From that pile of unpainted minis I posted earlier in this thread, I finally started to get around to painting those plastic Hero Quest minis. I've made a small dent in them so far. I decided to use the dip method for them too. I experimented with two different dips (light and dark) and two different primers (white and black) to see how they worked together and which gave the better end result. WARNING: This is my very first attempt at the dip method.

The "trick" to getting good dipped miniatures is to keep the colours fairly bright, that'll produce a better result as the dip will dull the colours a bit. So a bright red will produce a mid-tone red after the dip.

I've recently started painting again and as of yesterday it's one of my 3 main focus areas for the next 3 months (at least - the other two being healthy food and exercise).
This mini was actually started more than 15 years ago (the skin, books and the scrolls) and I've painted the rest a couple of weeks ago.
The mini is an old Games Workshop mini and I wish I had more of it, I'd love to paint it up in several other colours - the nose has had a brush with a hard surface at one point in history, which is why it looks so flat.
This dwarf is also an old GW mini. It isn't really a fair representation of its current state, since I've decided to do all the metals in NMM (Non Metallic Metal) and I've worked on that since then + made some more progress (skin, leather parts). I'm waiting for some good paints for the NMM parts, but because of the combination of a burned down post office in France and the guy running the store where I've bought them, they won't get here until late April (long story...), so the dwarf is on hiatus until then.
This ogre is also an old GW mini (I love the old GW ogres and I have several more of them). He's my current project and I've only done the skin so far (except on the feet). With my current focus on painting minis I hope to have him finished soon.

All of the above pics are quick photos taken with my phone, which makes the contrasts/blends stand out a lot more than in real life. Once I've finished some more I'll take more pictures with proper lighting.

Yup, I did my research before hand and knew that. I just really wanted to see the results of different methods for myself rather than just read about them and see other peoples pics. Maybe I'm strange that way, but I like being hands on, even if it means making my own errs (even intentionally to see exactly what and how things go wrong to better avoid them in the future) along the way. Though I still did paint those hero quest mini's with bright colors (brighter than I normally paint minis at least). I'm still shaking my fist at my camera for tinting everything more green than they actually are. :p

That (the fact that I prefer to paint my minis dark and gritty) is also one reason I haven't replied much to other peoples posts. I like what I like, and feel that the way most people paint minis looks "overly cartoon-y" for my personal tastes. Bright, solid colors with some highlights and shadows, sometimes with a dark outline to accentuate the contrast between areas and make them pop, etc. It's just not my style. I don't want to come across as a jerk or a naysayer putting down other peoples work which - while not appealing to me - are still quality works.

(but if someone does peruse my website, I should warn that many of the minis posted there were painted years ago. Like 20-ish years and were some of my first minis... and as such there are some absolutely terrible paint jobs there)

I do hope that the minis I've done recently (and posted above) do a good job of showing dark and gritty while still being quality paint jobs.

You're three current works, for example, look like quality work! It also looks like you have a style that I don't subscribe to. Though it may be your phone-camera, as you did say it upped the contrast more than it should have (much like my camera making my dips too green).

Anyways, happy painting!

That guy with the scrolls is brilliant, I find whites so difficult... really impressed.

Thanks! The robes were just done with Vallejo Game Color - Wolf Grey and then highlighted with white (Game Color White Primer in this case since I got better coverage with that than my other white).

Great looking paintjobs everyone! I've been busy with my Warhammer 40k minis, and after the tenth space marine I really hope my Bones would arrive soon... Just for a little change =). Anyway, here are few pictures of them

Ouch, those are gorgeous!

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 14
Starting off with Marda of the Blade, from Reaper Miniatures. I've had this one painted up previously but for some reason (can't remember which) I decided to strip the paint a while ago. She's been sitting on the shelf ever since but now she's back in color. I really enjoy the mini but it was kinda hard to paint, with a few small spaces outside easy reach. She's also supposed to have a sheat for her sword but I've misplaced it somewhere. If I find it I will most likely paint it up and attach it.

All and all I think she worked out OK.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Secondly we have Hatherley from Hasslefree Miniatures. Another great dwarf sculpt from Hasslefree, which was indeed hasslefree to work with. I tried to give him a red booze nose, and I think I succeeded.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Seems I'm on a roll since I managed to finish another of the Hasslefree dwarves. I think it's the last one I have. Always nice to cross something off the list. It's Grimdalf, which I'm very happy with. Especially since he didn't take that long to finish. I could have worked more on the cloak but it's ok the way it is.

