I went to a Convention this past weekend, and had my heart broken by losing two "everyone roll a d20 to see who gets the boon" times with an 18 and 19 for my rolls. So... if anyone has the boon that lets you learn the Shoanti language for free, I want that! I have no boons to trade... but I guess I can trade physical Pathfinder books and material for it. Nothing huge like a Core Rulebook... but either a Tales (which give boons that can be used by all your characters) or a Chronicles supplement.

I am now looking for a extra trait boon, Oread, Dhampir, Wayang, and of course the impossible to get Goblin. Also a Kitsune as we have 2 in play already and my Son was the only one who did not get one. He now wants to try playing one. Uggh, I could have given him mine if I knew. Have some boons to trade, that are not used yet. Also not sure if its frowned upon, but I just won a gift card to Target, and I never shop there. I got a Arby's gift card for Christmas, and the nearest one is about an hour and a half away from us. So neither is any help to me. If I am allowed to trade them, I would.

I have 2 Kitsune, and 2 Nagigi/Wayang/Kitsune Boons I will give to 4 people who PM me a 50 word well thoughtout reason as to why I should give it to them. :D
Anything less than 50 words will be discarded... the words "a, the, I, or" do not count towards your word count.
Repeating the work please 50 times won't work either

Those are probably the best boons. They don't say "assume a roll of 20;" they say "guaranteed success." Make up a skill check with a DC of 50 or 70. Automatic success. Running high jump to the top of the bailey wall. Acrobatic check to get behind the huge black dragon. UMD to activate the evil artifact. Knowledge (local) to know the nicknames the bad guy suffered through when he was a first-year at the Academe.
Automatic success.
It does have to be a skill you have no ranks in though... (not sure if you could use it for UMD then...). I put mine on a Cleric with an Int of 7 - LOTS of skills with no ranks.

I have a Aasimar Boon from DragonCon a couple years ago. Got it right after playing First Steps...too bad I can't do anything with it.
There is a boon you can get... xenophobia .... that basically for each racial boon you attach, you get pluses against that race... so it is minorly useful still

That is amazingly generous of you.

Looking to make a rather good deal in my opinion, I want to trade an actual copy of Elves of Golarion for someones awesome Gencon Grippli Boon, my son has a fascination with all things herpetology and it would really make his day. I know Gencon is still a ways off but I want to get a deal done prior. If you want a copy of this rare tome, and failed to get it during its short print run now is your chance.
So, in basic terms
Want
Upcoming Gencon Grippli Boon

Soooooo that's is going to be a hard one to give up .. as people will only ever receive one and it'll have a bunch of stuff on it.
I would suggest the possibility of coming up for Gencon and GMing for it?? Surely there is room on the plane from SA despite Dragnmoon's ego.
So you should totally come and join the rest of us greedy wh...er dedicated GMs ;)

Sadly Gencon plots against me. I am not permitted to take any days off in August due to the nature of my job, and it seems that the automobile industries habit of releasing new models or changed vehicle content every year will not be coming to an end in the near future. I will so be there when I retire though. Unless that is, I can get a job working for Mike, Cosmo, Sara, or Lisa that pays about the same as my current vocation.
As for Dragnmoon and his ego... I will loathe the day he gets that 5th star. I believe he has four bags of checked luggage for just the other stars already. ;)

Ahhh silly car places... sheeeeeesh ....
Well I wish you luck on your quest. As cool as it would be to give to a new young gamer, with a once a time boon (as far as I know) I'm being fairly stingy -- plus I have plans for a different race on the boon. However, If they are given out again, the 2nd one I get will be yours if your son still needs one.

I'll accept the challenge Chris, you are too generous though. I have at least three tables coming up at Chimaeracon, I had four but dropped one so a fellow GM could get free admission, all of a sudden it's something I regret doing:p. August will be here before I know it. My cousin is getting married the weekend of Reapercon, so I'm going to have to get creative. It looks like I may have to put on the organizer hat for some under represented conventions in the area. Thanks for the challenge Chris, let's see if I am up to it.

Which also took care of transportation, lodging and food during the trip?
A greyhound bus will get you most anywhere for $98 or less. Likewise, mos places in Europe can get to any other EU country for less than €100. Save less than $10 or €10 a month and you can go the next year. Also, someone from your area may also be attending the same con and may not mind you riding with them, in which case it s $0. And before it is said it never happens, I usually let 2-3 people each year pile in my truck in Alanta for a free round trip ride to and from Gen Con in Indianapolis.
Some larger conventions like Gen Con or Origins, you are offered a free hotel room when running a minimum set number of games. I can think of at least four cons off the top of my head that offer free hotel room if you GM enough slots. Also, in my early 20s, I made friends with other players in other parts of the country. When a con was scheduled near my house, they would come and stay with me for free. When a con was near their house, I would come stay with them for free. This was also well before the use of Internet and emails was prevalent. We worked out all arrangements by telephone.
Pack food from home and bring it with you so you don't have to spend any money on food at the con. If you stock up on non-perishable food when you put the $10 a month aside for transportation, then you are fairly well covered.
Overall, you could attend a con if yo save up for a year, on less than $15 a month.
Where there is a will, there is a way.

As Mike Brock stated, at Origins you can earn a free stay. If you sign up to GM at least 7 slots then you earn a GM badge and a spot in a hotel with other GMs. As it stands now, I have hotel space for 4 more GMs. At the very least you will get a GM boon and a chance at the other boons. You can also watch Mike Brock slaughter groups in Bonekeep. Origins is June 12-16 this year and will be a lot of fun. If interested, please go to Origins GM Application. I could use a couple GMs for Thursday the 13th at 7pm, a few for scattered HQ slots, and Overfill/Backup GM spots.

