It would be awesome if it were possible to ally with NPC Monsters. For instance, let say you discovered a nest of bugbears in a rival settlements hex. Rather than wanting to destroy them, it would be advantageous if you could supply arms, training and maybe even man-power to them. If it was possible for you to be flagged as an ally to the monsters then this could allow you to walk around unharmed in their territory, perhaps with restricted access to sensitive areas. If you were allowed access to an ‘armoury’ then you could buy weapons and armour and deposit it in their armour, which may increase the effectiveness and growth of the monsters.
It would also be fun if an enterprising merchant could sell equipment to a nest of monsters, or for others to actively serve the more powerful monsters (dragons, Lich’s etc).

I would love to see a merchant character running around, looking for those bands of humanoid monsters that set up camps in a hex, supplying them with better weapons and armor, and getting the heroes or settlements in that hex completely screwed over by the newly powerful monsters.
Get people working together by boosting the threat beyond what it would normally start out as.

This is brilliant OP: Reminds me of geopolitics: Selling arms/"military advisors" to insurgents etc. The art of war stuff through and through.
Totally agree. One of my first thoughts when I was reading about merchant characters interacting with player created nations/kingdoms was "I COULD BE THAT JERK THAT SELLS TO BOTH SIDES!"

What would be even more brilliant is if some of the starting races were low level monster races such as goblins and hobgoblins. The players could try to start their own Goblin empire. It would also be so funny if the ‘monsters’ founded a settlement, and then had to deal with NPC bands of elves (or other normal) races trying to setup shop in their hex.
If players were given the option to have ‘monstrous’ characters then I’m sure a group would be quickly formed to try and give it a go. I certainly would be keen on playing a goblin or hobgoblin if given the chance.

So many thought about how this is such an awesome way to hide a company of assassins...
Thats racial profiling to assume that goblin and hobgoblin would make suitable assassins. And what's with the terminology of calling other sentient creatures 'monsters'! Were we not created equal to the other 'civilised' races! If you cut us do we not bleed! Arise my children and let us herald in a new age for goblin-kind. Arise and witness the rebirth of the empire of Zog.

What are you talking about? Perhaps a review of the definition of the word "assume" is in order?
You've gotten some very specific conclusions/interpretations about specific races and assumptions about those races out of a very vague comment that made absolutely no mention or reference to said races. You are clearly suffering from a racial inferiority complex. You're the one who started calling goblinoids "monsters". With that kind of deductive and observational skills the empire of Zog is not off to a healthy start.

Well, no one ever accused goblins of being intelligent. ;-)
:) Actually Blaeringr makes a fair point. I mixed my OOC post with an IC rant from the point of view of a goblin zealot. Don't tell Blaeringr he was right though. It'll go straight to his head.
It would be fun to play a goblin civil rights campaigner though.

It could be interesting. I'm simultaneously intrigued and wary of PC monsters, but the rest of this would open up options for use of the Diplomacy skill. ^^
It could even be fairly simple to implement. AoE, centered on the user. Success improves your standing with them (from hostile to neutral). Using it on evil races adds points to the evil side of the alignment axis (no change for neutral races, possibly good points for good), and if you use the opportunity to get the drop on them in combat then you gain points to chaotic (and evil if attacking neutral or good races) and a healthy plummet to your reputation with that faction, making it much more difficult (and impossible within a certain period of time) to repeat the trick on either the same or related groups of mobs.

Another option is to allow players to create PC's from some of the less powerful monsters (goblins, hobgoblins orc etc) and let them create their own communities/lairs. Therefore instead of dealing with NPC's you deal with PC's. Personally I'd love to see both options implemented at some stage.
@L.A Dubois. I like your suggestions. It reminds me of an amulet that a PC of mine found (in a NWN PW) that made low level undead creatures non-hostile. It was great fun to visit a hostile cemetary and hide out. In particular i like your suggestion of allying with NPC monsters has a gradual effect on alignment and prossibly reputation.
