Paizo does it right. I love a lot of the artists mentioned ITT but I don't think they say Pathfinder to me.

WAR is Pathfinder.

I could be dead wrong here, but after seeing Wayne Reynolds art on a lot of Dragon und Dungeon covers, I think the very first Pathfinder picture was his sketch for Seoni.

Moved thread.

I'm personally a fan of Todd Lockwood myself. Here's something he did for Paizo when it still produced Dungeon magazine.

What's he doing these days? And does he do art for Pathfinder?

Keremy Beyit didn't do the cover art for Skull & Shackles. Daryl Mandryk did those. Mr Beyit did do the cover art for Serpent's Skull, though, and I'm assuming that's what you meant.

Unfortunately, Todd Lockwood has not done any artwork for Pathfinder. I'd love to see Lockwood art on the cover of an adventure path.

I love what Pathfinder has done with the art in the books. I'm quite fond of Wayne Reynolds' art too, as many others are - I love the clutter of items his characters have. It makes them seem like real adventurers with all their stuff, rather than the usual "Oh here's a sword and a dagger" art. I find the poses dynamic without being stereotyped for the most part.

I can live with most styles (and I adore DiTerlizzi!), but I absolutely abhor Jeff Easley's work. And the art done for D&D 3.x, wtf was wrong with those people's skulls? The hit-and-miss quality of the images in the 3.x Monster Manuals was off-putting, too. Pathfinder all the way, any day.

Yeah that's what I meant oops! I just found out abut them earlier in the thread.

I have always loved that Dragon cover.

I knew the image you were linking even before I clicked on it.

One thing I like about this thread is finding out the names of various artists and looking up their work. This thread is great for finding out new artists or the names of artists whose work you like but did not know the name of the artist.

Gimme a break!

Parkinson > Elmore > WAR.

That is all.

Never seen his art before. Amazing stuff! I wish he could give some of the same love and attention to the male form, however :)

He has done some art of men, just not a lot of it. If you search around you will find some.

Hopefully there is something special about the nostalgic art I love other then just "You had to be there?"

The Snark-bag is right about the weaknesses of those two era's.

Erol Otus, Jeff Dee, Willlingham => Coloring Book style

Parkinson, Elmore, Easley => Everything artificially bronzed, and romanticised. Chainmail Bikinis.

But they capture the feel of 1e & 2e play. Why is that?

Did you have to be there?

Keith Parkinson

Don't know the title of this one, a grim reaper on a drake?

King's Gold

Druida

I think it is less of a "capture the feel" and more that this was the artwork that was used and so that is what people identify with the different editions.

In 10-20 years people will likely identify the current artists as capturing the feel of Pathfinder.

I like the Caroline Eade artwork that Paizo has used for some of the interiors - but her style is distinctly different from many of their norms.

But I like the norms as well.

Well its save to say, that without excellent layout of Sarah E. Robingson and the amazing art of WAR or some other great artists PF would not be no. 1 rpg on the market, but only a big sausage of overcomplicated rules.

Just need to get this off my chest. Chuck Lukacs is the worst artist in the world. Every time I see an image by him I squirm. The overuse use of distinct lines for shading makes everything look like they're composed entirely of worms! So, so bad. Libris Mortis was ruined by him being the chapter page artist.

Some of my favorites:

Wayne Reynolds (obviously)

Jean-Baptiste Reynaud always amazes; if I dislike the subject of the work, I still appreciate the style.

Branko Bistrovic just makes me smile sometimes.

I have also always been a fan of Matt Wilson's art, he does a lot of art for Privateer Press, makers of Iron Kingdoms etc.

How did I forget this guy:

Howard Lyon
Fell Court

Sanctuary

Seldarine

Definitely! I already do!

Just Googled him. His comic book heroes look, to me, like comic book heroes. They're glossy, malproportioned, and 2-dimensional, and so on. That means he hit his goal 100%, I'd think.

My problem with WAR is that he caters to the people who think of their characters as "toons," but not to the grognard segment who hearken back to the old pulp stuff. Nobody pictures REH's Conan in Technicolor, with a 15-foot sword that looks like it's made of rock, flying through the air like Tinkerbell. Likewise, not everyone wants to see the iconics that way -- although in name of consistency and maintaining the greater modern fan base, we have to.

Of course, if it were up to me, all the PF art would be Medieval-style woodcuts. That would sell like hell to me, but leave 99% of the fans fleeing for other markets. So no one should take my preferences as being indicative of anything but a tiny corner of the larger market.

I threw "Rob Liefeld" into Google's image search and got this (Link) as the sixth result. I grinned.

My favorite Liefeld

I really like WAR's work and it's one of the things that keeps me buying the hardcover books. I think everything about the books is gorgeous.
