but at mid levels it might be underwhelming. Not sure giving up three out-right immunities to fear, charm, and compulsion (plus permanent DR 5/evil) is worth it.

I like it Bardess! An Aegis Paladin! Here is a link to my Antipaladin "Obsessions" (Oaths of EVIL!!!).

Um- maybe I could replace mercies instead of auras, but the Empyreal Knight archetype has just a temporary aura of protection instead of the 18th level mercy... It could be too much. My player wants it permanent...

Here's the final version (thanks again to Elghinn Lightbringer for his help):

Oath of Defense
Some paladins swear to protect all their comrades and allies from harm. To them, altruism and abnegation mean constantly putting their own health and welfare after the safety of others.
Aura of Protection (Sp): At 3rd level, a paladin radiates an aura that protects his allies. Each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC and a +1 resistance bonus on saves against attacks and effects created by an evil creature, as protection from evil. At 6th level, and every six levels thereafter 6th, these bonuses increase by +1 to a maximum of +4 at 18th level. The bonus to saving throws stacks with the paladin’s other aura effects. This ability replaces mercy.
Aura of Hallowing (Sp): At 11th level, a paladin can expend two uses of her smite evil ability to create a hallow effect. The paladin and each ally within 10 feet of her gains the benefits of a magical circle against evil and a +4 sacred bonus to resist the effects of negative energy. Any creature susceptible to positive energy, such as undead creatures, receive a –4 penalty to resist the effects of positive energy when within this area. Spell Resistance does not apply to this effect. In addition, any dead body within this aura cannot be turned into an undead creature. This hallowing effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to the paladin’s level. This ability replaces aura of justice.
Code of Conduct: Always think to your allies’ safety before your own. Never leave an ally in danger.
Oath Spells: sanctuary (1st), status (2nd), protection from energy (3rd), hallow (4th).
Deities: Abadar, Iomedae, Shelyn, Torag
