Can you re-train feats?

Rules Questions

My character picked up a +2 rapier a couple of levels ago. As magic items are scarce in our campaign, i opted to put a feat into weapon focus with said rapier.
I`m now regretting it, as the rapier doesn`t fit in with where i want my character to go. I feel that the morning star has more of the correct feel to it, and the extra damage is good too.
Is there a rule about being able to re-train feats such as this, or should i throw myself on the mercy of my D.M.?

Throw yourself at the mercy of your GM. There is no RAW way to retrain feats.

Though, I wonder what sort of campaign has 'scarce' magic items. Even if that were true, do you not have access to a good deal of wealth (see the WPL Table: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gamemastering.html), and some sort of party Crafter? Pathfinder wasn't, by default, meant to be played with 'rare magic items'. Players should be able to acquire these with reasonable consistency provided they put the effort into it, and provided the GM gives them the right amount of GP per level.

DM-mercy is the only option, I'm afraid.

But if your DM is okay with using 3.5 material, there are some retraining options in Player's Handbook II (pages 192 to 203). For minor retrainings (like feat choices), the book suggests allowing one retraining each time the character gains a new level.

Is your character a fighter? Fighters can retrain some of their bonus feats as they progress.

I`m playing an Inquisitor. The D.M. let me have rapier as my gods ravoured weapon instead of dagger.
Scarce may not have been the best choice of words, although we are definitely underpowered and poorer than average for our level {6}.
We have a couple of crafters in the party, so we can make items. Money is a bit tight, though.

Are you playing an Adventure Path?

We play that a wish can retrain a feat..probably not a valid option for you now.

Explain your situation to your GM and then buy him cookies.
Works wonders.

Cookies sound like the best course of actio! We are playing Carrion Crown. I`m fairly sure i can make a Diplomacy roll to get my D.M.to let me change it, but a rule would have been nice!

I solve this problem with special feats in my own campaigns.

I consider this the biggest disservice to weapon-oriented characters that exists in the game.

If you're a Fighter or Cavalier, I let you have the Weapon Retraining ability from the Warblade from 3.5's Tome of Battle. With some time of training and practicing each morning, you can change up your weapon-related feats each day.

For other characters I've always allowed instant changing of a feat if you've never used it, or spending a few days of downtime retraining if you have.

Yeah, no RAW way to retrain.

This is why I have started allowing one rebuild in each campaign. Often players find a combo is boring or at least not as effective as they thought or maybe they didn't read something.
Rather than have them go suicidal so they can bring in a new character, I allow one rebuild for spell, skill, feat selections or even minor shifting of abilities.

I allow characters to retrain their feats, but it's not free. They need time and they need money to cover the training expenses.

Usually it's 1d6 x 100GP x PC Level and 1d10 x PC Level in days to retrain.

Sometimes it can take a couple months, or less.

This is not entirely true.

Upon reaching 4th level, and every four levels thereafter (8th, 12th, and so on), a fighter can choose to learn a new bonus feat in place of a bonus feat he has already learned. In effect, the fighter loses the bonus feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat, prestige class, or other ability. A fighter can only change one feat at any given level and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time he gains a new bonus feat for the level.

Thus, there IS a RAW way to retrain feats, but only if you are a fighter, and only for bonus feats.

Alas - for the OP's specific situation - without GM fiat or 3.5 material (as Are mentioned above re: PHBII), looks like you're out of luck.