He can be seen here standing up against some ancient evil in a dungeon.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Looking great! Especially loving the red booze nose on the dwarf =).

Just finished prep on a trio of Ork Killa Kanz (primered, assembled and highly magnetized). Ready to paint. Also ready to paint a Malifeaux Gunsmith, Konrad Borislav from Urban War, four Reaper Chronoscopes (Candy, Anime Heroine - already painted and sold two of those - Belle, Steampunk Heroine, Andre Durand, Time Chaser, P.B. Pugh, Pulp Hero), and a Chaos Space Marine Chaos Lord from the Dark Vengeance box.

Yes. I shall be busy this week.

Hope you post some pics once finished. Especially that Chaos lord, it's a great sculpt!

Pirates, pirates and more pirates - now and forever, it seems. ;D

I'm running Skull & Shackles for our group, and I'm working on my last group of 10 pirate crew to add to the 58 already-finished figures I've done for the NPC crew, Rahadoumi crew, zombie pirates, and figs for most of the encounters through Book 2.

Once these guys are completed I'll begin finishing a 25mm pirate ship model

Spoiler:
that will become the Man's Promise after my PCs have her "squibbed" at Rickety's.

I've wanted to do a large-scale sailing ship for a long time, so I'm looking forward to getting down to the final modeling and painting on that part of the project. Right now I have the hull 80% painted and have collected the parts for the rest of the ship - now I just have to build the %$#&!! thing! ;D

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 15
As the week creeping to an end I realised that all the minis I was working on was either to far off completion to finish in time or in need of a base. So I grabbed a simple mini at random that I would be able to complete in time.

The result is Diedra Dark Willow, from Reaper Miniatures. I'm happy with the way she turned out, but I can't help to be abit bummed because I think a good painter would be able to make her face stand out more. Give it more character. But that's a minor complaint and if I ever get to run a Savage World of Solomon Kane game this mini will come in handy.

Silver Crusade

My Reaper bones kickstarter order arrived last week with 240 minis. I have no idea how to paint, so I ordered one of their "Learn to Paint Kits", which should arrive in a day or two. I should have time to get started this weekend. There are 12 giant rats in the kickstarter pack, so I figure I can afford to ruin 3 or 4 of them with bad paint jobs while learning, so that's probably where I'll start.

Last week I also finished 5 quickdips that hadn't dried enough to matt seal and take a photo, but now they have!

Two celtic warriors from Warlord Games
Two Darktalon Champions, WotC DDM
One Greyhawk City Militia Sergant, WotC DDM

The learn to paint kit also comes with some minis that it takes you step by step through how to replicate the paint job presented I think

Sovereign Court

The learn to paint kits are a fantastic value - the description lists them as having tiny little samples. They don't have samples, they have full bottles of paint.

Apparently the company that sells the strips of sample paint pots charges more than a regular pot of paint, so they switched over to full bottles.

If you don't have paints already, the LTPKs are probably the best way to grab some common colours for below msrp.

Edit - the LTPKs from reaper directly that is. Old ones in LFGSs may still have the paint strips.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 16
Took the opportunity this week to finish two miniatures that had been waiting around half painted for some time, and a quick paintjob on the Wendingo from Wyrd Games.

* Aurelius the Adept, from Red Box Games - I made a couple of tries to get the orb on the staff to look good, but couldn’t quite manage. Eventually I had to settle for making it wholly black.
Picture 1, Picture 2

* Female Amazon, from Dark Sword Miniatures - I’m kind of happy with the flesh on this miniature, but it could be much better. It’s a step in the right direction.
Picture 1, Picture 2

* Wendingo, from Wyrd Games - This was a really quick paintjob. I think it might have been about 30 minutes from start to finish. I was planning to have it pained grey, and I have no idea what flew into me and painted it blue.
Picture 1, Picture 2

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 17
Finishing the month off with Ymir the White, from Red Box Games. I had hoped to get more work done but this was the only one I was able to finish. Onward to next month!

Picture 1, Picture 2

I was also able to finish three Beastmen Gor Warhammer figures, but they need to be quickdipped, so no pictures of them at this time.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 18
Starting out the month with more of a “at least it’s finished” than “oh, that’s nice” kind of paint job. It’s the Strumpet miniature from Hasslefree. I have a few more that I will probably finish (or at least come close to finish), but not in time to take a decent picture.

