Liberty's Edge 3/5

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

In the session I ran this weekend, one player had his druid PC use an area of affect spell that included another PC. I let it go at the time but upon reflection, I think I made the wrong call. Another PC was unconscious and would have been in the area if her player hadn't pointed this out. As a result, the druid player delayed until only the paladin PC, whose hp total plus dying hp was above the max damage of the spell. The paladin fell unconscious, which the player later told me he didn't appreciate, the druid healed him, the game continued without a issue. I still feel I should have disallowed the action and am looking for opinions.

I believe that in those cases player, who was subject to aoe, should decide if it's acceptable or not, even if it metagames slightly since both players don't know each others habbits or gameplay.

I can tell you are a good GM just from this post. You reflect after games and consider the possibility that you could have been wrong. I wish there were more people out there like you.

I believe AoE that includes players must be aggreed upon by all players involved, or it could esculate to full PVP and no one wants that. That's my two cents.

Can't do AE on another PC unless the player consents. Breaks the PVP and don't be a jerk rules.

Consider the example where the AE does enough damage to the PC (but doesn't kill or knock unconscious) and that's enough damage that the monster kills him right after. Yes the AE couldn't and didn't kill the PC, but it was enough to result in his death.

There was such an occurrence last week I ran King Xeros of Old Azlant. A cleric of Asmodeus blasted an empowered fireball to an area where a very wounded monk resided. The cleric's player did ask if it was okay to blast away, and the monk's player said yes.

If the monk would have rolled enough from the reflex save he wouldn't have gotten a single point of damage. The die rolled up 3, though.

The monk went to minus something, one hit point away from death. Other players (and me) were oblivious of this. So they all rush to him and take their cure light wound wands out, ready to heal the monk the upcoming round.

Bling, monk rolls stabilization and fails. I jokingly ask "So now you're dead?" which to my surprise I got the response "Yes."

I found it hilarious. The combat itself was a breeze and they were nowhere near a PC death, yet this cleric manages to blast their monk to oblivion. Others, the monk's player included, found this ordeal funny. And just to be fair, the cleric paid the monk's resurrection on his own.

So not all PvP is sour faces and grumpy mumbling. ;)
