Mythic Adventures was just announced at Gencon for later next year.

Rules for higher level play perhaps? More details to follow.

Oh snap.

From James Jacobs last year...

I have many questions.

Apparently the next AP, Demon Blight Crusades, will use Mythic rules.

Silver Crusade

Following it on twitter #gencon hashtag. Lots of info!

Overlay rules... not sure how I feel about this. I enjoyed being able to play a 3.5 character past 20th but the game did increasingly break down. This gives the chance of a more 'epic' style of play without breaking the mechanics. I'm 'hmmm', with a tentative 'ooh' and a side of 'cool'.

All based on JBE's comments via twitter, so nothing solid yet.

Edit: Ok, this is worth a huzzah

Sounds like additional powers to the core system, rather than adding stuff to the top. Uses current CR system but doesn't necessarialy extend math. Monsters in the book, levels gain through actions, not XPs.

This, I think, is going to be the thing that polarises people. I can see some people hating this idea as it puts the GM as sole arbiter of when people level. Not that they weren't already...

From the (admittedly limited, one twitter feed) info we have, there will still be normal levelling. There's also likely to be a strong guideline & possible rule on what actions are leveling

Items that grow in power with you. Sounds like a "Weapons of Legacy" add-on.

Which had a very nice idea, but was executed horribly. (Very horribly, at that.)

Paizo has been promising in their releases for the most part, so if they are going to take a stab at the 3.5 "Weapons of Legacy" concept (with the post that was just brought up), I am positive it will be much more rewarding than the one that was shown in 3.5.

I liked Weapons of Legacy, but only because I houseruled away all the penalties. Hopefully the Paizo version is penalty-less :)

I'm curious to find out more about the mythic rules. At this point, I'm not sure what to think about the concept (epic, yet not epic?).

I always loved that idea, but the implementation was eccch. There were some neat items in the book, though, and I used some of the mini-encounters and some of the items in a regular campaign.

Sooooo happy ..... mystic rules .... but 2013 .... oh well there is always time for a good, honest 11 month playtest ^^

At the products seminar today they mentioned that this would go into public play test soon. They wouldn't commit to a particular date but suggested that a month and a half from now might be feasible.

Personally, the way they described it seemed to be really cool by giving PCs (and monsters!) a touch of the divine without breaking the CR system. Jason Bulmahn suggested that "epic level" play (20+) is not under consideration and may not ever happen as he considers it to be stacking bad math on top of bad math. I have to agree that adding powers that let you bend or break the rules are more interesting than just stacking more numbers on top of the existing system.

Liberty's Edge

want.

It'll be interesting to see how the CR system is handled for mythic monsters; not just outsider lords but other things like the Oliphaunt of Jandelay as well.

"Mythic allows you to go beyond 20, but not in the way you might think. The levels are not ones you gain with xp. More news to come soon!..."

This was from Jason's FB post announcing Mythic Rules. It was a later comment.

Yep, I saw that which is what made me really curious as to how they're going to handle power comparison (perhaps they'll throw away CR entirely after 25). Man, the playtest cannot get here fast enough. Is it October yet?

They are different. Munchkin pathfinder was announced today because the contract was signed today.

That is very good to know. :)

I want both, don't get me wrong, but as tw different things.

Mythic Munchkin? Would the world even be ready for such a thing?

Has there been any word on the sometimes discussed "guide for high level (sub-mythic) play"?

I wonder if that will feature as part of the Ultimate Campaign book.

The advice forums here are pretty active.

One way to avoid going over 20th level would be to apply e6 methods to the current system along with such things as the following.

- Planar templates/sub-templates: The planes have an overall theme that is usually covered by creature type. Most planes include many diverse sub-regions which can be worthy of sub-templates of their own. While many deities share similar domain entries they dwell in separate planes. This gives many possibilities of mixing templates around to fit the sub-themes for any viable combo imaginable.

- Divine/mythic reputation system: Spread from 1-20 with progressive associated boons. Think of the PFS system on a mythic/divine scale in relation to the worldly scale.

A goal might be that the mythic systems do not substantially unbalance worldly-based themes/play when in use; more options as opposed to power level skewing options. Specific interaction rules with mythical/planar situations based on where you are along the mythic scales could avoid jumps in power that would break down worldly interactions. The introduction/progression method in relation to a 20 level limit (even with e6 style additions), from nothing/a twinkle at 1st level to higher levels where mythic/planar themes take focus, can decide how well the whole thing comes across.

Hmmm. That "levels gain through actions, not XPs" thing sounds similar to how the Pathfinder MMO is handling it's leveling. Which is probably exactly why they're adding it.

While I'm looking forward to seeing these I'm afraid the boards here will spontaneously combust...

As long as the internet doesn't break in half, we're good.

I think Mythic rules are premature.

We need decent rules for playing toward level 20 before we need rules for going past it.

Umbral these rules appear to be covering mythic play both pre and post 20

It might be worth a look, then. I'm not holding my breath.
