Patrik's miniature painting project 2013, week 03
I got unexpectantly invited to my brothers house this weekend so my mini painting plans got somewhat scewed. Although this post is a day to late I'm happy to say that I managed to keep my goal of mini completion last week.

This week my completed metal mini is Black Armand, from Red Box Games.
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Because of my selfimposed timelimit I was somewhat pressed to complete the mini, which resulted in a bit of a rushed finish. Although I'm kinda pleased with how he turned out.

I also managed to finish some quick dips:

Four quicklings and Artemis Entereri

And lastly the previous weeks dips that hadn't dried in time.

The wolfman from the Descent board game and two diseased dire rats

Patrik's miniature painting project 2013, week 03
Managed to finish two miniatures this week so I'm closing in on the "miniatures per week" ratio I wish to achieve. As a bonus I'm also quite happy with how these two worked out.

Firstly, we have Shadowblade Revyiande from Red Box Games.
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Secondly we have Corim the Krestel from Reaper
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Lastly I finished four quickdips. A foulspawn seer, a foulspawn beserker and 2 norkers.

Patrik's miniature painting project 2013, week 05
This has been a productive week! I managed to finish 4 real minis and 12 quickdips.

* Delphine from Hasslefree miniatures. A bikiniclad barbarian.
Picture 1, Picture 2,

* Narg from Hasslefree miniatures. I was kinda disappointed to notice that he was wearing shorts when I started to paint him. He looks more like a wrestler or BDSM guy than a thoughnecked torturer.
Picture 1, Picture 2

* Elliwyn Heatherlark from Reaper Miniatures. Lovely sculpt which has about 10+ layers of green on her shield because I can't paint freehand. I originally set out for a flower design with horrible results so I eventually settled for a acorn.
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Ullr the Red (sold out at the moment it seems) from Red Box Games
Picture 1, Picture 2

I also quickdipped four Foulspawn Grues and 8 Prisoners (although I'm going to have to thin the dip abit, the mini's came out to heavy on the quickshade).

Update to my post above:

I basically haven't worked on the goblin pyros or the Angel of Radiance since I posted.

I finished the Chronoscope British Bobby.
I finished painting the Chronoscope Modern Witch but haven't finished her base decorations yet.
I may have finished a few others. I think I did.

I decided to use Chronoscope Abraham Van Helsing in my tabletop game as an NPC so I just coated the raw tin with Future, blackwashed him, painted his base gray, and coated him in another thin layer of future. I did the same for the two Dark Heaven Legends vampire spawn I have.

I liked the way these looked so much that I based my Reaper Pathfinder Minis Blackjack and Reaper Pathfinder Minis Ustog the Unslain, and coated then blackwashed each of them.

This was in the past month, so I can use them at the game table without them looking like they're completely untouched. Ustog was done in the past week. Yesterday I finally started painting on Blackjack and Ustog the Unslain.

Blackjack is being painted as a ghoul rogue with a silver rapier and the Civilized Ghoulishness feat, and Ustog the Unslain is being painted as a black-haired vampire rogue with a hardened viridium (should look basically like green obsidian) greatsword.

So far I've painted the most on Ustog. The ghoul only has his pants and gloves painted, and the blade of his rapier. Ustog is mostly painted, except he needs some belts for subtle touches and a few details with his fur before he gets his washes. His stats have him with the fleet feet 4 times, so he is really fast.

Not only are your painting skills getting better, but so are your picture taking. The paint doesn't look as shiny like I commented before. Is it just the light, or did you try a matte sealer?

I was thinking the same thing.

Is anyone else painting anything?

Yep. Since it's so much easier to buy miniatures than actually paint them i have quite a backlog to go through. As a new years resolution this year i set up a goal to paint at least one metal miniature a week. During may this year i change the rule to at least one metal miniature or four plastic miniatures (which are done by the dip method). I'm happy to say that so far i've been able to keep ahead of my goal with a total of 144 painted (61 metal miniatures and 83 plastic).

If i'm going to have any hope of painting all my miniatures i'm going to have to keep this up for some time :)

This week i've only finished 8 prepainted miniatres (mage knight vampire spawn) that are drying, but i hope to finish at least one metal miniature as well.

