Great job everyone! Such a wonderful start :)
p.s. I ask everyone to be very specific in their actions to eliminate the "but I meant..." moments that crop up afterward.
Xenh |
Moving things along slowly right now. Here's the chances for everyone to interact and come up with the next course of action.
The next event will wait until you put something into gear. Then it will be bloodshed and mayhem as is the norm in my games :)

I'm working 50+ hours this week so posting will likely be limited to one or two brief posts a day. Just so you don't mistake it for waning interest. ;)

Me too, and not only this week, probably for all of December (i hate this month).
Danke for the heads up!

With Christmas and New Years just around the corner this is a good time to touch base with everyone to determine what an appropriate pause of the game should look like. I know some of you find that time to be when you can post the most (outside of a couple days in there where your families selfishly want some of your time...how rude), so I don't want to leave you in the lurch.
If you had your druthers we would take off <insert how much time, and/or what dates here>
Personally I am off class during that period, so that opens up my availability, and I am working all three jobs straight through with only a couple days off, so I can go straight through, since cracking off a post from my phone each day isn't difficult.
Revery |
I will be off work from Dec 20 thru Jan 6, but I have my phone and a computer, so I will still be able to post. I'll be spending less time in front of the computer, though, so my posts will likely be limited to one/day on many days.
Gwendalyn |
The holidays won't really affect me, except for a couple of days off work (and therefore a little more time to post).
Xenh |
If someone has a few minutes today...
Would you go through the posts and let me know who has posted every day without missing one?
I'm handing out perfect attendance awards of +2 to a random attribute. If you're one of those that is meeting at least the minimum expectations agreed upon then I will roll a random D6 here and you can add the +2 to that attribute.
Revery |
Are you looking for a day being defined as midnight to midnight? What time zone? Starting what day, Nov 7th or 8th? Include any post, or actual IC posts only?

November 9th would be a decent starting point.
24 hours from 8:00am MST.
Any post works as long as its the same day and gives a heads up.
Revery |
If you go from Nov 9th (after we really got rolling), Sajeek, Gwendalyn and I posted every day, midnight thru midnight MST.

Congratulations!
Sajeek: 1d6 ⇒ 5 +2 to Wisdom
Gwendalyn: 1d6 ⇒ 1 +2 to Strength
Revery: 1d6 ⇒ 5 +2 to Wisdom
Gwendalyn |
Woohoo! I could've used more Wisdom or Constitution, but Strength is a really useful stat for me too. Verra nice. 8)
And I'd like to avoid ooc strategizing in this game, but seriously guys? Did you not see how vulnerable Gwendalyn was squirming out into the cave, with a very strong little goblin immediately grabbing her hair? And you'd rather try and each solo one out in the open -- including a bigger one this time -- with all of your backup back in the cave?
Eh. Enough about them, what about me. Do I get to post another round's worth of actions? I already posted one before your post; is that all, or did it happen even earlier (like a kind of pre-surprise round or something)?
Revery |
Well we don't even know what we're dealing with yet. Only Sajeek does, and he hasn't posted yet after seeing them.
Gwendalyn |
Oh yeah. Never mind. (This has been facepalm week for me, and no I won't tell the other stories.)
Xenh |

You have all done an action. You and Maruusk had the advantage of posting after Sajeek, so you could act before I called for it.
The goblins will see you all in my next post.
Xenh |
I posted every day, or gave heads up when i couldn't.
/nod, and I appreciate you letting us know.
We're all slammed more often than not, so I am taking a moment to reward those that can carve out the time everyday to keep the game/energy flowing. It won't be the last award I give out, so if you have missed this one you might get the next : )
Xenh |
If you have ranks in spellcraft, this would be the time to add a roll.
Also if you ranks in pick locks....
Gwendalyn |
Wow, I had totally forgotten about the shackles.
Gwendalyn |
How far out did Gwendalyn get with that "max distance with no AoO" move action? All the way to the little wizard? Just five or ten feet out before getting stymied by the longspear's reach? Somewhere in-between the two riptide goblins and off to one side, due to swinging wide to avoid the longspear? I'm having trouble picturing the battlefield precisely.
Also, I'm really enjoying this character's versatility. She doesn't even have all of her different kind of spells yet, and she's already a front-liner, buffer, debuffer and healer. 8)
Also also, Syn was a bit of a mystery, but he had a great personality. He will be missed. :(

