Nah, no rush. Eyes of the Ten is an easy series, with nothing unusual. You can run it cold.

I think my only other request would be for Kyle to instruct me how on an efficient way to bottle the tears of the players who's characters have died. I've tried doing it manually, and that's just a ton of work.

Do you have some kind of machine like out of the Jetson's or something?

Oddly enough, I've never actually killed a PC while GMing in Society. I killed a few when I used to GM our home group back in the day, but not since returning to the RPG hobby relatively recently. So I got my first GM star before my first GM kill.

But I'm running Dalsine Affair this evening, so we'll see how that goes. I actually plan on warning them before we start about the reputation of the adventure, and that they shouldn't play a PC they're particularly attached to unless they have the resources for a Raise Dead. Then, I'll just roll everything in the open, pull no punches, and see how it goes.

At Winter War, I'm running a scenario that really can't kill the PCs, unless they play really stupid, and one that has a reputation for being killer, so I'm curious to see how those will go.

If you're running Dalsine and that snow-white record doesn't go by the wayside, you're just not trying. :-)

Back when I played it, nobody died. The GM's dice were just very cold.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Same here. Since then I have run it twice and not killed anyone. However both times I ran it, the thing that makes it so deadly happened to be attacking the highest level PC in the party (level 4 or 5 in a party of level 1s and 2s) and they were playing down. I wasnt set on attacking that one particular PC, thats just the person who was in the best position to be attacked each time. :P

Collecting tears isn't about efficiency. It's more rewarding to savor each and every drop; collected or devoured.

That's similar to what just happened to me. Subtier 3-4 table, and I hit a level 5 for enough damage to get him down to 2 HP, but he was able to withdraw and heal.

So I'm up to 18 tables GMed in PFS without a kill. I'll have to hunt for my first PC kill at Winter War this weekend. ;P

Silver Crusade

Hello,
I'm an experienced gamer but new to Pathfinder and conventions in the IL area.

I found out about Winter Wars about 2 hours after pre registration closed. So I have a few questions. Hopefully, Bob will see this and be able to answer since it looks like he is organizing it all.

I received Pathfinder for Xmas so I've just started reading those books. I played my first module Sunday.

First, I've looked over the Winter wars events. I've looked at all the PFS events. Some are number with the roman numerals that indicate they are sequels while some have A, B, C after them so I'm not sure what's up with that. Can someone explain it to me?

Also, Sunday we went through The Disappeared. Is there more than one part to this? I spotted some with A, B, C after them listed so I'm not sure what it means. As I understand it, since I did it Sunday, I can't do that scenario again. Is this correct?

Also, I want to make sure I'll be able to get into a couple of games when I register. I hate going to conventions, spending that money and not being able to play in games I want. Will there be enough gms/games?

I am familiar with conventions, and know that preregistration is usually a good idea, and now it'll pretty much be first come first serve, but given the number of folks playing pfs, I did wonder if alternate plans were made to accommodate more folks if the games fill up.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated,
thanks in advance,
Blaze

Sczarni 5/5

I have been to some of Bob's conventions before, and I don't recall any time where someone who wanted to play couldn't. You may have to use a higher level pre-generated character, but you would be able to sit at a table. I also think Bob pulled out of GMing some slots so he could run games for additional people that make there way to the con.

The first steps series is intended for newer players (although any can play), and you must be level 1. However you don't need to play them in order, or even the whole series. The Thornkeep modules take 2 slots, so you have to be there for both.

You cannot play The Disappeared again, as you can generally only play one scenario per player. There are some exceptions..any of the First Steps scenarios or level 1 modules (Master of the Fallen Fortress, We Be Goblins, etc) can be replayed any number of times for a level 1 character.

Hope to see you there!

Silver Crusade

Thanks Rene,
Do YOu know why there is a A, B or C after each of the disappeared events? It only has 1 part right?

Sczarni 5/5

Correct. The A,B, and C probably refers to which slot the game is for. You can tell by Warhorn.net, there are multiple times that The Disappeared is being offered.

Silver Crusade 4/5

CyberBlaze,

You are correct that the Roman numerals on some adventures indicate sequels. For instance, The Devil We Know is a four part series that will be run in four sessions at Winter War.

From what I can tell, the letters after some sessions just indicate multiple sessions of the same adventure being offered. I've never seen this at any other convention, so it's not any kind of standard.

I'm not sure how full the tables are for this convention. I know there was one adventure I wanted to play that I couldn't get into. But I know most conventions try to accommodate as many people as possible, even if there are a lot of last minute entries.

And personally, I'm planning to bring a couple of spare adventures that I can run at a moment's notice if we have too many players and not enough GMs. I won't be able to do this every session, but I can probably step up to run something one or two sessions, on top of the two sessions I'm actually scheduled to run.

