Ulfen War Drummer Build

Advice

Shadow Lodge

Hail All,
After realizing that a card throwing is not possible in society I began hunting my next PFS character. What I came up with was a Ulfen War Drummer. He uses Perform: Percussion to inspire himself and allies by beating on his shield, and occasionally using his enemies heads to act as a drum stick. But I have been struggling with how to build it.
Obviously he is a Bard and I have ruled out savage skuld for a couple reasons. I have read a thread that mentions using the Battle Harold but am not sure that would work with the drumming idea.

Any ideas on how it should look?
Do you think a single Shield could be an effective weapon? What if two handed? Any other percussion based ideas that might work better?
What archetypes do you recommend?
Do you think multiclassing is a good idea?

Thanks for the help!

Shadow Lodge

Well since I didn't get any advice I put together a build idea. Any opinions are welcome!

Str 18:+3
Dex 10:+0
Con 14:+2
Wis 8: -1
Int 12:+1
Cha 14:+2

Class
1 Bard:Arcane Duelist: Bardic Performance; spells
-Arcane Strike,
-Lingering Performance
-Gang up
2 Cavileer: Stratigist: Tactician, Order: Dragon, Mount
Outflank
3 Bard:Arcane Duelist:
-Combat Casting
-Power Attack
4 Cavileer: Stratigist: Aid Bonus
5 Bard:Arcane Duelist:Inspire Compentence 2
-Practiced Tactician
6 Battle Herald:Inspiring Command, Voice of Authority
7 Battle Herald:Easy March
-Practiced Tactician
8 Battle Herald:2nd Inspiring Command
9 Battle Herald:Inspiring Command: (2), Inspire Greatness
-Extra Performance
10 Battle Herald:3rd Inspiring Command, Banner
11 Battle Herald:
-Precise Strike
-Unknown Feat
12 Battle Herald: Inspiring Command: (3), Demanding Challenge

The idea is I bang my shield and order allies for the first round or so and then wade in and weak havoc. Granting huge bonuses to everyone, especially those who flank. I have like 2 spells, one will be cure and another with be a buff. I used the Arcane duelist to give me the ability to use my intimidate as a check against fear spells. But other archetype ideas are welcome.
Any recommendations?

You don't actually need to use any Perform Skill when Inspiring Courage. Only a select few performances (like countersong and distraction) actually use a perform skill.

You could just use a weapon and shield and describe your Inspire Courage as banging the weapon on the shield, but it's really unnecessary--you really just need to pick if it's auditory or visual when you start.

The build you've laid out looks quite enjoyable, but I wonder if it's needlessly complicated and focused. Battle Herald seems to be designed to give you some of the best of the support options of both Cavalier and Bard. That would certainly seem to add to your versatility, giving you marginally better martial performance and a broad array of small buffs. But action economy is still going to limit your ability to do it all (a common problem for support characters).

Couldn't a traditional Bard net you similar benefits via its more robust spell selection? Spells like Gallant Inspiration, Haste and Heroism are gold and all the spells with musical names seem much more entertaining if you picture the accompanying performance to be a ferocious drumming upon a shield.

It might be entertaining to take a dip into Fighter just to pick up Tower Shield proficiency... and make it ring like a taiko drum.

@Mplindustries
Thanks,I didn't know that. That is good as I am considering a two handed weapon. maybe pounding on my chest?

@Peasant
yeah, I could have a lot more versatility with a straight bard. But I don't think I could get what I am getting out of this build. I can add a lot of buffing and power to a team and I can lead that team. Bards are very versatile but that's not what I am after here.

I love the idea of the tower shield though! and would totally do it if tower shields didn't give a -2 to hit even if proficient.

how are you taking gang up at lvl 1 without the pre-req ?

Shadow Lodge

because I completely forgot the prereq :-P I guess I will need to think up a different feat. Any recommendations?

Shadow Lodge

And now I am back because I realized that multiclassing into Battle Harold was terrible because they use competence bonuses and thus don't stack with bardic courage. The idea was to get the to hit and damage up for a large group and lead them into battle. Sigh

Guess I am looking at pure bard again.

1) Pure Bard is pretty much always going to be better than Battle Herald

2) You couldn't combine them anyway--you can't maintain both types of performances at once. You can sort of "twist" the songs like an old school Everquest Bard via Lingering Performance, but you'd have to spend most of your actions switching between the two types.

Shadow Lodge

Well the idea was to stagger them. I wouldn't get a lot of full attacks but the bonuses to allies (I thought) would be worth it.

But here is my new build. Its not a pure bard, I like multiclassing to much I guess :-P but it seems very solid.

Savage Skald- Bardic Performance; spells
-Improved Shield Bash, Lingering Performance,
Freebooters Bain- Rangers Focus
Freebooters Bain- Combat style: sword & Shield
-Shield Slam, Power Attack
Savage Skald- Versitile Performance, well versed
Savage Skald- Inspire Competence +2
-Arcane Strike
Savage Skald
Savage Skald- Inspire Courage +2, Lore Master
-Cornugon Smash
Savage Skald- Incite Rage, Versitile Performance
Savage Skald- Inspire Competence +3
-Feat?
Savage Skald- Dirge of Doom
Savage Skald- inspire Greatness
-Feat?
Savage Skald- Song of Valhalla, Versatile performance

I tried a build with the Savage Skuld. I am not sure if I like it yet but summoning hordes of allies was just to neat to pass up. I took ranger to get Shield Slam which can be a lot of fun. I would buff inspire and bain during combat and save my spells from pre-combat/first round buffs. I keep a fairly high AC once I get Mithril Breast Plate and a Heavy Shield. Somewhere around 18 with no magic. And I can hand out the damage. 1d6+22 at level 12 with no spells or magic items. But I don't know what to do with my last feats. Any ideas?
