Liberty's Edge

When a Good caster summons a monster with a summon monster spell, some of them gain the Celestial template. The creatures have the same alignment of the caster, and the spell type becomes good.

Does the celestial template allow the creature's attacks to overcome damage reduction from good aligned weapons?

Celestial creature gets smite evil.

The celestial template's version of smite evil isn't the same as the paladin's version of smite evil.

It doesn't grant the ability to overcome DR, and since the celestial template also doesn't grant the good subtype, the creatures are out of luck against DR/good.

Liberty's Edge

Ok, so the smite evil bypasses the damage reduction. I see that in the Paladin description (does the celestial smite work just like the Paladin smite—extra damage against evil subtype outsiders, evil dragons, and undead, plus a bonus to AC against targets of the smite?)

Does the celestial creature's natural attack bypass good DR when the smite isn't being used? (In my case, it is being summoned by a summoner so the duration is longer, thus the likelihood of attacking multiple opponents is greater). I don't see anything that says that the creature's subtype is changed to good, only that the spell being cast has a good alignment and the creature's alignment is good.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Are. Thanks!

The smite evil granted by the celestial template is not the same as the Paladin's smite evil.

The smite evil rules you use can be found here.

Basically, add their Cha bonus if any to attack rolls, and their HD to damage. That's it.

As Are pointed out, the creature doesn't get the good subtype, so their natural attacks don't count as good for that reason.

Thanks Cheapy!

Resurrecting this thread because we're dealing with something that seems quite silly, but I can't see it corrected anywhere:

The rules state that creatures with asterisks get Celestial or Fiendish templates. The asterisked creatures are all dumb animals. But they get Smite Evil, Darkvision, and so forth, because they get the Celestial template.

But Bralani Azata do not have an asterisk, since they're already good. So they DON'T get the Celestial Template, and they DON'T get Smite Evil?

This makes no sense. Is there an FAQ somewhere on this?

I'm sorry, what part of this doesn't make sense?

The fact that I can summon an octopus, and that octopus gains Smite Evil because it has the Celestial Template, but if I summon a Hound Archon or a Bralani Azata they do *NOT* get Smite Evil, because they do NOT get the Celestial Template.

So summoning actual "celestial" beings with Summon Monster is a poor choice if you're hoping to fight evil creatures...

(Yeah, we could get into a huge argument about Hound Archons having Magic Circle and all that, but letting rhinos and octopi smite while archons and azata can't seems pretty backwards.)

Ummm, I hope you realize that...

1. The archons, angels, whatever have their own abilities to fight undead (not to mention that many animals don't have the CHA to make smite evil worth it

And

2. Gaining the celestial template implies that one isn't already celestial. Archons, for example, don't get the template because they're already from the upper planes.