5/5

For the scenarios that are being offered multiple times they appended an A, B, or C to differentiate between them. The A, B, C does not indicate the scenario has multiple parts.

Silver Crusade

Cool. Thanks for the timely follow up guys.

My biggest problem is when I sign up my other half will be signing up too. So I'm planning the games we play since he normally organizes the stuff for me when we play go to our Flames of War events.

Thanks
blaze

Liberty's Edge 4/5

For WinterWar after pre is over. They put all the slots up on the wall with how many are in each. As they fill up, from people walking in to register they have someone marking them off. Now this does not mean that other tables wont be offered as needed. Bob has asked for stand by GM,s and if enough people want to play and a GM is available than things can be done to accomplish this.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

Wow, I love this community. Ask a question and a dozen people will jump to help you out. Thanks for the assist guys!

@CyberBlaze...everything said is pretty much spot on. Many of the events are full, but some are not. As long as you have a little flexibility in your expectations, I'm sure we can work you into as many games as you'd like to play. I'm not sure what the letter (A,B,C,etc) after the title means, but it is something the convention staff put there and has nothing to do with us. If there is a roman numeral after the title, then it is part of a multi-part arc. Hopefully, some of the GM's will volunteer to by on standby during slots they are not officially running a game so I can draft them to cover tables for walk-up players. Regardless, don't fret, we are nearly always able to find a table for you. Check in with me at HQ when you arrive.

My apologies, just found this discussion... I'm the chairman of WW, so perhaps I can answer some non-PFS questions about the convention. And if you want to talk at WW, feel free to chat with me, I try to spend some time around all the events.

Warhorn: The problem our convention has with Warhorn is that it did not handle what we call "per slot locking", which means to us that if you signed up for an event on Saturday Afternoon, access to Warhorn allowed you to muster for any and all events, instead of just the timeslot you had actually signed up for, leading to events being full on Warhorn while half of the events actually had open seats. Now, this was a problem back in LG days, and may not be an issue now with Warhorn -- I lost track of Warhorn's management after a while.

Multiple Events A/B/C/D: Our convention database primary key for the Event Submission table is by unique event name. So we needed a way to track these. When we first had this problem (1991?) GenCon used A/B/C/D for some events, so we used it because many people understood what it meant. Not so much anymore, so that might need to go into the site FAQ. I'll make a note about that for after Sunday, once I regain consciousness. Events that continue or have multiple parts should explain in the description or have (continued) in the event name in the program.

Preregistration Closing: We have found a problem with taking payments via Paypal, and closed pre-reg early to account for it.

I'll try to stay up with postings here, but just look for the purple badge attendees at WW - those are our committee members. And I'll be around the PFS room from time to time, so if you have any questions, please feel free to chat with me at WW, or drop me a note at dmckinne@winterwar.org.

We'll see you all this weekend at Winter War!

Interestingly, Hawthorne nearly found himself a similarly-perished pile of electrified ash in the 10-11 tier of Feast of Sigils (Nathan tried pretty hard to kill us too, LOL). Survived, but not by much.

But hey, even though Solomon never got off the stairs, Mill got to 12th level when we at last triumphed, so t'was all good, you know? (Well, for our table. Not so much for Lux, I guess.)

Silver Crusade 4/5

Thanks to Bob and everyone else involved in organizing, and to all the GMs who ran games!!! It was a good convention, and I had a lot of fun, even though my PCs seemed to have lots of problems with their faction missions, and I didn't manage to kill anyone in the two sessions I GMed.

Sczarni 5/5

Thanks Bob. I'm glad we had an overflow room and were able to seat pretty almost everyone who wanted to play.

I had a blast at Winter War! I met some great players and GM's as well as taught new Pathfinder Society players the in's and out's of society play. It was a great experience!

This weekend, a lot of seasoned, veteran Pathfinders were tested to their limits against the cult of Lissala. The Feast of Sigils as well as the Refuge of Time claimed two Pathfinders who meddled in the Lissalan rituals. However, a mere death was not going to hinder them from continuing on their mission. They were brought back to life to continue on their quest!

I would have to say that out of all the tables I ran this weekend, my MVP would be Thunderspirit's character, Hawthorne, who saved his party from utter death. He was blessed with his ability, that he received in the 2010 PaizoCon Grand Convocation, to grant his allies to treat their Constitution score as 5 higher when they become unconscious to determine when they die. LITERALLY, saved the party cleric, magus, and cavalier. Great players, balanced party, couldn't have asked for a better table.

All the tables I ran were great and I hope for a great Winter War 41 next year!

Silver Crusade 4/5

I had a great time at Winter War, thanks in large part to all the other awesome players and GMs there. I met a lot of great people who I cant wait to play with or GM for again.