Sajeek leaned down in front of the cave to warn everyone of the approaching danger. He was charged and went fully defensive. So let's imagine that he stood up and gave himself a bit of space to maneuver (crouching is not conducive to avoiding charging psychopaths). The beastlord is squaring off against the human-sized female goblin a couple feet in front of the cave entrance.
Getting past the cave entrance is a move action and you've given it a move action, so you're now just on the outside of the cave ~20' from the goblin. You're still prone though, since it is another move action to stand.
Attack of opportunity-wise I moved her far enough back to give you cats a chance. A level 5 wizard and Co. was more than enough of a challenge for nearly naked level 1 characters : )
I'll get meaner as time progresses. So statements like, "I take a 5' step to bring the creature further from the others" will be gold.
Wow, I had totally forgotten about the shackles.
I was starting to wonder whether all of you had become the poster children for learned helplessness, or whether you were waiting for your rogue to wake.
As an aside, Joe AKA "Maruusk" is unable to keep up with the posting (as has become obvious in recent days) so he has gone the way of the dodo. I find it funny that I went by alpha and dice chose to make him the next victim of the wizard's 4D8 fire damage.
Also, I'm really enjoying this character's versatility. She doesn't even have all of her different kind of spells yet, and she's already a front-liner, buffer, debuffer and healer. 8)
Tis my rationale for feeling that EverQuest is the best game out there. Tactics and versatility are literally dripping from every character.

He made a good impromptu torch though : )

That's a shame. Not just because Gwendalyn buffed him, but also because I've become rather attached to her raftmates. :(

It's an awesome game, and I'm glad that you're running it! I loved the MMO very much, but I only lasted eight months. Every brain is different, and for me, a side effect of the operant conditioning was mounting depression. (And with each successive MMO, I lasted half as long as the one before, until I had one that I couldn't even unbox.) And yet I miss it. :)
ETA: I knew that Sajeek had an implied 5' step to attack after being charged with a longspear, but if I understand correctly, you also gave him and Maruusk undeclared tactical 5' steps before the charge. So, I can at least stand up and cast safely; but after that I'm looking at drawing an AoO if I try to move more than 5', yes?
ETA x2: Never mind, Sajeek forced my hand. ;)
Xenh |
Mistake Alert: I posted that the spear had struck Maruusk, but that doesn't make sense, since he's in the cave, it was the other vah shir Sajeek that was struck. Brain...bad.

Joe has been a littermate of mine for a number of years now. Not sure what's up with his inability to post (he's never been the most rabid of posters, though in spurts he has his moments) since he has been a consistent member of a number of groups I have been involved with. He is of course welcome back if things chill on his side and he can commit to the minimum posting plus a bit more.
I feel like I am the guardian of a tale that will span the ages, authored by each and every one of us, but at times the penning slows/stops and I must take action to increase the flow of lore.
ETA: I knew that Sajeek had an implied 5' step to attack after being charged with a longspear, but if I understand correctly, you also gave him and Maruusk undeclared tactical 5' steps before the charge.
Players normally get beaten to death for ignoring things I mention. Outside of that I try to keep things a bit more free flowing. That makes it is a bit difficult to grasp at times, so ask questions if you wonder how my strange mind sees things : )
So, I can at least stand up and cast safely; but after that I'm looking at drawing an AoO if I try to move more than 5', yes?
Stand and cast away, but you're right on the edge of the female goblin's threat range, so any movement will put you into her threat range.