Last week i finished 2 metal miniatures and 4 prepainted.

Metal
Titus, a halfling barbarian from Hasslefree Miniatures
Ghast, unknown company

Plastic
Roper, repaint
Two chaos beasts, repaint
Wendingo, repaint

I also had to rebase a few miniatures on which i had used bases with a lip (like these), which doesn't fit within the squares/hexes on the gaming boards i use the miniatures on.

Here (Ostog the Unslain from Reaper Miniatures) is one of them.

This is what i'm currently have on my workbench.

On top of them i have three shelves of miniatures, two small plastic boxes and my other prepainted plastic miniatures to paint....

I got a bunch of 403 Forbidden messages when I tried to look at the pictures linked on this post.

Thanks! Believe it or not but those other miniatures where sealed with a matte sealer (Vallejo). The difference now is that I take the photo before applying the sealer (I still seal the base on those cases i need to add grass to the base before taking the photo though).

I've also tried different setups with the lighting. I've made a poor version of the lighting box described on the reaper forums and tried different angles with the lights. Now I just shine one light directly in front of the mini and one through some white cloth on the top. That seems to yield a good enough result. I've also been more careful with the autofocus on my mobilephone (I don't own a real camera).

Wolf Munroe wrote:

No need to be! Just buy a miniature sculpted by Reaper's Derek Schubert. They've got relativly large eyes which are easy to paint. They might be to cartoony for some tastes but I think they're great.

Wolf Munroe wrote:

Yeah, that's me going abit George Lucas and erasing photos from my imageshack account. I did it to start fresh in 2013 and I didn't think anyone would look at the old entries.

If there's miniatures you're interested in seeing I can retake a photo of them an post it.

Patrik's miniature painting project 2013, week 06
I'm keeping the pace from last week with four more miniatures finished (although no quickdips this week).

* Miranda from Hasslefree Miniatures. A easy mini to paint. I could probably have paid more attention to the face but at my skill level I think I would have had diminishing returns. I'm also not that pleased with the eyes, they ended up kind of crazy looking, but I'm kind of limited with painting eyes and I usually don't have all that much say in what I end up getting. I also realised that my mobile phone camera (sadly the only camera I got) isn't the best suited to take pictures. The red dress is not as bright in reality. Much less so actually.

But all and all, I'm pleased with the result.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Vistrail Quillscratch from Reaper. I thought I'd try some freehand but failed and ended up with just a zigzag pattern.

Picture 1, Picture 2

* Undead dwarf from Stonehaven's Dwarf Adventurers Kickstarter. The minis are well done but as a whole abit to big for my taste so I don't know if I'll ever use them and they will probably have a low priority to get painted, except for the smith.

The undead dwarf is another such exception. A really cool mini that also was faily easy to paint (although when I look at the pic from the Stonehaven Miniatures Webstore I realise that perhaps it isn't all that easy).

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Minimus from Hasslefree miniatures, looking down at his army.

This week: mites! For some reason I bought two blisters of these critters when they where released, and they've been sitting on my shelf ever since. I don't really know why I haven't picked these up before because I love the sculpts. They look so wonderfully menacing and miserable at the same time.

Nice! I have a few of those myself that I hope to eventually finish.

Patrik's Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 07
Slow week, Lots of starting up but never finishing, so in order to satisfy my goal of 1 finished mini minimum I forced myself to finish Taryn, shieldmaiden. Fiddling around with the mini for numerous weeks and then suddenly forcing it finished isn't the best way to get good results, but since I aim for tabletop quality I'm still pleased with the outcome (eventhough getting the hair to look good seems to be beyond me).

* Taryn, Spearmaiden from Reaper. Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Another miniature also made the cut:

* Wildling Spearwife with bow* from Dark Sword Miniatures. Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

* Don't know how wise it is to link to a site with the miniature painted up waaaaaay better than mine...

Skeletons Update: Bases

Some Spess Mahreens I did today.

Grand Lodge

So I decided to take the plunge.

