Scrying

Pathfinder RPG General Discussion

General rule
Lead sheeting or magical protection blocks a scrying spell, and you sense that the spell is blocked.

Scrying
What does, apart from putting yourself in a constant leadsheeted house, help against scrying? I have a powerful wizard who knows his sister is being scryed on daily, but can't seem to do anything against it?

**F (a silver mirror worth 1,000 gp) <- tis does not get destroyed, so as soon as she has one, it's scry-time..

Nondetection: 50gp per day sounds a bit harsh.

Detect scrying would let me know, but within 40ft.. Means i have to eat/sleep/... with my sister, and I still can't do anything about it.

Mind Blank blocks all divination spells.

True, thanks.. He is level 12 though :P

And level 8 spell vs level 4 spell... Seems really really unfair.

And what bugs me, you would never be safe.. You would have to prepare it every morning, for the rest of your life.. While the scryer can pick his moment... and sometimes, you just won't know, so you have to be careful :s

Yup. Just like if you pay attention to what modern surveillance technology can do. Live crazy paranoid or get used to no privacy.

If sister doesn't use magic, then a (Un?)Hallow with a Dispel Magic rider should get a free auto-dispel against that Scry sensor every time it enters the area.

Lead lining the house would certainly work. DM call as to effectiveness.

Dimension Lock the area, so that even if they're scrying, she doesn't have to worry about a full on scry/teleport/die.

Why do they care about scrying her? If it's for info gathering, then start controlling the info stream to manipulate the scryers.

...

Preferably, rather than protecting her from the scrying, hang out until you detect an attempt, make the check to get its caster's image and direction. Alternatively, Spell Turning or ring thereof on the sister so she scrys them instead.

By this or other ways, get enough info to visit the scryer and make sure they never scry again.

You can do that?

Also: the wizard already knows the scryer, but she is out of his league.. :s

This is a pretty evil idea, but someone else on the boards came up with it and I thought it was pretty neat.

First you detect when she's been getting scryed on.
While being scryed, kill her.
Presumably once dead the scryer will stop.
Double check that they aren't scrying on you.
Take her corpse to a cleric & revive her.

I like to think of it as "Extreme Witness Protection".

I frikking love it :D

Rick, keep in mind that after being killed by her brother... her soul may not be willing to return to its body. Also, it's about as expensive as the rest of your options... lead-lining a single room is significantly cheaper.

You can't make the perception checks to know when the scrying sensor is present in order to censor yourself? +Perception items or a hireling with high Perception might be another option (hireling could double as a guard and might cost as little as 1g/day instead of the 50g/day for nondetection.)

Instead of working against your DM, though... work with them. Use some diplomacy/gather information and track down an inn or tavern that is already led-lined. If you can't manage that, track down an NPC who can.

Some lateral thinking is going to be your best option. As a final note; keep in mind that the scryer can probably communicate through their sensor. Every sensor you detect is a chance to communicate with them and try to reach a diplomatic resolution.

Mage's private sanctum.

Do you know why she's being scryed upon? And do you know how -> Scry, Clairvoyance, a magic item. The more information you have about your Scryer the better off you are. If, for example, she's using a Mirror you could smash it (or steal it).

Does you sister need to remain active and conscious? If not you could potentially Sequester her. Just as effective as Mind Blank vs divination magic but would render her both Invisible and comatose for the duration (as well as protected vs divination).

Screen could potentially let you stage a scene (of her death or almost anything else to throw off the scryer).

The drawback of either of the above is both Sequester (7th) and Screen (8th) are spells above your current casting abilities. Sequester also assumes your sister is willing.

Another possibility that you might make work that's within your potential casting ability would be to pair up False Vision with using Invisibility of some sort for a "poor man's" Sequester. Just need to make sure your sister is close enough to the center of the 10ft zone the scryer sees to not make it apparent something is amiss.

Detect Scrying:
Detect Scrying

School divination; Level bard 4, sorcerer/wizard 4

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S, M (a piece of mirror and a miniature brass hearing trumpet)

Range 40 ft.

Area 40-ft.-radius emanation centered on you

Duration 24 hours

Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

You immediately become aware of any attempt to observe you by means of a divination (scrying) spell or effect. The spell's area radiates from you and moves as you move. You know the location of every magical sensor within the spell's area.

If the scrying attempt originates within the area, you also know its location; otherwise, you and the scrier immediately make opposed caster level checks (1d20 + caster level). If you at least match the scrier's result, you get a visual image of the scrier and an accurate sense of his direction and distance from you.

Even if the odds are against you, you only need to be lucky once to ID the scryer, then the party has a new target. There's very little a determined adventuring company cannot accomplish.

If you already know who's scrying, then you just need to know why, and work it from that angle. Resolve that. Again, if it's just to get info, then control that info.

If the scryer's out of your league, then make allies that are also out of your league and pit them against her. Get protected by joining a rival organization. If she's got enemies, see if you can help them take her down.

Slightly more complicated plot to end the scrying:

Find yourself a random humanoid corpse and use the sculpt corpse spell to duplicate the sister. Place the corpse in the bed, with the sister either standing by invisible or hiding under the bed. Summon a critter of some sort to maul the corpse once scrying is detected.

Slightly less savory option: same as above, but animate the dupli-corpse as a zombie and still kill it. You get some movement out of it that way.

If you could somehow get her to use a scroll of twine double, she could use that to throw off the scrying attempts. Only problem with twine double is that it takes 10 minutes to cast, but lasts for only 1 minute per caster level. That may be an error, but that's how it's written.

Ahum, i *am* the dm xp
Mages private sanctum sounds perfect.. permanancy it, should do the job :)
It`s a "bad guy" that got away, and the characters is smartenough to figure something out.. i however could not find anything
(And the wizard doesnt want to scry'n'fry)

Thanks a lot you guys!

Not sure if this would work but as a cheaper alternative, casting a complex illusion with Permanency around the area might do the trick. Assuming it fools sensors of course.