Mistake Alert: I posted that the spear had struck Maruusk, but that doesn't make sense, since he's in the cave, it was the other vah shir Sajeek that was struck. Brain...bad.
But Maruusk actually moved out as the only other person to act on Sajeek's warning. I thought it was right. Also, did the spear-wielder save? :)
Xenh |
Maruusk actually moved out as the only other person to act on Sajeek's warning. I thought it was right.
Maruusk moved to the entrance and peered outside, suggestive that he remained inside.
He made a hide roll (a poor one) so I interpreted it as him fading into the shadows off to the side, since hiding in a 3' wide and 1' tall tunnel would be impossible. This has the nice side effect of him not clogging up the entrance with his furry ass.
Also, did the spear-wielder save? :)
I posted to resolve the AoO, since it was triggered by Sajeek's action, and might affect how other people act (healing/mourning the loss of another teammate). I haven't addressed any other actions yet as I am waiting for Quin's action to finish the PC's part of the round.
Gwendalyn |
Thank you for your patience with all of my questions, it's a little harder for me without a map. :)
Revery |
I feel your pain. truly.
Gwendalyn |
So what I'm hearing is that you're cool with Gwen naming the spell on a critical success, but that you'd like for the ones inside the cave to make a Spellcraft check before their Spot check, to see if it even occurs to them that when Gwen says "anywhere" she really means "anywhere", as in "maybe right next to you". But then, after this experience, they'll know what Fade means and won't have to do the Spellcraft check anymore. You put it very poetically, and while I enjoy your style very much, I also want to make sure that we understand precisely. ;)
Gwendalyn |
Hmm. I think maybe the elf was in Rivervale, and Tudan was busy apologizing for taking up the whole bank (even crouched down), while Gwen knocked boots with the smart wizard. Yes, that sounds more like it. 8)
Xenh |
I hope everyone is paying close attention to how much the dice want Maruusk dead:
- By alpha, it picks him as the wizard's next target (1 in 6 chance)
- Fade has two rolls: direction and distance. They're both random, but they perfectly place the goblin in the cave with the group.
- Listen checks go around, but the wizard's sneak exceeds all rolls (impressive considering that his skill is equal to one listen check, and just 1 point above another)
- Spot checks go out and though it's at worst a coin flip (DC 10), the two rolling have a +2 and +6, they are unable to find him. Maruusk gets a critical failure.
- Stabilization rolls go around and another critical failure, but this time on percentile.
I cow to the might of the Norns, that kitty needed to die lol.
I feel your pain. truly.
<offers up the DM reins to Mike>
<almost gets whiplash watching the little cockroach flee from the light>
That's right, run!
[mental note: kill Mike with a spork the next time he complains]
[mental note2: add Gwen to the "to kill" list the next time she complains]

- Anyone can name the spell as long as they beat the spellcraft DC I posted.
- Anyone can spot the hiding goblin with a successful spot check, as long as they are able to beat the DC 10 I posted.I gave them a wonderful excuse for failing their roll is all. Anyone that survives this encounter will learn the lesson of trusting the group even if it makes little sense.
The RSS (think it is the name) stopped working for me,i no longer saw new posts in IC thread, and now it is too late, i'm out to work. Will see to finish Quina's sheet later tonight.
Character generation might be in your near future, so that might be a moot point.
p.s. When I warn you that you are facing an enemy that's the most powerful and then make it obvious that he hits people with area of effect attacks, you know the area of effect attack is coming.
Revery |
The goblin is 25' from the entrance to the cave - is that the inside entrance or the outside entrance. I'm trying to figure out if I move to the outside entrance, will the wizard be in my spell range of 25'.
Xenh |