Thunderspirit, thanks very much from saving my cleric from becoming another notch on the belt of Nathan King. ;)
Seriously though, that was probably my favorite played table of the con. It was a lot of fun, despite me being constantly close to death in that last battle. :P
If you havent sat at a table with Nathan King, though, you should definitely do it. He is great GM. Bring your A-game, though, if you dont want to wind up being a greasy spot.

I GMed a table of Severing Ties and 2 of The Disappeared. All three tables were great, but the first table of the Disappeared was probably the most fun I had GMing. We blew through the scenario in 2.5 hours, with both groups getting the 'mission accomplished' (Which I forgot to mark on the second sign in sheet, Bob). On the way home, though, I realized I had completely forgotten about the same exact fight both times I ran it. We skipped right over it. :/

Cant wait for next year!

Glad I was able to contribute something — Nathan did a great job of making me feel Hawthorne was wholly outclassed playing the 10-11 tier of Feast ;-) — and that the table had a good time. That's winning. :-D

I had a table that seemed to enjoy the creepiness of In Wrath's Shadow I ran Saturday morning, and had a blast running Dawn of the Scarlet Sun for my Saturday evening table. I hope they enjoyed themselves likewise. Hoping I can make this one next time around too!

I wish that I could have run more, but I had a blast playing at Winter War. My favorite table was the Feast of Sigils table. I ended up helping another player complete his mission to have him (and hid father) complete my own, and thus I ended up playing up the consequences.

Spoiler:
I did not care that I almost collapsed the 5' high chamber by having a huge tiger and a gargantuan dinosaur, but that caster was going down.

I will also be posting an issue that some of the players (and GMs) had about the fact that no dealers were selling any Pathfinder Miniatures this year. Look for that post in the Paizo Products section of the boards.

I know at least one person who bought the box with the 4 iconic minis from one of the vendors. And when I checked out the vendors briefly, I saw one of them had a couple of the random mini packs on display, though not very many.

Without him sacrificing himself though it would have been a TPK for certain. Daggid owes you one.

A certain unnamed VC from KC should learn not to pull all the combats at once. :P Silly summoner doesn't realize the eidolon is supposed to go first, not him.

Had a blast this weekend Bob. Last time I went to a convention to simply play was a couple of years back, and I definitely missed it.

This is the 2nd year in a row for Winter War, and I hope to make it back next year.

I saw at least one vendor who was selling both Rise of the Runelords and Shattered Star minis, though I think the Shattered Star ones went quickly.

Another vendor I saw had the 4 iconic heroes set for half price. my wife and I both took advantage of that, despite already having a set of them each. those sets will make nice prizes for our upcoming cons.

There was another vendor I saw that had some used Paizo books (mostly APs, but some others too) that were half price. I bought a copy of the Faction Guide, Andoran Spirit of liberty, the Sargava book, and Adventurer's Armory for like $23.

There were definitely a couple of very fun moments at the tables.

Probably the most epic image in combat at my tables was Seth and Kristen Gipson's tag team attack when I GMed The Devil We Know, part 4. His wizard cast Spiked Pit under two bad guys, who fell in. Her companion animal is a large ape, so the ape climbed part of the way down into the pit, hung upside down 10 feet above the bad guys, and proceeded to pound on them. And if that image isn't epic enough, her ape has reach, and the bad guys don't. So they couldn't reach to fight back with melee weapons, and they couldn't fire their ranged weapons without provoking. Needless to say, it didn't take long for the ape to pound the mooks into paste while the rest of the party dealt with their leader. And it's not like they planned any of this in advance - Kristen came up with the idea to send her ape after the mooks only after they were in the pit and the rest of the party was ignoring them.

Well, I heard from some people in the room on Sunday about not being able to buy minis. I was not able to make it to the dealers area due to playing, con duties, and other needs (eating and sleep come to mind). So I may have been mistaken. But I can only say what I heard.

I am new to Pathfinder & played it for the first time at Winter War 40. I got my Pathfinder # and played 5 modules at the con. I got home & registered myself on the Paizo website. So far, so good. I even looked under the 'sessions' tab & low & behold, 2 of the sessions were already logged to me.

But under 'my account' it says I have no registered characters. So I clicked on the link to fill out my character info & register it. But when I 'submit', I get the error that that character name is already in use & the registration reverts back to no characters registered to me.

Help? Now what?

I would like to THANK all the out of town folks, who came and helped make this a great CON. Even with winter fantasy going on we had a great turn out. Now I must save up funds and visit other's con's. Again Thanks Bob and all the GM's. If left to me it would not have been so great.

Sczarni 5/5

@Dawfyyd: give your character a last name and you should be okay. each name must be unique across the system, and it looks like someone else named their character dawfyyd.

