Selling Vanities?

So, in another recent thread I was asking about dealing with raise-dead and etc in the form of PP. This led me to wonder about something else.

Some points from the guide before my question:

Guide wrote:
PCs can also sell off gear, including the dead character’s gear, at 50% of its listed value to raise money to purchase a spell that will return their slain ally from the dead, though they can only do so in a settlement and they cannot sell off any items found during the current scenario that they haven’t purchased.

Also:

Guide wrote:
Note that it’s possible for a player to spend her character’s Prestige Points even if the PC is dead, petrified, or otherwise out of commission.

and finally, Table 5-4 specifies that items acquired by spending 1 or 2 PP are worth 0 gold and cannot be sold.

Nothing, however, is said about Vanities. Given the second quote from the guide, and given that Vanities largely represent buying businesses, homes, and well "vanities" to represent things that happen during down-time, can Vanities be "sold" (for half their PP purchase cost, as per normal selling-back rules) to be put towards the PP a character might be able to use towards getting raised from the dead?

Example - say my character, Captain Julian Ignatius John Patrick "Black" Ramsey (his middle name is another line - don't ask) dies, but only has 11 PP available. Faced with the choice of "y'er money of y'er life", he'd probably choose to sell his beloved ship, "The Ardent Lady" to pay for the cost of bringing him back from the dead (given his religion, the afterlife might not be as kind to him if he hasn't made some sort of great achievement in piracy before he joins Besmara on her black ship). Likewise, my Chelaxian slave-merchant would definitely choose to give up his control of his caravan to a fellow Chelaxian if it bought him the "clout" needed to get raised from the dead.

Unlike my last question, I'm not sure anything in the PFS Guide or Field Guide talks about this, so I'd love for opinions (possibly Mike or Mark depending on how discussion goes?).

Thanks very much!

If he does that, without first salvaging the figurehead from the ship, he'll be needing a second Raise Dead. Just sayin'. ;-)

Well, Commodore, ye know I'd just be stealin' th'lady back later once I've had me bed-rest and dried out me pistol and powder, arr.

and acquired the requisite 10 PP to buy another ship...arr...

Though it would be quite the shame to give up such an impressive vessel, even for a brief time, I can certainly see the appeal of returning to the land of the living...

As for the question... I don't know, but it is a good one to ask, to be sure.

The intent is that anything acquired wit PP not be able to be sold for cash that can be turned into WBL-contributing items. I'm don't think there's been a ruling on this one, but my advice is to assume you cannot sell anything acquired through PP until there's a ruling stating otherwise.

What if you were 750gp short of paying for the spell. Could you spend 2 Prestige on a 750gp Diamond for use in the casting? Or would you just end up with a giant (well, decently sized) worthless shiny rock?

Well, the guide does say:

Guide wrote:

Free purchase up to 750 gp 2 PP

Once per session, you can acquire any single item of
this cost or less from your faction by spending the
appropriate PP. Items purchased this way are worth 0 gp
and cannot be sold.

Just so long as you don't do it in combat.

Because Vanities only affect the game in terms of Day Jobs or minute things from Followers (using a system reminiscent of the "Henchman" system from AD&D way back in the day that I loved), they really don't have a GP cost, but since PP "in-game" is sort of like "clout" or "influence" with your faction, something big like a ship, business, membership in a society, property, or a rare/special wayfinder would still be of value to other faction members, at least in my thinking - hence the inquiry :)

Jon ninja'd me while I was being wordy (as often happens to me :P)

Gold/PP cannot be split, as Jon's link says, but if you are paying 100% for things in PP, I believe that's different.

Edit: I think I slightly misread your question Mystic - if the whole cost of the spell is 750gp or less, then yes, if the material components are 5,000gp and you're short, then no, as Jon pointed out.

The PP spell casting costs for raise dead already include the material component cost.

Just bumping this thread since I think the original question got obscured a bit...

*

I can see a church (especially one to gods of the sea) consider having your ship an asset and would like to have one. Likewise, if I could not afford to raise myself, perhaps temple X could sell my successful jewelry shop in a charity auction (I will not be using it anymore :). I like the idea (half PP buy back). Theoretically the will of a character could be set up to accomplish just that (get my shop for half price, get all the proceeds until I purchase it back at full price...)

OK I guess I am just adding to the bump at this point. I chose to buy the shop knowing I wouldnae be able to afford a resurrect for that much longer. I am at the bottom end of the new tier and season 4's new toughness increases the tension just a bit :)

The rules do not currently allow for the selling of Vanities for any monetary value. If we decide to allow such, we'll explicitly say how it works in a future version of the campaign rules.

As for Harmor's extensive list, I just wanted to point out that none of the Prestige Awards from Inner Sea Magic are legal for Pathfinder Society play as per the Additional Resources, just so there's no confusion.

Ooops...forgot about that source. I don't think the original OP was asking for gold values for selling the businesses or property, but just selling them back at 1/2 the PP.

Please consider allowing the selling of property and business vanities (PFS is getting more deadly as it is and anything that helps keep characters around longer I'm for).

So I guess this is going no where?

Well, I think this counts as somewhere:

The possibility is left open for the future, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

We'll recommend this for 4.3 Guide then.

Are PP considered a monetary value? The OP was asking about vanities for PP. I assume this does not change the 'rules do not currently allow' answer, just curious for curiosity's sake. :)

Yeah I would be opposed vanities being sold for gold. Vanities were "purchased" with PP so if they were sold they would be 1/2 the PP.
