Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Why not use the CC checkbox?

For your totals: Bluff, Diplomacy and Forgery are not magician class skills, so (as in 3.5) they cost twice as much. You need to use up two ranks to get 1 rank in one of those. I think those account for the extra six I counted.

Is there a way to get email notifications if a new posting has been made to a topic? Anyone know?

Please make an alias for the character you're playing in the game. That will hopefully eliminate confusion.

I'm sure everyone was going to anyway, but might as well make it explicit.

Michael New wrote:

(I'm not sure about this, because Revery has 5 ranks but a total bonus of +12 in Common - what is the total bonus good for? In the description, it talks more about Ranks than actual Language skill checks.)

Ranks are everything in terms of languages.

The total bonus won't be used, nor will any rolling be done by players for languages. I'll do it to speed things up a bit.

Fielding questions from my phone so this might get a little spammy with one post for each.

Danke for the character and don't worry about what you post in the Discussion thread, here is a scratchpad for whatever.

There is not and you can only post by coming to the boards.

It's a different animal, and might not be as optimal in certain aspects, but its a dream in some respects having an online die roller (rather than evildm spamming me), giving a perfect message log, eliminates signature/image spam, having a supported campaign section, but mainly it's the access to the massive player pool that's heady as a DM (gives options when a player needs to be found, especially for a game with such a small pool to choose from like EQ).

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Kalin: CC for skills means cross-class - please uncheck that for your class skills and check it for all others, and the sheet will then calculate your skill total correctly

Also, you have used 29 points in your point buy.

I can see a number of other things missing and wrong, so I'll just assume it's a work in progress and let you get to it :-)

There is an RSS feed (upper right corner). Personally I've never used RSS, but I've subscribed to this, and I'm going to give it a chance.

There must be an RSS -> email solution out there, so it might be a way to get post into your inbox, even if you need to go to this site to reply.

I'll let you know.

Got the cc thing, thanks. Point buy fixed. What else is missing or wrong?

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Okay, here's what I've noticed so far:
- Missing armor type and speed
- Hit dice should be a d8.
- Base saves not entered.
- I'm not sure, but I think you should have a O or D in front of it.
- Mana should be 2x4 or 8
- I think the GM would like to see more in terms of fluff (description, background, motivations).
- You need to list weapon and armor proficiencies
- You have 5 training points, or you might have used some of them; please record that.
- You might want to add Spell DCs in the field there; and also unarmed attack under your weapons (since it's your only one right now).

Also, I'm guessing you're aware you can put up to 4 ranks into a class skill and 2 into a non-class, but I thought I'd mention it anyways...

Really Simple Syndication <checks wikipedia> Nope, that's a common belief, but it's Rich Site Summary.

Normally you need a special 'reader' to follow RSS feeds; but the last thing I need is another reader. I may have a very easy solution - I'll let you know. (Actually, this message is also a test message!)

It is stupid (the CC box) to have to check the cross class skills, not that it is tiring of course, but why checking all the skills and un-checking the class ones? Logic might suggest the contrary.

For the skill points i should be ok now.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

I agree. On the Pathfinder sheets they fixed that.

Female Koada' Dal (High elf) Magician 1

This is Quinaweniel's avatar, damned difficult to find one suitable (and she is a half elf, not an elf but pathfinder elves have alien/fey pupils, not what you see in EQ elves).

OK, not sure about that first item, and gone about as far as I want to on the second item at this time.

Did not know this, and I've made some adjustments.

Thanks.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

I guess we all have different game expeiences. Skills in EQ are like 3.5 in many respects, and I tend to (wtongly?) assume most have played it...

Revery, any comments on Maruusk? I'm not a EverQuest expert, but I think that it is right. I did not spend the level 1 bonus points we receive - I'm saving them up...

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Did you read my earlier post about the sheet?? :-)

10:12 am today.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

As for the other Vah Shir (Sajeek), you spelled your race wrong on your sheet :-)

Also, you have 3 ranks in Animal Empathy, and 1 in Handle Animal, but you get 2 for one (max 4, though). So if you change those to 2 and 2, they'll bump up to 4 and 4. Not sure how you want to note that on your sheet - they could be under Misc Mod I guess.

