So our local region has plenty of games that run scenarios and a very healthy group that play weekly. However, there is not much play in the sanctioned modules because our usual play is one session on a Tuesday night. As such, I am thinking of running a home group with PFS credit through just modules. This is mainly because I have one player in my home group who is not to keen on the scenario (4-5 hr) play but I am trying to convert him to PFS. So my question's are:
1)Is it possible to run purely sanctioned modules from level 1-whatever? I am working on an order of play but I am wondering if someone has already done this and posted it. I will post my order later if it hasn't been done.
2) Sanctioned modules do not give the same fame per xp ratio that you get in scenarios. Will players be behind in fame and thus behind in magic item acquisition because they don't do scenarios?
Crypt of the Everflame, and Masks of the living god are a mini series.
Masks is a level 3 module, but larger groups or more experienced players will find it possible to play up.
Crypt 1
Masks 2
Midnight Mirror 3
Carrion Hill 4
Shore to sea 5
Cult of ebon destroyers 6
no response from deepmar 7
Realm of fellknight queen 8
the harrowing 9
Curse of the riven sky 10
The pheonix tournament 11
I'm sure you can grab another scenario in the ranges (or, honestly just play another at level 1, and be more appropriately leveled for them.
I figured out that if you GM all of these and apply optimal credit you get ~141k gold, about 20k more than pure GMing your way to 12 :D (I guess this is because you're kind of half playing up every adventure :D)
I'm doing almost this exact same thing with my home group, they want a more... "full" adventure feel scenarios feel truncated and less "cool" to them.
my plan specifically is.
Crypt, Masks, Mirror, Carrion, Shore, Cult, harrowing, curse, Ruby tournament, then play 3 normal level 7-11's :D. Either the Echoes of Everwar series or Rats around the mountain and something else :D
My worry is that although you have more gold as a player. You have less Fame - about 20 less than if you had played scenarios (most players get full fame on all scenarios) - to use that money on.
Looking at list the modules I was thinking something similar to your list. However, I has thought to run Godsmouth at 1 and then Crypt at 2. This would then align most modules at the appropriate lvl instead of playing up on most. Also, you need to swap out Cult for Fellnight. Cult has a lvl range of 7-9 and you are playing it at 6. You could also play Academy at 12 and Iron Medusa at 13 but then you have no way of getting into Witchwar.
yeah, my group actually ran first steps already, so we're aligned appropriately.
20 less PP is only ~8000ish gold assuming you're willing to hold on to it for a rez and restorations.
the fame is a bit sketchy, but there aren't many items in the really expensive range.
When you hit each level your max purchases will be the following.
when you hit level
level 02 - nothing
level 03 - 500
level 04 - 1500
level 05 - 3000
level 06 - 5250
level 07 - 8000
level 08 - 11750
level 09 - 16500
level 10 - 23000
level 11 - 31000
level 12 - 31000 (if you play a series and they get at least 5 PP it's 41000) which is kind of a big deal.
I ran first steps, and my group was like "well this is alright, but I'd rather do a more full adventure" so I'm transitioning and a little ahead on PP :D
I don't think you're in too much trouble here. Level 7 you can easily upgrade to +2 weapon, the rough part is that it's level 6 before you can buy stat items.
Are there any such items available on the Chronicle sheets?
It might be worthwhile to look ahead at the Chronicle sheets for those modules where there's a choice, to see what's more useful for the PCs.
Also, While I *really* like Carrion Hill, I imagine that the double hit of Carrion Hill / Shore to Sea -- and both of them with the party 1 - 2 levels below where the adventure expects them to be -- will eliminate the need to choose higher-level adventures.

My group is pretty experienced and they tend to be pretty strong character builds, I'm hoping that choosing very challenging modules and "playing up" will keep the having fun and challenged. Only one of the players has any plans of playing more PFS, but I'm hoping it gets the others hooked :D.
Though I will admit, selfishly, I want to be PLAYING but I'm the only one willing to GM right now so I want to get some character levels out of it hah. My real goal is to get someone to the high teens for next years gencon special.
We just finished the game I actually wrote, and it's hard to get excited about running a Pre-gen, and I don't have time to write another game lol.
Sigh...Just took a look at it. That is a delay of 3 and a half levels of play. If playing scenarios you can get a +2 weapon after 14 scenarios - So before lvl 6. Where as if you play just modules you are delayed all the way to lvl 8. EDIT: Its also a 3 lvl delay to +3 weapons. That's a big difference.
That's is going to be a hard sell to the players. I know that Mark and Mike have it expected that players don't earn full fame but that is not what I have seen in play.
Yeah, you're probably better off interjecting something like quest for perfection, or the Devil We know. any of the series of scenarios and just augment them a bit to make them flow together better.
Yeah. I getting the feeling that playing modules alone will leave players behind the wealth curve so to speak. I am not sure if this is truly the case but players that are used to certain items by certain levels in PFS will definitely feel the delay. I honestly didn't think it was that big of a deal until I wanted to try a module only character run and we started looking into the math. And although there may be some items on the chronicle sheets that can alleviate this, it is not going to cover enough ground to please all players. It will unfortunately be enough to make some players jealous and angry that the break didn't go their way.
Oh well. Maybe I will try your idea of mixing in some scenario threads. Maybe if I set them up right, the player who isn't into scenario style play won't notice.