Inside entrance. He landed amongst those hiding behind the shelf and did a full 20' movement.
Might I suggest that "this foe is far beyond you" might be a time to consider stopping going toe-to-toe with him?
Up to you though :)
Gwendalyn |
Trust me, I'm considering it. ;) But Gwen is reluctant to leave her friends behind, and even if he cons tombstone red, in this system we can actually land spells on him. This is going to take some thought.
ETA: I'm assuming that we can all reach the inside entrance with a move action. If not, then never mind.
Gwendalyn |
Incidentally, I'm unwell and took the day off of work, which has the side effect of allowing me to post more than usual for a Monday.
Also, never mind about how far we can get into the cave. Revery is smart!
Revery |
Revery is smart. His puppeteer, on the other hand, may have been smart once but now he's not so sure; he does, however, have the experience to listen to the warnings of this GM in particular.

Some DMs/GMs/Guides carve out a world full of encounters specific to challenge the characters. I missed that day in guide school, so I just use the world (Darwin awards and all).
As an aside, what would you like your tombstone to say?
ETA: I'm assuming that we can all reach the inside entrance with a move action. If not, then never mind.
You can not only get inside with a single move action, but you will also be standing up at the end of your movement, since it ends with a sharp 3' rock shelf. Heck you could cast minor healing as part of your move since it's a free action.
Gwendalyn |
@Xenh: Message(s) received loud and clear!
@Revery: It took me some time to notice, but First Aid can be done as a move action (pg. 115), which I take to mean that you can do it twice. ;)
Xenh |
Might i suggest using appropriate encounters CR for the APL?
It is a fair comment, and is the way that every single DM I have played with has done it. They carve out a level specific little niche (wrap you in cotton and give you forehead kisses) for the neophyte players to take their fumbling steps and slowly come into their own.
A few comments about that:
- None of you are neophytes. EverQuest might be new to you, but roleplaying is not, and though it has a slightly different "skin"/UI it really is just v3.0 D&D for its core mechanics. Those that come to the realization that they have prompted the ire of a monster far beyond them and continue to swing (as opposed to running, hiding, using diplomacy, surrender, bluff, intimidate....) probably deserve to not have their genetic material move on to any progeny.
- I find it hard to suspend my disbelief that the world would fashion playpens for characters to grow up in. Give it enough time and the larger predators would cruise in for some easy game.
- It just wouldn't be EverQuest. The game is rife with insanely powerful creatures wending their way around noobie zones. As an example the Field of Bone is a horrific place to grow up in, with high level "KOS" (you will be killed on sight) monsters wandering around.
You have already had an encounter with a dragon, several killer sharks, heard testimonies from my players about how nuts I am, heard me tell you how horrible I am, and are currently penning posts in a game under the heading of "The Torture Chamber." It has been a constant barrage of potential drowning, exposure, shark bites, corral reefs, goblins (seriously, what sort of sociopath would attack their half-frozen/naked/nearly weaponless players at that point?), et cetera, et cetera.
YMMV, this is a feeling out process and if my way of running things is not for you then I fully understand the exit stage left. I have a very specific way of playing and some are in ecstasy within its boundaries (AKA masochists), while the normals shun it like a ebola-laced sneeze : )
Imagine how rewarding it will feel if you come out the other end of the meat grinder. You will be far from unscathed, but you will feel like you've earned it, since you had to fight tooth and nail for every inch.
Xenh |
Oh...<DING!>
Congratulations on surviving to Level 2 :)
As always your new level will take full effect upon the next in-game morning's light and after Mike/Revery has vetted your character sheet to be done to his +3 fine-toothed comb's satisfaction.
Keep in mind that casters do not suddenly get new spells with a new level. You must buy them or get trained in them from here on out.
p.s. Guide for how to ding? Here
p.p.s. Rolling for Syn's random attribute (since I haven't missed a day I don't think). Mommy needs a new pair of golden effreti boots! 1d6 ⇒ 6 (CHA). Here's Syn for your perusal Mike: Syn (Wood Elf Bard).
