Price of a partially depleted wand

Rules Questions

How does the cost of a wand change as charges are used? i.e.If a PC finds a wand of CMW with 19 charges remaining, what would that be worth?

It would costs 19/50 of a full wand of CMW.

Silver Crusade

Spell level x caster level x 15gp

Wand price = Spell Level x Caster Level x 15gp x charges remaining (to fix Malachi's formula).

So a normal CLW wand is 1 x 1 x 15g x 50 = 750g. A wand of knock with 23 charges is 3 x 5 x 15g x 25 = 5625g (half the price of a full level 3 wand, which is 11250g, because it has half the charges).

Yes!

Cure Moderate Wounds is a second level cleric spell, thus requiring caster level 3, so its price, with 19 charges left is:

2 x 3 x 15g x 19 = 1710g

It would costs 19/50 of a full wand of CMW.

It would be worth 19/100 of that price, since the OP is asking about selling such a wand.

Cheers! I meant 'per charge' of course! : )

This is the cost to buy the wand. Selling stuff isn't as efficient. The DM can set whatever rates he feels for that. The default view (and the only legal view for PFS play) is that you can sell stuff for half of it's cost.

By RAW I don't think you can sell or buy a partially charged wand. So it's really a GM call. I have allowed buying and selling of partially used wands in my campaigns before, and I use the suggestions above as a guide, but I also factor in things like scarcity, greed and price haggling to come up with a final price.

You also have to factor in how much of a reselling market there is. You can take the most valuable item you can imagine to Pawn Stars, but the likihood of reselling as well as how long it will take to resell will impact on the offering price, or whether an offer is made at all.

Also, when someone finds a wand in a treasure pile in my campaigns, it is rarely fully charged. Almost never in fact. In my worlds NPCs actually use magic.

Divide full price by 50. Multiple this value by charges.

Works everytime.

Example: CLW, caster 1, 750/50 = 15 gp per charge.

CMW, caster 3, 4500/50 = 90 gp per charge.

19 x90 = 1, 710 gp. If you sell: 855 gp.

Partially charged wands have listed costs, what RAW are you speaking to?

If you get a decimal point on the cost round down like you do for everything. In all the Paizo APs I've read there are both opportunities to sell partially charged wands and "vendors" selling them.

The rules for costing on magical items can be extrapolated down based off missing charges.

Hell in PFS there is at least one partially charged magic item on the majority of the Chronicle sheets.

Assuming the charges are what create the value of the wand, here's another way to do it.

19 charges remaining out of 50.

That's a reduction of 31 charges.

31/50 (31 divided by 50) gives you 0.62, or a 62% reduction in value.

Wands can't be created at less than 50 charges but they can be found.
And sometimes the only sensible way to go about it is to sell it, because it's a spell you'd never need (or that you know and would never cast from a wand).

In my games I allow partial charged wands of certain spells, if it makes sense.
If you go to the local temple and ask them if they have a used CLW wand, they might actually have one they've been using to heal the sick. Since they probably have others in reserve, they might be willing to part with the partial one for a little markup (I calculate prices as one or two charges more), especially if the party either just did something to help the town or need it for a mission to help the town or something.

Going to the local magic shop and looking for the same thing might not yield the same results.

Depends on the store. Especially if it's a catch-all store, they would very likely have at the least a used wand bin for such wands, and the more common spells would likely be represented on a fairly regular basis.