You need fluff too, and enter your unarmed strike, especially since you have Hand to Hand (which will be handy as we're starting without weapons!).

Also, Training points please, and armor type 'none'.

Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress

As Fredrik is cutting his book free of its shipping wrappers, and others are considering character concepts, while Revery helps them to get their characters buttoned up (thanks again Mike, I appreciate the assistance), it's time to ask...

- What sort of game would you all like?
- Is there anything specific that you'd like to chase, experience, explore?
- Anything that's played, cliche, or you're just tired of seeing?

Here is your chance to potentially shape your gaming experience. I say "potentially" since I may or may not use it depending on the direction things take us.

One thing I push the games towards is heroic and larger than life characters making sacrifices for the greater good. There is an overabundance of evil and apathy in the world, so it's nice to have characters that care and are easily motivated to action. Not saying you have to like it (e.g. Han Solo), Hell grumble all you wish as long as you're active I'm happy.

p.s. Really button up your character's backstory. It's the skeleton of all of your choices and interactions. If you're unclear about the world, no worries, the motivation is still the same whether you're in Norrath, Golarion or Toril. Why did my character leave the farm/family/supports to engage in a high risk activity like <insert vocation here> that leads to adventuring? Glance at your stats and imagine what it would be like to grow up with those attribute scores? Muse on your alignment and diety, why those choices? Time spent here pays dividends later.

Revery wrote:

I kind of skipped over the 3.x era, except for some computer games. Just wasn't playing any PnP games at the time. I worked on my character last night until I couldn't stay awake any longer, and basically got stuck while trying to figure out the skills. After sleeping on it, re-reading it, and thinking about it some more, this is what I got:

The mechanical benefit of just 1 skill rank is eensy-weensy, unless the skill can only be used trained. So, with only 3 skill points per level, I should focus on just a few skills. Class skills. Ones that no one else would care as much about. But I still intend to spread out my starting skill points, grabbing some trained-only skills and establishing the character RP-wise. So that's what I'm in the middle of doing right now.

P.S. I'm on the fence about Taunt, since it looks to me like it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective as in the MMO. But given my unfamiliarity with the 3.5 skill system -- and the fact that I could be prejudiced by them explaining it with an example where it was a wasted action -- I figured I'd better ask if I'd be wrong to dismiss it. ;)

Male Mazinger-type Fan of Go Nagai level 38

I can see Fredrik doubts. The game lacks an "aggro system" like the MMO,apart from obvious relations between races and creatures from the bestiary.
As a general guide i should say the Taunt skill will work as written (no matter how much damage Quinaweniel's spells are inflicting on that orc,if Tudan's taunt is succesfull the orc WILL change target).

Skills: Done! I decided to stick with my old friend Taunt, since (if maxed) it would still have a real chance against an unwise creature that's smarter than a natural animal and hasn't attacked anyone else yet. And as Gandal pointed out, it has the advantage of *not* being overwritten by someone else's DPS. Working on feats now.

Sorry that I'm so far behind. It's normal for me to be slow at character creation, but I have Friday off -- four tens -- so I hope to catch up. :)

Edit: So here's my character sheet. Still very much a work in progress. Just wanted to show you the progress. ;)

FWIW, I'm just guessing about the Critical and Range for Slam. And I'm also letting the spreadsheet tell me about the Next Level XP. So, the Total Skill Points include the skill ranks for Barbarian and Common; and since Language is a cross-class skill, it adds up to an implicit extra 16 skill points.

Male Mazinger-type Fan of Go Nagai level 38

I think the spreadsheet uses 3,5 xp charts.
EQ requires 2000 xp for level 2, not 1000.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

For language, I just put the racial ranks under Misc Mod. That way they don't affect the skill point calculator of the sheet.

After a successful taunt the foe is yours for 1 round to play with. This is not a mind wipe of all the damage/slights done to it before, so after that round ends you better have given it a strong reason to remain affixed to your hip and not deep in your enchanter's thoracic cavity.

Tactics are important here. If you enter the battlefield, wearing nothing more than a wedding dress, it might not be a good idea to draw a great deal of attention to yourself :)

Taunt is an interesting skill since, to my rather limited knowledge, has no equivalent in the D&D/Pathfinder world (bluff permits potential openings in combat, diplomacy can make them like/trust you, and intimidate demoralizes them, which could actually make them less likely to attack you).

