The Best Way To Be A Magical Fencer

Advice

Sovereign Court

So, after crunching some math and realizing my planned PFS Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight should really just be a Magus, I'm setting about re-building him, since he's still first level.

I'm planning on using a rapier as a weapon, and Crane Style by level 5 to bolster my defenses, but I'm not sure where I want to go offensively.

Should I:

A) Go 12 Strength, 16 Dexterity, take Weapon Finesse at 1st level and pick up Arcane Strike at 5th,

or

B) Go 14 Str, 14 Dex, take Arcane Strike at 1st, and pick up Power Attack at 5th

or

C) Something I haven't considered yet? Dervish Dance looks neat, but I don't care for scimitars from a conceptual standpoint, and we all know how PFS is about reskinning.

Dervish dancer is a great option for magus, another weapon to look intowould be the aldori sword and feat tree although I think it requires 3 feats which you may not like so much. And as far as the stats go it all depends on what is more important to you, to hit or to damage, the magus ability to do weapon damage and touch spell damage doesn't really leave him hurting too much in the damage department IMHO and while using shocking grasp I believe you get a +3 to hit against anyone with metal armor, that will be your bread and butter for a while.

Scarab Sages

This is my level 4 PFS Magus.

He started with Weapon Finesse and Arcane Strike.

He's not min/maxed for damage, but is effective in a wide array of situations in and out of combat.

My big debate is what to do with him at level 5. Do I want to take dodge and combat casting? I could take Fast Learner and Additional Traits (Extremely Fashionable/Child of the Temple) turning myself into a true skill monkey. Or, I could take step up and following step just to mess with the DMs.

Step up and following step for the win, cast AND melee against the casters while keeping them on the defensive

to thread name: magus and arcane duelist (bard) were the first two to spring out at me.

upon actually reading your post i'd say: if ya wanna use a rapier, then use one. grab the agile enchant soon as you can and go nuts. tack on keen with your arcane pool to put more stabbity death enemy-ward. combat casting is always great.

also, are you even allowed to power attack with a rapier? or would you have to grab piranha strike instead?

Lantern Lodge

Human
Sorcerer 6/ Fighter 4/ Eldritch Knight 10

-Stats-
STR 10
DEX 17 (+5 leveling) = 22
CON 10
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA 15 (+2 Racial) = 17

-Feat / Level Progression-
01 S Weapon Finesse, Arcane Strike
02 S
03 S Dervish Dance
04 S
05 S Weapon Focus
06 S
07 F Combat Expertise, Combat Reflexes
08 E Improved Trip
09 E Greater Trip
10 E
11 E Weapon Specialization
12 E Improved Critical
13 E Critical Focus
14 E
15 E Greater Weapon Focus
16 E Tripping Strike
17 E Sickening Critical
18 F Greater Weapon Specialization
19 F Bleeding Critical
20 F Critical Mastery

Build is primarily martial with a bab of 17 and able to cast 7th level spells. When critting u can swift cast a spell that does not provoke an AoO, 2D6 stack-able bleed, give the sickened condition, and get a free trip off on the target along with normal crit damage. Weapon btw will crit on a 15+ on a d20 roll.

Playing a fencer has always interested me (I fence in real life) and I've statted up the Duelist prestige class a number of different ways -

Magus/Duelist
Ninja/Magus/Duelist
Ninja/Monk/Duelist
Fighter/Duelist

Any one of these except the Fighter could probably fufill the 'Magical Fencer' concept. Let me know if you are interested in any of these and up to what level and I'll post the stats.

You can power attack with a Rapier, just can't wield it with two hands.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm not too concerned about taking Duelist levels; I don't want to take the spellcasting hit.

Yeah; by RAW you actually can't Piranha Strike with a Rapier, you have to use Power Attack.

I'm with the above guy - get the agile enchantment ASAP and never look back.