Silver Crusade

Hi Gang,
Well, we made it to the con and had a blast. We managed to get into a few games, but many were full when we registered, esp first day. But that did not stop me from trying.

I am glad I didn't too. We showed up in room and Bob found us games. We had to play one game with a pregen 7th level character as it was first game.

After that, we managed to register for a few games and showed up for the rest of the sessions to be worked in.

I want to make sure that all of the gms, Bob and those that were helping Bob involved know that they did a great job working in folks that weren't able to register. With the exception of Sunday Morning we played all of the slots with half walkup games. Several gms were generous enough to take on a 7th player so my husband and I could play in the same game. Thanks for that guys. The only reason we didn't try for a sunday morning game was because we were watching the weather and didn't want to make the 30 minute drive with the previous evenings forecast. When it turned out that it wasn't going to be as bad as the claimed we headed in for the last event which we had ragistered for and had a great time.

I'd also like to send out a special thank you to the gentleman, sorry I learned a lot of names over the weekend and I can't remember yours, who took our money up front each time we joined a game we'd joined. I'd say we was fairly busy over the weekend as he did it for others and as I noticed he'd returned with a new gaming badge for one of the players at my table who'd left his at home Sat morning.

My favorite character of the weekend? Reginald Pipwhistle (hope I spelled it right) One of 2 character that could speak goblin in our game and when the DM recited the goblin rhymes his character/player created some right back to him and told the Dm that's what he was telling them in Goblin. Rise of the goblin Guild I believe was the game. At one point the antics of the character even had the DM getting confused and we all told the DM he'd have to start rolling goblins to get distracted if it kept happening. We all had a good laugh throughout the game.

Another was listening to the Goblin chant Saturday. Seems all the players at the table really got into character for it and tried out their inner Goblin as the recited the poem and received an ovation from the room when they finished. I can just bet that group had a blast.

Thanks again,
Blaze

Like Rene said, if you add a last name, that might fix the problem you are having.

It was great having you at the table for The Disappeared! I'm happy you enjoyed it enough to want to continue to play!

I would like to thank Bob, the GMs, and all the other event staff for all their hard work. Winter War was a blast again this year. A special thanks goes out to Chris for running Thornkeep for us.

I also had a blast at my tables. I had alot of interesting rping, by combat based characters during Blakros Matrimony. Bruno breakbone sure does make a table very enjoy.

During my opportunities to play, also had very memorable experiences. Fromper already mentioned Kong in the spiked pit. I am proud to say Mill Oakenshield Dwarf Fighter/ Cleric of Abadar has became a seeker. Thanks to all my GMs, Jeff Morse, Nathan King, and Fromper.

was alot of fun. played in 5 slots and gmed 2 slots. The high tier green market game proved to be very challenging. watching Bruno grapple a 50' oak tree was most entertaining. Taking the battle way off the large map was a first. (again, we are so sorry Kristen)

It is no problem. I was just shocked more then anything. It is actually a very smart approach and I will have to remember that whenever I go to play it.

Well I kept saying that you could see right through him hoping someone would attempt a knowledge religion check. Well, I am finally home and rested to the point I am able to function again. :-)

Winter War was awesome, yet again. I cannot say thank you enough to the myriad of players and GMs who made this convention such a success. The task of organizer can be extremely challenging and you all made it easy for me. I heard nothing but great things about all the GMs and the games they ran (yes even Kyle Baird). As far as I could tell, there were a lot of tense & challenging moments, but few characters made the trip to Pharasma.

I do not have the final numbers yet, but will post them as soon as I can. It was clear that we could have added another 1-3 tables in each slot based on the number of walk-up players we had. I was concerned that Winter Fantasy would impact our attendance to the point we would decline from last year, but we flourished and grew despite the competition.

A few players commented to me that they were a bit disappointed that we decided not to offer the GenCon special this year. In an effort to give everyone what they want, we will be correcting that issue for next year. Offering a few older/past season scenarios worked out very well and I expect that will be something we try again next year. Thornkeep was a success and I expect we will offer modules in some form again next year.

I am a bit disappointed in myself for the way the prize support worked out. Paizo did a great job in supporting us with great prize support. I am sorry to say that our system did not work nearly as well as I had hoped and that will be an area of vast improvement next year. We will be using a completely different system, one that distributes the products more consistently throughout the convention and is a bit more visible to everyone. I have also come to the conclusion that you cannot organize if you GM. There is just too much to do to give either the attention it needs trying to do both. That will be corrected for next year as well.

Anyway, Winter War was a great success and I am proud to have been a part of it. I hope to see everyone there again next year and if you missed it this year, make plans to join us in 2014. You will not be disappointed.

Now I just need to figure out how to get Mike Brock to skip that "other" con and attend our, much better convention. Oh, and my plan to kidnap Erik Mona :-)