In the MMO, taunt was wonderful when it worked, but most of the time it didn't (spoken from the experience of an ex-endgame SK). It gives you an ability in a situation that normally you would have nothing you could do, and the squishies in your party will thank you for that.

It's a move action, so at lower levels (pre-full attack) you might be doing nothing with your moves anyway, and at higher levels your taunt might be decently high enough to be useful. Speaking of tactics, and knowing the 4 conditions that make the skill harder, I'd set myself up to use taunt before those come into play (especially when doing so makes them use their move action to get to you, rather than the other way around...a great way to stop them from being able to use full attacks at least for 1 round).

Taunt is special, it's like diplomacy turned on its head and from a roleplaying perspective it is comic gold. With this in mind know that I have been known to lower DCs for certain activities when people put real effort into their post.

Example 1:
Gandalf stares hard at his foe trying to intimidate them (Taunt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16).

Example 2:
"It is about time that someone explained to you why orcs are a race that is akin to something that one scrapes off its shoe <insert further insults here>...." Gandalf stands cool in the storm of emotion that roils about him, with a unreadable little smile on his face, begging for his foe to test his mettle (Taunt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21).

Yeah, that second one would have a lower DC. Hell if it makes me give you a standing ovation or break out busting a gut it might be an auto success.

p.s. If all of the above didn't convince you, it's great to start bar fights.

Worry not, we are in no huge rush, this is a contemplative time of laying in the sun and seeking out familiar shapes in the clouds.

Besides, if you had made a character before you had a book we would have burned you at the stake for being a witch :)

If the Myth-Weavers' Sheet is wanting a different experience total then erase it and replace the figure with the proper number.

I am still mulling on whether a 5% experience negative is sufficient for me to track experience, or just level everyone at times as has been my wont for nearly my entire roleplaying career of running games.

If I go the way I'm leaning (group experience) then you can simply put a dash in experience and next level experience.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

I just read Taunt and found an inconsistency. Under conditions for Sense Motive bonuses, it says, "(iii) if the target is above animal intelligence but cannot understand the taunter" and later says it's a +5 bonus.

Later on the same page, it gives an example of a Wolf that gets the bonus for being an animal, but it also gets bonus (iii) above (ignoring the "if the target is above animal intelligence" conditional).

I think the example is mistaken, but who am I?

Unless the example wolf is the poster child for dissociative identity disorder (one being a mensa wolf that only speaks Yiddish) I agree that the example gives one +5 too many.

It's an either or for the +5 bonuses and never both, unless I start throwing Monty Python ettin at you.

It's not ideal, but I do seem to be getting emails on every post. Trouble is, there's nothing but the thread title in the email title, and there's no indication in the email content who posted (though the text is there).

If you want to try it, here are my instructions:

- [One time only, perhaps optional??] Go to http://blogtrottr.com/signup/ and register. You'll get a confirmation email - follow the simple instructions.
- In your browser, go to the forum you want to subscribe to (such as this page).
- Right-click on the icon in the upper right corner of the page (it's orange hand has a dot with two waves coming from it) and copy the url. Chrome does this, and I'm sure other browsers do too.
- Go back to blogtrottr.com and log in. (or you might not have to log in)
- Paste the link address you copied, and type your email address, into the fields provided.
- Confirm the email they send you.

It's ugly, but it works.

There's also a bookmarklet which you can drag to your bookmarks. Then instead of the above, you just have to click the bookmarklet from any page (with that RSS symbol) you'd like to subscribe to.

What i PMd you was intended to be the background of Quinaweniel, as usually i think of the backstory of a char as the reason why he/she began adventuring.
As for her life before that i don't think there is need for something spectacular (Spiderman hahahahaaa...haem sorry);she was probably born in Felwithe in a good or above average family, maybe daughter of a jeweler or a magician or wizard or all of these things togheter.
I can think of her as a bit naive, maybe she felt safe in her family and always acted like nothing could touch her.
She could have spent entire days (or months for what matters to someone that at 120+ is still considered an adolescent) with her childhood friends talking about (what do elven young girls talk about?).
The story i PMd was meant to give you a plot hook to introduce her personal quest,or another quest to start the campaign; if you want i can dig into it more deeply (with names, exact events and so on) but have to write also my table game, and between that and my rl job i'm beginning to run out of time.