* Strumpet, from Hasslefree Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2

Left overs that I finished last week, but quickdipped and photographed this week
* Beastmen Gor, from Games Workshop
Leader, Grunts, Beserkers

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 19
Got to finish the last of my villagers from Hasslefree. I’m kind of happy with the barwench but with the barman, not so much. He was a rushjob since I felt stuck and wanted to finish one more miniature before the week ended.

A nice thing is that the Barwench was photographed after it got varnished with Pledge+Army Painter Anti-shine. That was impossible for me to achive with my previous varnishing method of drowning the minis in Vallejo gloss+matt varnish.

* Barwench, from Hasslefree Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Barman, from Hasslefree Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 20
Two old miniatures this week, Goblins from Granadier (I think). They where kind of frail and broke a number of times when I removed them from their base, so their feet doesn't look all that great.

* Goblins, from Granadier Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 21
This week brings Sana from Hasslefree Miniatures. No matter how much time I think I give myself at the start of the week I always end up rushing in the end. Still happy with the result, although I feel that the face is better sculpted than I painted it.

I've just finished my first mini, though it seems a bit below average for this thread :)
I picked up a few reaper metal mini's to get some practice in before my bones kickstarter arrives (my FLGS did not have any bones.) Decided I'd start with Ezren!

The filigree / hem line stitching could have gone better. The left eye is horrible, which is why it's turned away, but the right eye is barely acceptable. Generally made some poor decisions on color choice throughout the whole thing. Didn't do any advanced shading, though the hair could really use some.

Overall, not as bad as I thought I was doing during the process; an acceptable mini for playing with, though nowhere near a showpiece.

Then I googled up the same mini and found it done much better :( Practice, practice...

RedEric wrote:

Using some washes and dry brushing for highlighting can really accent the appearance of a mini. Of course this doubles the amount of time painting the mini though.

Sczarni

yeah... it can be tough... if you look at older minis in the reaper line and search on their product numbers, there are a fair number of step by steps that some people take/took.... Thats how I learned some tricks

I'm sprucing up some old critters I've had in the bits box for way too long. Here's a Manticore for starters.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 23
I missed week 22 due to my designated “painting time” got booked. Shortly after I did manage to get one miniature finished though.

And this week I’ve mostly been out with a cold that sapped my motivation to get pretty much anything done, so this one was a struggle. The cold is gone now though, so I hope to get more done during the remaining two weeks of june.

Good to hear that I have an audience :) Although this weeks delivery might have to be canceled. My weekend is booked so I will have to finish a miniture by tomorrow (or perhaps wensday) it will be another missed week. Hopefully it won't have to come to that :)

I need to get back to painting. I was enthusiastic to learn how to paint and get started when my Reaper Bones Kickstarter showed up, but I got frustrated with how long it took to paint my first two minis. But I have so many waiting to be painted now, many of which I'm using unpainted in the mean time.

I won't be able to paint anything this weekend so I had to try and speed things up during the week in order to get anything done. The result is Ferrus from Hasslefree Miniatures. Not the best quality pictures though.

So for the first time since I restarted painting miniatures a few years ago my unpainted pile is actually shrinking \o/

It won’t last though with the Reaper mega box, RBG KS #1 and #2 and the Otherworld Miniatures Indiegogo Campaign incoming...

I just got my latest miniatures order (though I still have several unpainted minis, both primed and unprimed.) ^_^;

Anyway, I got the new minis for some encounters/NPCs for Way of the Wicked, which I'm currently running. I've put them on slotta bases, and will likely prime them later today and start painting them tomorrow.

3 Reaper Bones Ghosts for Wraith spawn.

1 Red Mantis Assassin for when the Drow Rogue gets high enough level to take the PrC.

If you're feeling a little adventurous I'd say give it a shot with some washes. Especially the minotaur is really going to pop with a wash applied.

Slowly starting up the project again after a two week absence. Only the one miniature finished this week. I’ll have to quicken the pace for next week since wave one of the Otherworld Miniatures Indiegogo campaign arrived when I was away. 48 unique figures (counting familiars, treasure loot miniatures, henchmen and character miniatures). Hopefully I have some of those finished until next week.