My first paintjobs were a pair of reaper succubi in a simple 2 color coat and dip. Looking at them this close I can't say I'm very happy with them (so much so that I'm not posting images), but I learned a lot.

Some harsh lessons learned, I proceeded to paint a mini for my next character, a "mad dog" barbarian. The mini is a bronze age conversion of one of Reaper's cave girls. i could never get the facial details like I wanted, so I copped out and gave her warpaint.

Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3 Photo 4

And her faithful baby panda companion. Having no such mini on hand, I was forced to improvise with a raccoon mini from one of Reaper's familiar packs.

Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3

Work in progress: Drow gunslinger. I have no idea how I'm going to use this mini, the color scheme just seemed like a cool idea at the time.

Based and painted an Otherworld Miniatures werewolf as a vilkacis (incorporeal werewolf undead) this week.

I haven't finished with the base yet (it's solid gray at the moment), but I'm mostly done with the paint job.

It's painted white with bright red eyes and bloody red teeth and claws with just a bit of blood on the muzzle and the stomach as well. It's dry-brushed very light blue to try to get it to look more ghostly, even the bloody parts are dry-brushed very light blue, because the blood itself isn't real, just part of the ghost's appearance.

It was a really simple paintjob with only 5 colors so far (white, light blue, red, bright red, and gray), but I'm pretty pleased with it, even if I'm not 100% satisfied with the mini itself. On one side of its mouth, the teeth details are kind of absent. (As in there's just a flat spot in the open mouth there.) Looks OK with the blood-stained mouth, but I don't think the mini came out of the mold right or something. I've got a number of Otherworld Miniatures and this is the only one I've had reason to complain about, so I just have to write it off as "nobody's perfect."

I finished the Ustog the Unslain that I painted up as a vampire, I think, but I haven't put a clear coat on him yet. He has a viridium greatsword so it's got a green blade. I'm pretty pleased with him. I might have went a little heavy on the white drybrushing but he's a vampire so he's supposed to be pale.

I'm not sure if its the pictures, or the paint, what paint are you using, from the pictures it appears to be very thick.. If its accrylic, you might want to water it down a bit, might help show your details.

The paints are a Flames of War Quartermaster acrylic set. I have been thinning them down, but it hasn't been helping that some of the paints in the set have proven naturally thicker than others.

I know the face got too many coats, as I would botch the details, paint over them, then botch them again.

It may also be the clear coat I used, which proved much glossier than advertised.

I don't know those paints, you might want to consider Reaper, Vallejos or Games Workshop: those are the paints most mini-painters seem to use.

This is a neat little website which I used to get me started on mini-painting.

Something looks wrong with how your colours are laying.
Maybe they're not great paints?

- Did you wash the miniatures before painting?
Minis have a material around them which makes it easier to get them out of the mould and you need to wash that off.

- You might also want to apply primer.
I use a spray on primer, it leaves a thin coat of white (or grey, or black, depending on your style) over the mini. This thin coat sticks to the mini better than other paint and provides a surface which your other paint will grip.

Both of these things will help you to get a nice even layer of paint.

This will mean you need to use less paint, and make thinned paint more effective.

- On thinning
When you're starting out, I wouldn't thin the paint too much. Not until you're used to using it.

I painted these by following the advice in the link above. They're not perfect but I'm pretty happy.

Sovereign Court

I believe the flames of war paints are just rebranded vallejo paints - which do need some thinning with water.

Grand Lodge

I did neglect to wash my minis before priming. Good to know for next time.

I used a grey spray-on primer which unfortunately tended to overwhelm whites and flesh tones I tried to pain on top of it, requiring multiple coats. Must see if I can find a lighter primer.

That's a useful link there. Reading now. Hopefully I will be able to improve my technique for next mini.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 09
Slow week as I seem to be unable to hit my stride. I had plans to finish quite a few miniatures this week but in the end it only resulted in one. Perhaps next week will be better.

I like this the best of the minis you've posted. For some reason, I think that picture 1 is by far the best of the three. I think picture 3 would go up to the same as picture 1 if the feathers on the arrows were a little more detailed out. I think that what is making me dislike picture 2 is that I like what you did with the upper arm in picture 1, the left arm not looking the same is bothering me.. I think the colors should be different to accentuate the texture differences....

