How many figures can you make for 3 million dollars?..I just saw the Kick starter total..

Hi Bryan, glad you're on! The breastplate is fine to me, although the lack of any thigh/leg protection does sort of place it in the gratuitous vs. functional armor for my tastes. As I noted earlier, my primary qualms with the sculpt are with the garter and the pose (it looks strained/unnatural as a conversation pose). Can you speak any to those?

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Bryan Stiltz wrote:

It is a breastplate. She's not naked. It's meant to evoke Grecian imagery, as it traditional with Cloud Giants. Cloud giants are traditionally in Grecian inspired attire, are beautiful (especially compared to their more brutish Giant cousins) and are not automatically hostile to humans. Thus, she's meant to be beautiful, have grecian-influenced style of dress, and a non-combat pose.

It's not a political statement, or an attempt to dehumanize anybody. It's an attempt to create a model that fits the descriptions found in classic RPG literature.

And it nails it beautifully. Everyone involved with this miniature should be pretty damned proud of themselves no matter what anyone says. It is a freaking work of art, imo.

Here is our studio paintjob, for reference.

Wow.

I think the colored picture shows the detail (and what is or isn't skin) wonderfully.

Now I'm truly depressed - I'm never going to be able to do this mini (maxi?) justice.

Maybe I'll be better off just leaving it unpainted and imagine that I've painted it perfectly...

Reggie.

Gorgeous paint job. Makes it easier to see the details of the sculpt as well--especially since we can get a 360 view.

Cloud Giantess? I was promised a Storm Giantess!

I'm fine either way.

You could always paint her with dark skin and white hair.

...

now actually does want a Storm Giant mini based on Asgardian Storm

Tina Turner called, she'd like her 80's look back. - awesome movie franchise too, as an aside. She played Aunty Entity really well.

Check the cover in This preview. Except for the face, I'm shooting for this.

As Sean stated, she's intended to be both conversing with 1" tall PC figures, thus leaning over, and at the same time, suggesting menace - The "larger than a PC mace" clearly visible, a direct threat against violence towards her. Cloud Giants are NG/NE, so she's not an automatic combatant.

The garter was added by the artist as a decorative piece, and the figure was designed to be drop-dead gorgeous and well onramented, as she is intended to portray a creature that is described as such:

"Cloud giants can live to be 400 years old, and dress in the finest clothing and jewelry available. To many, appearance indicates station. The better the clothes and the finer the jewelry, the more important the wearer."

Jewelry, including golden garters, are part of this, as interpreted by our artists.

Your tastes may vary. Clearly on our forums this figure has been the subject of some controversy and debate over the appropriate depiction of females in fantasy art. If you have similar objections, rather than politicize this thread, I would be happy to discuss alternatives, such as how to help you not possess this figure in your rewards, via e-mail (I rarely log in so PM is slow). bryan@reapermini.com

Disclaimer: what follows is not an attempt to be political nor is a judgment of others' personal aesthetic preferences, which I accept may be different from mine.

Based on my own personal preferences, which all and sundry are welcome and even encouraged to disagree with, I am still planning to do some mild conversion on my figure when I receive it, which will largely be to add some additional cloth to her chiton (mostly so she doesn't look like she has to bikini wax ;) ). If anyone wants to see an in progress posting of that project when it occurs (whenever the model arrives and I have time to do so), let me know so I can remember to take pics. If no interest, I will not be offended. :)

In other news, the new greens for the snake-person and the elementals look really freaking amazing. I really love the elementals especially... trying to imagine how on earth that was sculpted...

DeathQuaker - I would love to see the project! I think that modeling and modification is a part of the hobby, and am always excited to see the interpretations and inspirations of hobbyists and gamers!

True! It's my favorite aspect of the Hobby!

Thanks Bryan. I hope from my previous comments it's obvious I'm not anti-Reaper or looking to make a political statement so much as looking into the thinking behind this particular mini.

Well, now I'm gonna be all nervous. ;)

I need to find modding parts! THe snakeman green mold, where did the sculptor get those swords?

Scarab Sages Reaper Miniatures

@DeathQuaker: No worries - I'm a professional maker of minis, not a pro-level sculptor! My stuff's as homemade looking as anybody's!

@CthulhuDarren: I don't know. Julie has a large variety of parts through the years to choose from, and even sometimes makes her own by filing down existing weapons. I'll ask.

@CthuluDarren:

From Julie Guthrie:
"We made the swords out of sheet aluminum specifically for the miniature, so they are not commercially avaiable. Maybe down the road Reaper will include them in a weapons pack. "

Dark Archive

I love modding miniatures – it was very fun taking Reapers Eyebeast and converting it into an Eye of the Deep using their pincer components from their Creature components set. Had to crop off most of it’s smaller eyestalks (left the largest of the two), used the green stuff to mold some arms and then attached the pincers to the end.

At the time I couldn't find an appropriate Eye of the Deep mini (Otherworld has since made one), so necessity pushed me create it. If I can find a way to post the pic I will host it up. It was a fun project, and my players love the mini.

CthulhuDarren - follow the creature components link I just posted to the Reaper mini site - they have a few other modding accessory blisters they offer - all pretty damn good (have had to buy multiple sets of these).

I've been supercharged by thesis-avoidance-rays.

The new sculpts look terrific.