Even if you ask it to send the feeds realtime, they don't come that way. They tend to come in bursts. I don't know if that's because the Paizo website does that (it's my guess) or if it's the blogtrottr service. What I have found so far is that they do come fairly soon after the post, so it's good enough for me :-)

Ah. I just read the campaign tab in more detail, and I see that you're using group initiative. Have you considered block initiative? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it's tactically important for Tudan to be able to go before his opponents; and it doesn't have to slow the game down much.

What I'm picturing is that you'd roll everyone's initiative individually, and then lump them together according to whether or not there's an NPC in-between. Many thanks to the dice roller for a textbook example! 8)

Quinaweniel 17
Revery 13
Maruusk 10

Tudan, Kalin, and Sajeek could post their actions in any order, and they would be resolved in post order. Then you with the boss. Then Quinaweniel, Revery, and Maruusk in any order. Then you with the mooks. So it would take about twice as long as group initiative; but individual initiative would still matter. It would also still (mostly) work as written, including the effects of refocusing (which is new to me), delaying, and readying. What do you think? :)

Everyone (minus Tudan):
Grats on an additional +7 training points. You may use these special bonus points to buy a feat separate from any restrictions that might exist or save/spend them on whatever you wish (with the 5 starting points you could also raise an ability score).

This is my means of countering the barbarian's +5% experience deficit. You all progress at the same rate.

Tudan wrote:

I have used it in the past actually and ended up shifting to group initiative about 2 years ago, sacrificing some of the tabletop utility as a concession for speed, and have not looked back since.

I'll illustrate how the initiative works:

I roll everyone against everyone and the top roll from each side goes first. That tags that entire side to go together, and then I tag the other group to go. Since I am generally the most psychotic poster out there you're only ever waiting a day to post again (I try to post in the morning MST). Those that miss in a day get an OOC <nutkick> from me, unless they notified us that they would miss, and we move on skipping their action.

It's not perfect, but I once joined a PBP that was in its 6th month of the same combat, and there's no way I have the attention span for that.

As always, if there's any questions/statements/b&%#@es/complaints feel free to toss them my way.

Another feat or raise the INT to 20 (more mana and higher spell save DC)? decisions decisions !!!!!
Anyway no point in taking Combat Casting yet, with 4 HP i don't have to worry to have to check for channeling if i'm hit in combat (and at first level there are no pet summoning spells yet)

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Another feart would be great, but is it allowed? I thought we had to wait until third level before we could get a trained feat...

Everyone (minus Tudan):

Grats on an additional +7 training points. You may use these special bonus points to buy a feat separate from any restrictions that might exist or save/spend them on whatever you wish (with the 5 starting points you could also raise an ability score).

Think this means we can buy an extra feat (aside from level restriction)?

Not very clear to tell the truth.

Revery, please let me know when all characters are buttoned up, we have background/descriptions, et cetera.

Giving time for input on the game, should anyone have it.

- You may use these points to buy a feat.

- The purchase, using these points and only these points, of that feat is separate from any restrictions (e.g. Separate from the waiting for level 3 to buy your next feat).

Character Sheet -- Male Barbarian Warrior 1

Mostly, I just want it to feel like EQ. No arch-villain. Just some guys and gals wandering around. Maybe they work in pairs or triads to thin out the monsters in the countryside; maybe they all tackle a dungeon together; maybe they all split up to do some crafting. And then one of them stumbles across a quest.

For my sanity I am a fan of the party sticking together, since it does not double/triple my workload.

I like those ideas and it runs in concert with something Mike suggested (short adventures rather than prolonged intensive story arcs, as is my norm).

Good input!

I think most of them are done except for descriptions, backgrounds, and stuff. And spending those new training points. I am going to look over the feats and then decide, for Revery.

I will do a review of all the sheets again, perhaps tonight (it's Saturday night, but I don't have a night life), and post the comments in a single post. Then we can work from there...