Again, this is my favorite of the ones you've posted..and better than I can currently do. So I'm just trying to open with my thoughts and maybe we can both learn from different thought process

Sovereign Court

Don't have any photos yet, but I have been putting together some of the Renaissance Miniatures kickstarted laser cut buildings. They look pretty spiffy.

Very nice version of "Caerwynn, Elf Hero" Patrik. I really like that mini, I may have to buy one. The only suggestion I would have is maybe some more highlights in the hair and a bit more drybrushing of the rest of the figure to bring out more details.

I thought I'd share my recent paintings also. I got back to painting after ten years hiatus and experimented with dipping technique for a while, but then painted few miniatures the tradional way. I'll be using dipping a lot when my Reaper miniatures arrive, but I like also using more time in painting a miniature =).

These pictures are too big I think, 'cause you're supposed to be looking them at a tabletop distance =).

First one is from Privateer Press's Hordes miniatures, a two-headed wolf. I painted this using colours suggested by DeathQuaker.

Wolf 1
Wolf 2

Next miniatures are for my Pathfinder character in Kingmaker, a half-orc Alchemist Grog.

This one is him in his normal form. It's an old Mithril miniature orc where I swapped his sword for a spear-like weapon from Games Workshop, and added a sword to his back in a scabbard.

This is the same character in mutated form. It's an old Warhammer vampire, but I swapped his head from a Warhammer orc miniature.

Last one is the same character mutated with an enlarge person spell. This is also a Warhammer miniature, River Troll this time. This also dublicates as a troll in my Blood Bowl team.

And at last is my latest painting, a Warhammer Beastman Chariot, with added standard from Tomb Kings standard bearer.

The latest things I am working on.

Thanks for the comments! Arrowhead feathers are something that I struggle with and really don't know how to do well. Regarding the arms they kinda look different. The one holding the bow seems to have an armbrace only covers half the arm. The brace on her other arm seems to enclose the whole arm, or the gab is hidden behind her sword sheate.

Thanks! I would probably have worked more on the hair if I've had more time, but the cue of unpainted miniatures is long (very long, I've cataloged it now and it makes me shudder) so speed is an essential factor :)

When I've finished all the miniatures in my current painting cue (2-5 years from now probably) I will spend more time per mini and try to learn some painting techniques :)

This week wasn't

Another slow week. I tried to concentrate on finishing some of the plastic miniatures that sitting around for to long waiting for a paintjob and quickdip, and I actually managed to finish some. Unfortunately it took time off from the minis I'm trying to "paint properly". So, once again I had to force a miniture finished, and once again I'm kind of pleased with the result. I need to work on my skintones and I could probably have made a cleaner job but all and all I'm satisfied with the result.

I present to you, Trinia Sabor from Reaper.

I hope next week will be more productive as I have 16 other miniatures I want to finish before the end of March.

Having a bit more practice and having read up on the proper application of wash coats, I submit my 3rd batch of minis for review. (None in the second batch struck me as all that great.)

A skunk from the same familiar pack:

Finally, the trickiest of the bunch, an archer, also from Reaper. A brown wash helped bring out the details, even if the breastplate ended up looking a little dingy. I didn't even try to paint the eyes though:

Oh, they're Kings of War. I've seen some miniatures for that game, the sculpts are really nice. And very cheaper than Warhammer.

Yeah the skeletons I posted earlier are Kings of War as well, and the skeletons were SUPER fun to assemble. They came with tons of extra parts for lots of variety.

Quality can be hit or miss depending on the range. The early dwarf crossbowmen / riflemen aren't very good. The plastic goblins are terrible (some kind of problem with the manufacturer). The skeletons are fantastic, zombies and ghouls great.

The line will be expanding quite a bit this year as well due to the kickstarter they ran.

I love the fact you are letting us in on your quest to get your minis painted. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Thanks :) I actually tried the DDM-mini-dip-thing but I did not like the result.

