A few quick questions: Starting RotR soon. *Possible Spoilers*

Rise of the Runelords

Ok so I am about to start a new game of RotR anniversary edition. Im really stoked about it. I have seen the thread of homebrew player handouts and stuff... and it blows my mind how good some of them are... so thanks first of all to all the community. Now to my questions.

1. In the first Goblin Attack I was thinking about replacing a few of the goblins with Alchemist Goblins so they have bombs. This isn't to challenge the party, but to add to the chaos surrounding them. The description reminds me of the pirate attack in the first Pirates of the Caribbean when the pirates are throwing bombs into store front windows followed by explosions... it was pretty cool looking. I though having a few manic goblins running around throwing bombs into windows would be a cool addition. What do you think? Should I just give them alchemist fire instead? I suppose I dont have to actually change the combat and just have them be background bombers in the chaos. Thoughts?

2. Most of my players are new to Golarion. We have run most of our games out of Forgotten Realms. Is there a short description of the world or a handout that I should give them to give them a basic knowledge of the world they will be playing in? I know of the Player's Guide and the The Inner Sea World Guide, but the first doesn't give alot of info, and the second is just far too much. Im looking for something that gives a brief over arching synopsis of the world/gods/recent history. Is there anything like that?

Thanks for any help.

1. Careful of killing your fragile first level adventurers. Maybe give them some alchemist fire, but even then be careful.

2. The old players guide for the 3.5 version is still out there, still free and still relevent I believe.

1.Well I wasn't really thinking of using the alchemist against the party very much... maybe one. And I really like how the Module talks about how they get distracted easily... I might even have a goblin hit another goblin with a bomb lol. Really its more for affect and for laughs.

2. I will totally have to look at the 3.5 players guide. It being the first module for their world it probably has just what Im looking for. Thanks.

The 3.5 version of the Players Guide is a primer on Varisia. the background info is certainly still relevant fir the AE. The guide included some new equipment, and several new feats. Most of those feats have been re-worked as traits, so I wouldn't recommend using them. The stats of a lot of the equipment have changed for PF, though.

Revised PF stats, plus updated versions of much of the campaign material was published in the excellent Players Companion Varisia: Birthplace of Legends.

So is there a basic primer for Golarion as a whole?

Instead of an alchemist, I had a wagon of fireworks ready for the festival. Goblins loooooove fireworks. And that way the players can get in on the fun too or blow the whole thing sky-high.

But, as long as you're appropriately gobliny about it, adding an alchemist shouldn't be a problem at all.

If you're interested in fireworks, there are stats in We Be Goblins (which is free as a PDF and awesome in its own right).

As far as an introduction to Golarion, there's not really a player intro book. The god's section of the Inner Sea World Guide is important, but geography-wise you want to narrow down more. The setting's designed very well to be taken in bite-sized chunks, so I'd play to that strength.

Since it's your first game on Golarion, I'd suggest having everyone be from Varisia. As Haladir mentioned, the new Varisia companion is great.

Cheers!

That's the beauty of RotRL: it was originally an introduction to Golarion and Varisia. You could always just have your players learn things organically as the game progresses.

Yes, there is. I heartily recommend it, it's a great product for every player who doesn't ent o splurge on the hardcover.

Golarion goblins are Gremlins

Thanks. This was just what I was looking for.

I think alchemists are a bit to smart for the goblin tribes associated with the raid, but go with what you know. I sounds like you have a scene in your head you really wanna share with your group, id say do it, and alchemists fire does the trick pretty well. Maybe they stole it? but then, you don't really have to explain WHAT kind of bombs they are -or- where they got them. Just have them hucking them.

You should also give your players The ROTRL Players guide if you haven't already.
