Encounters: Anyone did a head count?

Rise of the Runelords

Hey everyone!

I wonder: Did anyone of you ever looked through all 6 books (or better the AE) and counted the NUMBER and TYPE of the creatures to be fought?

I'm just wondering:
Carrion Crown is Undead heavy, but what is RotRL (if anything)?

If it isn't done yet, maybe someone is interested in doing it or splitting the work load (i.e. one book per person), though I guess there aren't THAT many encounters in each.

I guess I'll start doing that as soon as I have the time, but if it's already done, I would only waste my time.

Thanks for reading and have a nice weekend.

My guess from running through two and a bit chapters is that it is very humanoid heavy with humanoid (Giant) being very prevalent.

That's just an impression though. I'd be intrigued to see how this comes out.

Hey awesome, thanks HF!

Are those from the seperate books or the AE?
(I guess AE)

Now I only have to put the types to those names.

BTW: Where did you get them?

Hate to rain on parades, but that list isn't completely perfect. There are 9 goblin dogs in burnt offerings for example, and you only list 5 of them. Unless of course you're using the original RotRL, in which case you may be correct. I'm going based on the Anniversary edition.

I'm listing the number involved in any ONE encounter, not TOTAL in the adventure path. That's not to say I flubbed something up somewhere, but as far as Goblin Dogs are concerned, there are only 4 found in any one encounter.

EDIT: this is out of the AE.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize you were doing it that way. In that case, I've compiled a list of all the enemy types in the entire AP, as well as enemy types for each individual adventure (sorted by frequency, with humanoids and outsiders split into subtypes as-per the ranger's favored enemy list):

(AE used for this list, likely non-enemies such as Ameiko, Shalelu, or random townsfolk not included. Some enemies, including most outsiders, skew the list to appear to be multiple enemies by appearing in multiple categories)

Nice lists!

By the way, if someone wants to know the total number of Outsiders, it should be as simple as adding Outsider (extraplanar) to Outsider (native). I can't recall any outsiders that have neither type.

(now do similar lists for the other APs! :P)

There are 4 outsiders in RotRL that are neither native, nor extraplanar (The 4 water mephits in the Vault of Greed in Sins of the Saviors).

Therefore the total number of outsiders in RotRL is 71.

I can do a similar list for Jade Regent (given enough time) and Skull and Shackles (once I get book 6), but I don't own the other APs yet.

Good list.

So if I'm making recommendations for favored enemy, it looks like I should suggest giant, undead, evil outsider, and human. Goblinoids are over with too quickly.

Good to know, thanks.

Correct. Goblinoid is a decent one for players to take as their 1st level favoured enemy (especially newer players, as it'll lessen the difficulty a bit), but it's not one you're going to want to increase past 1st level.

The only other 1st level ones that are particularly useful will be animal or undead (undead being the better choice). Giant isn't really going to be useful until a ranger gets their 10th level favoured enemy (or perhaps the 5th level one for a multiclass ranger).

Humans come up most-often in the late books, with big-name villains like Karzoug and Khalib, as well as most of the masters of Runeforge being obvious targets. Monstrous Humanoid is also a good choice for one's 4th favoured enemy.

How I wound take my own favoured enemy progression, personally:

1st level:
- Humanoid (Goblinoid) +2
5th level:
- Humanoid (Goblinoid) +2
- Undead +4
10th level:
- Humanoid (Goblinoid) +2
- Undead +4
- Humanoid (Giant) +4
15th level
- Humanoid (Goblinoid) +2
- Undead +4
- Humanoid (Giant) +4
- Either Humanoid (Human) +4, Outsider (Evil) +4, or Monstrous Humanoid +4

My 15th level choice would be based on what the party's been having trouble dealing with so far, with human as my default choice. For example a party with a paladin probably doesn't need me to take evil outsiders as my 4th favoured enemy.

I was redirected here from the Advice thread. Does anyone have any idea which of these have had a mini produced? (Pre-painted plastic by preference, but unpainted plastic or pewter in a pinch - I can paint, I just don't like to.) Or if no specific mini has been produced of the creature / character in question, can anyone recommend a good stand in?

Thank You.

Well, you always have paper minis as an option (and these include EVERYTHING - at least, they will once they've been updated to the AE):

Burnt Offerings
Sandpoint Citizens

My ranger player took the giant hunter trait (or whatever it's called) from the player's guide. So that' like a +1 boost to favored enemy right there. I warned him off taking giant right away, suggesting goblinoid as great in the beginning then useless, or undead as slightly useful in the beginning but more useful throughout. He picked undead.

On a related note, does the ranger or another party member have to pass a knowledge check to identify a strange creature as an e.g. evil outsider before his favored enemy bonus takes effect?

No, they don't need to identify it, to my knowledge.

I think there's been debate over that issue though. Some camps believe favored enemy shouldn't be a "free identification" in addition to its other effects, others argue that it should be, as if the ranger favors such enemies he likely knows how to recognize them by type.

Best to just run whichever you prefer, and if you choose to require knowledge checks, make sure your player is aware of that in advance.