The posts puts some pressure on me to keep on finishing minis. I actually catalogued the figures I have unpainted (all of them including those I'm going to get rid off, but until I do they stay on the list) and it's a ridiculous ammount. And this year I have the Reaper kickstarter, Red Box Games kickstarter, Otherworld Indie Gogo campaign, Alien Assimilation Kickstarter and probably something else I've forgotten. I bet you don't have as many as I have! I have been "collecting" them since 1981. I bet I have close to 3,000 or maybe even more! And at the rate I paint them (perhaps 20 a year at most), most of my minis will never see a paint coat. Which is super sad. But that doesn't stop me from being a Reaper Bones backer or the Dwarvish and Gnomish Adventures one. :)

Currently I am cleaning several miniatures for repainting. I have to find some replacement pieces as I have several missing hands, blades and staves. Once I find what I need to move pictures from my camera then I'll post some pictures.

Once they are cleaned the one I will get done are my elven archer,a couple of mages, a bard, a horse, and my mom is redoing one that came out badly for her.

Ouch, that's got me beat by a pretty significant margin. I entered all my minis in a spread sheet and right now I have 549 minis that deserve a real paintjob and 687 that are in the "quickdip" cue. Although I'm planning to get rid of quite a few from both cues it's still enough to keep me occupied for a loooong time.

Looking good! You should base the Termagants and Genestealers though.

Week 12 - Two minis!
Two more minis finished this week. Getting better but still not good enough.

First is Aleandous the Errant from Red Box Games. I painted this to use as my character in a Eberron Savage Worlds game (that's set to start today \o/). I love the RBG minis but the faces are really out of my league to paint. Just to damn small. Although I'm pleased with the result (especially the cloak).

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

The second one I just finished is Seoni from the Reaper Pathfinder line. Fantastic sculpt which I had painted once but for some reason that I can't remember stripped and went into my redo-pile. I can't remember what the previous paintjob looked like, so I can't judge if this is a better one. Either way, I'm pleased enough with this one that I'm not going to redo it.

Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Um...if this is your "could be better" work...then man oh man I can't wait to see what you consider your "this is awesome" work.

Thanks, but the "getting better but still not good enough" comment was more about me finishing two miniatures this week instead of just one which has been a trend for the last few weeks :)

I think I can do better than these (like fix the eyes, work more on the cloak highlights, finally learn to paint good skintones) although that will require me putting more time into the minis, and right now I just want to get as many as possible done as fast as possible. But in a couple of years when I finally made it through my unpainted pile, then I'll probably try and work on improving :)

Yar!

From that pile of unpainted minis I posted earlier in this thread, I finally started to get around to painting those plastic Hero Quest minis. I've made a small dent in them so far. I decided to use the dip method for them too. I experimented with two different dips (light and dark) and two different primers (white and black) to see how they worked together and which gave the better end result. WARNING: This is my very first attempt at the dip method.

Goblin with axe
Goblin with straight sword
Two Goblins (light dip, left is black primer, right is white primer)
Goblin, straight sword (dark dip)
Two Goblins again (Dark dip, but this time the left is the white primer, the right is the black primer)
All four Goblins with straight swords (why is my camera making them more green than they actually are? cursed auto-settings)
Goblin with curved sword (light dip, white primer)
Two Goblins with curved swords (light dips, left is white primer, right is black primer)
Four Goblins with curved swords
Nine Goblins! (my crappy camera made them look more green than they actually are)

A ghoul/zombie with a cleaver
A Mummy (this one turned out pretty good, I think)

As for other mini's I've painted recently, here are a few:

Female Warrior (Dragon Quest 4 colors)
Elf Warrior
Bugbear
Scroll and Scythe Caster
Two-Weapon Warrior
Serpentfolk
Angel
Maralith (This one I actually did a long while ago, but one of her weapons/hands broke off and was lost, so I recently replaced it with a spare whip I had lying around and wasn't using)
Death Knight
Skellies wreathed in demonic flames
Giant Skellie
Mace and shield warrior
Big Bad Evil Guy with an axe and shield (yes I like my minis dark and gritty sometimes)

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 13
Not alot of time for painting this past week but I still managed to complete two miniatures. All and all I had bigger hopes for March than what I produced. Let’s hope I can hold a better tempo in April.