Is that a west/midwest thing? Can't say I've ever seen a free hotel offer at a con. (course i'm a little out of the loop on cons, they don't seem to advertise much here)
No. I know that Scarab offers free hotel rooms for their con in South Carolina for GMs. I believe MegaCon in Orlando also . offers rooms for free to GMs who volunteer a minimum number of slots. Mobicon in Mobile, AL, offered GMs free hotel rooms this year as well.
In the past, ConNooga in Chattanooga has offered free rooms to GMs but I don't know if they do or not any longer. Likewise for DragonCon in Atlanta.

$98?
Wow guess, I'm not in most places :)$252 is the cheapest and that requires SIX days on the road and more than a week's worth of lost wages. [/thread derail]
Ok, then I will concede $252. That's $21 a month saved. This cost will be different depending on where you are traveling from and traveling to.
Edit: Just checked and Seattle to Atlanta is $129 with an advanced purchase and $249 without advanced purchase so I guess you would have to plan to buy the ticket a little early. And it advises trip time is 2 days, 13 hours, 5 minutes (so less than 5 fully days travel if you account for round trip). So, I'm not sure where you are coming from or going to but that is one of the longest trips you can take Greyhound. Another quick check showed Seattle to San Francisco for Kubla Con on Memorial Day weekend was $70 and Seattle to Indianapolis for Gen Con was $119.
Or you can use the fallback and ask fellow local gamers if someone is going, and if you can bum a ride with them, or split the costs of travel, which would probably be substantially lower than Greyhound. Driving from Atlanta to Indianapolis for Gen Con every year, in a Ford F-150 that isn't exactly fuel efficient, was about $120 in gas round trip and 16 hours traveling 8 one way). With 4 of us, we could split the cost of fuel and it would cost each of us $30 for round trip travel to and from Gen Con. If you want to account for inflation, then round it to $50 for fuel per person, and that would leave you having to save about $4.50 a month to pay your share. On a side note, we would pack a lunch and cooler of drinks for the trip so there would be no food costs for travel either. The cost breaks down even less when you count the years there were 5-6 of us in the same vehicle heading up. Of course there were some years, I told everyone riding with me not to worry about any travel costs and just buy me a beer sometime during the weekend. *shrug*
I know there was a car full that drove from Winnipeg to Seattle last year for PaizoCon and I am guessing it cost each person in the vehicle less than $50 round trip for travel.
If you want to go one step further, look for someone who is relocating for business and offer to relocate their vehicle for them. It is more common than you might think. From a quick google search:
---------------
7. Transport other people’s vehicles
In a nutshell: When people move from one place to another, they often have their car sent—and that’s where you come in. Start by inquiring directly with car rental or relocation companies, some of whom need drivers to move vehicles from one city to another in a limited number of days. Checking for ads or advertising your own services in city, community, or university newspaper classified sections could also bring you in contact with a car owner in need of a driver. Try advertising and looking in both the city where you are and in the city that you want to travel to. Australia-based rental companies including Britz (www.britz.com.au), and Maui (www.maui.com.au) require occasional relocations throughout the year. And at season's end, they often need to move a number of vehicles en-masse to a specific location due to seasonal demand. Keep in mind that many companies require you to be at least 21 years of age.
What advocates say: As long as you have some flexibility, this is a simple and cheap solution for getting from point A to B.
-------------------
And it is a week's worth of lost wages if you don't accrue vacation time. If you accrue vacation time, then it is no lost wages. If you don't accrue vacation time at work, then yes, I guess you would lose wages for the time spent on vacation for your hobby. Unless, of course, you find a coworker who can cover your shifts and then you cover the coworker's shift for a few days when he or she wants the time off.
So, where there is a will, there is a way. You just have to be more flexible and willing to compromise.

When I started looking at conventions ... the cost was overwhelming... but then I took at look at ways I could save money
There are cons that pay for your badge if you GM X number of slots -- I judged that and generally the whole conventions
There are cons that will pay for your hotel room if you GM x number of slots -- judge that and what you need for the badge and there is a large chunk of the con bill right there
Driving... I know that I can get roughly 4 hours of driving on a 1/2 tank of gas with my car. Since the majority of the cons I would travel to would be w/in a 6 hour drive; all I needed was one person to ride with me to split the cost of gas -- we each take a tankful and call it happy
If I have to spring for the hotel; I look for something that is close to the venue, however, not right on top of it. I also realize I'm not willing to compromise too much on the hotel so while I don't look at super 8s and motel 6s ... I do look at pretty much anything else to see what the lowest price is for my money.
I don't mind driving in a few minutes if I need to.
If where you're going charges for parking.. make sure the person(s) riding with you know that they need to help with the parking -- then I look for more to help as that can get expensive.
Pack food as Mike said... if you have a card for a warehouse store that is going to be your best bet for lots of travel foods at a decent price .. in addition a flat of water or energy drink is going to be cheaper as well and give you hydration on the drive.
In all reality on a trip all you should have to stop for is to pee and if you need to gas up before you get to the final destination... however, gas up before you leave (should be elementary) and plan your route.. there are websites that give you the cheapest gas prices of any given location ... figure out where you'll be when you think you need to gas up and find out where the cheapest price will be and set your GPS for that...

What is to stop you from hosting your own convention?
If travelling is too expensive then work with a VC in your area to start your own con. In the end it is a lot more work, but you can make money doing it. I know a couple of guys that do so.
You pay for advertising(sometimes) and a place to host it. The DMs do it for free to get in for free.
