Dots not working?

Is anyone else having problems with 'Dots' vanishing?

I hit refresh and sometimes they reappear on some threads, not on others.

Other times I hit refresh and they refuse to reappear.

This is a relatively recent problem for me (last week or two it has gotten bad).

I've run into this problem quite a few times in the last week or two as well.

Same here, when I hit Focus, sometimes I only get a handful of threads showing up, most of which I've never even looked at.

Ooh ooh, I get those too. The weird single post threads that display "1 new post" in brackets? Yeah, those confound me.

It's weird for me too. I'm trying to run a couple of PBPs here, and sometimes the dots disappear, sometimes the entire threads go invisible. Is there some sort of trick that I am missing?

I agree that the dots and "x new" labels aren't as dependable as they used to be.

While I can't be certain, as I've only tested it on my own browser, but I think any Greasemonkey scripts you have set up for the Paizo forums (such as the Ignore script or the embedded image script) is interfering with the forums. I disabled all the Greasemonkey scrips, and I notice everything is suddenly running much better.

If any of you have scripts running, try disabling and see if it works then.

I have set no scripts up so any scripts that are running have been doing so for quite awhile. I do not know what Greasemonkey is. The problem is recent and I have not recently made changes. However, I will look at any scripts that might be running in the background.

Sovereign Court

It has nothing to do with Greasemonkey or scripts as far as I can tell from my investigations. See this thread for details-

I now believe that when a thread falls into the archives (which is increasingly easy to do as the page limit and the growing number of PbP's mean it happens more often) it both loses its dot as well as not showing updates on the campaign page.

Spoken to many people about this though, its not scripts related.

This is a whole different thing, AK. All one's dots in, say, the Online Gaming subforum disappear for a few minutes so if you try to Focus, you get an empty screen. Usually you'll still get (x new) on the threads you've read but haven't posted in. They'll generally pop back in 5 or 10 minutes or if you Focus and Defocus a few times. It's always happened occasionally, but I agree that it's happening more often than usual within the last 10 days or so: like, at least once every 24 hours.

Not using any scripts, fwiw. My browser is Chrome.

Greasemonkey allows you to modify existing pages with your own (or others') scripts. I used to have scripts that embed linked pictures so I could view without clicking on them, and it gave me an ignore function for posters I don't like.

Anyway, I disabled the Greasemonkey scrips, and now things 'seem' to be running fine, but that could just be a temporary reprieve.

I can't think of anything that a Greasemonkey script might do that would affect the dots or "x new" display. Those functions are handled server-side by a process that sometimes takes awhile to complete, so if they're not ready by the time the rest of the page is ready to send to the browser we'll skip them. I am working on a rewrite of our messageboards code right now that might help with that, but it's still at least a couple weeks away from being rolled out.

Well, that idea was debunked, dots and focus are back to not working again.

Thanks Gary Teter for responding. I will be patient. :)

Thanks for the response Gary. I see you`re hard at work as always. I have no doubt this will eventually be resolved since it seems you barely ever sleep. :)

Thanks for the response Gary

You know, I wouldn't have this problem in the first place if I didn't enjoy these forums so much....

Tels:

We wouldnt have this problem in the first place if computers did not exist, or if the internet did not exist, or if... hehehe

The weird thing (to me) is that the dots seem only to disappear from the Online Campaigns subforum. Right now, all the dots from that forum are gone for me, but dotted threads in the rest of the messageboards are sitting quite happily in my Focused view.

EDIT one minute later: And now they're back. This happens at least once a day. *shrug*

Not me, it applies to all sub-forums, they appear and disappear about every 5-15 minutes.

I loose all forums abetween once and three times a day. They also come back on their own at times and other times I just ignore the issue and they are back when I check back later the same day.

Side note for those trying to fix this: This happens regardless of the computer I am on or the network I am using on my side. Work, home, game store etc.

Right now, while on my cell, each time I clicked on a pbp thread that had a new post, and then went back to main, focused Online Campaign section, that thread was gone.

As I checked the last one and went back, it show zero games, all on focus mode.

Yeah, the (x new) works, but the dots don't. So if there are new posts in one of your threads, it will show up in Focus, but once you've read them, the thread disappears, as it's not dotted.

Yeah, I get it across every sub-forum. There doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern as to what threads dots are dropped from.

Yeah I just noticed the dots dropped off of my play by post discussion thread.

Dots disappeared from my pbp too.

Focus works sometimes, other times not.

Dark Archive

This still isn't fixed.

Yeah, the major rewrite that will affect the dots, focus and "x new" functionality is still in progress and hasn't been rolled out yet. Last night the site was even slower than normal (see here), which puts the dots even further behind than normal.

Thanks for the update Gary,

and I agree site speed is more a priority than dots, focus and "x New."

But, those be nice, too. Arr.

So.... dots still not working after the update. Anyone know why?

I don't think the update was to address the dot issue. I thought it had to do with back of house issues and speeding up the board. Maybe I misunderstood. In any case I agree, the dots still don't work all the time.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Last week's update added zero new features and fixed zero bugs. This week's update, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, is the big dots rewrite.

Oh, I know the update wasn't for the dots, I was just hoping the issue might have been solved along with everything else they did.

Um, what actually are dots and focus view?

EDIT ooh found them, learn something new everyday

...aaaaaaaaaaand Paizo.com/forums is transformed!

Why did no one tell me about these earlier! ;-)

What are you talking about?

Apparently mach1.9pants just discovered dots and focus view. *chuckles*

- Gauss

Yup :D

Oh, I thought there was something ELSE he discovered. What with the huge delay between those two posts and all.

And hopefully no new bugs get introduced.

Edit: It appears a few bugs exist in the online campaign section
Clicked on "X new" and it took me to an empty page.

And it looks like we have to re dot/view everything again.

Dots and x new will be wonky until later today.

For me, clicking on the new posts links takes me to the link, but it is not refreshing. When I go back to the Campaign Tab, the same set of "new" posts are still there even though I just read them. Seems as though the Campaign Tab is frozen in time from before the update.

Same here.

Click on the base thread (i.e. the title of thread) and not the "x new" and it'll do a reset for the number of new posts.

Edit:
I founds the "threads" section in everyone's profile is wiped clean.

Nope - no matter how I get to the thread, when I return to the Campaign tab, it still lists the same number of "new" posts even though I have been in and out several times.

There's a cleanup process that we have to run that will fix everybody's dots, "x new", threads created and a few other things. This process will take several hours to complete but before we start it I'm trying to track down a bug that didn't show up during testing.

I'll post again when we think dots, x new, etc. should be working properly.

I it worked for me.

do not enter threads through the campaigns tab

1)go to base message board
2)Click focus
3)Click on the thread's title (and nothing else)

and it should work.

Thank you for the quick response.
