General Interest Check

Recruitment

I've found I enjoy running PBP games a lot. One of the games I was playing in died, another I planned on running was a still birth and still a third is getting off to a very slow start. So instead of proposing another niche game that may or may not interest people I'm going to take a general interest poll of people here currently looking to get into another game. I could run several types of games:

-Adventure path (basically any)

-Apocalyptic/Post Apocalyptic (future or fantasy or zombie or whatever)

-Sandbox/Exploratory Fantasy

-Dungeon Crawl

-Supernatural Horror (Ie True Blood, Lost Girl, Grimm, et al.)

-Historical Fantasy

I am open to a lot of house rules, and anything Paizo on d20pfsrd.com (including the ARG). If one of the above type games would interest you please chime in, be as specific as you can. Also mention any house rules you like or do not care for, and what level of play you would prefer (Low, Mid or High). I'm hoping to get a group of four to five people wanting to play the same thing.

My style: While my games do include story, my homebrews tend to be relatively combat heavy. I use interactive maps for all battles and dungeons. I'm running a couple dungeon crawls right now with basically no NPCs, they are very combat heavy. Also running two more story driven games that can go a week or more between combats. I prefer to keep things moving, and stick to a strict interpretation of the RAW whenever possible. However if you want to do something outside RAW I try to be flexible and fair (just ask first).

Dotting my interest, not everyday you get a DM offering to run whatever.

I'd be interested in playing a high level campaign 'cause there are allot of prestige classes I've never gotten to try out, most notably cypher mage, genie binder and student of war, and with the (oft) grueling slow pace of pbp you'd be looking at entering them after a year or two of play at the first.

-Adventure paths; If you'll end up running one I'm most interested in Shackled City, Age of Worms and Skulls and Shackles. I've already played through Legacy of Fire, Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne and am currently in Kingmaker and Second Darkness campaigns.

-Apocalyptic/Post Apocalyptic (future or fantasy or zombie or whatever); Sounds interesting but probably only fun a low levels like E6 and I'd be most interested in playing at high levels.

-Sandbox/Exploratory Fantasy; Such a themed game interests me the most, I've always wanted to explore the Osirian desert and the Mwangi expance, planeswalking might be fun as well.

-Supernatural Horror (Ie True Blood, Lost Girl, Grimm, et al.); Hmmm... Maybe a deadly game where you'll whoop for every successful die roll and groan knowing your dead at a failed one? I'm game.

-Historical Fantasy; Something like a low- to non-magic campaign? Might be interesting but not really my first choice.

Sandbox/Exploratory Fantasy is the type I enjoy the most it creates a living world in my experience and has good verisimilitude. Also characters are more or less automatically entwined in to the story. Altough I would love to have a chance to play kingmaker. Level wise I like to start low and work up from there, but not a big fan of start at 1st because some concepts take few levels to mature. Combat heavy is nice as long as it's not taken to the extreme of kick in the door style.

House rules, some are more just how I like things run. None of the things are deal breakers or makers just giving my preferences.

Getting rid of alignment as a game mechanic and replacing it with something else for stuff like smite or just running it as more gray. Mechanics are mechanics flavor can be changed is my favorite. I like the flaw system, meaning the one giving skill points not feats. Setting based house rules are good also, like no gunslingers since setting isn't at that technology level or something like that. Collateral damage from spells or other stuff meaning that lighting bolt is going to hit something. Stuff from other publishers ok with DM approval. The one's I do not like, I very strongly dislike fudging for or against. Fumble mechanics I have yet to see one that works. Arbitrary realism rules like falling doesn't do enough damage, but keeping the swimming in lava totally doable.

1. Is this the zombiepacalyse where you can get turned if you are bitten?

2. Is this a game of attrition* or do we actually have a chance to put an end to it?

*This would make it more like the movies in the sense that people are just trying to survive.

I am cool with either one, but the I would like to be in the correct mindset, hero or survivalist.

I would prefer mid-fantasy. Zombies are not that hard to deal with at higher levels(5 and above), but low fantasy would not be as fun IMHO.

So that's two people interested in a sandbox type game. I've run a lot of games with high guns. I'm a huge fan of mechanics is mechanics flavor can be anything. I also like making all mortals aside from people with auras (clerics, paladins) neutral.

I played in an extremely fun sandbox PBP a while back that unfortunately died because the DM had real life issues. I think it'd be quite fun to run one.

Keep the posts coming please ^_^

Edit:Not set on Zombies Mr Swagger, just whatever people are looking for. If I did do zombies it would likely be an E6 game with guns everywhere. A survival type situation like the Walking Dead universe.

edit:I only said mid fantasy because I thought we were still doing the zombie thing.

-Adventure path (basically any)-I don't want to have to be the good guy. I am not asking to be evil, but I would at least like to be the anti-hero.

-Apocalyptic/Post Apocalyptic (future or fantasy or zombie or whatever)-If we do this I would like for it to be gritty.

-Sandbox/Exploratory Fantasy-I would still like some sort of goal even if we have enough time and freedom to do side quest.

-Dungeon Crawl-PbP combats take a long time, not that I mind combat, but I would still like a story to be there. Of course this would give me a chance to try a few things out

-Supernatural Horror (Ie True Blood, Lost Girl, Grimm, et al.)-I have never seen any of these shows. Would Supernatural count?

-Historical Fantasy-least interest for me. Well I think it could be fun, but it would be low fantasy, and probably require a decent amount of homebrewing.

PS:Can we start past first level? 3rd level would be nice. I am not greedy. :)

I will retract that for now. If we do a sandbox I still would like to have a some sort of goal. Running around doing random things just because we can does not seem fun. Of course I have never been a player in a 100% player-driven game either so that might be the reason for that.

I love plans shifting, that way you can have any where and any when in the same game

It requires characters with strong goals. I would provide a map full of interesting things and groups for you to interact with. Probably a taming the frontier type scenario, similar to kingmaker. I will likely largely do away with alignment, so you can act however you like. However your actions will still have appropriate consequences.

What about a game set in Mendev, seeking to tame and reclaim lands taken by the worldwound? Queen Galfrey, desperate for crusaders of worth has put out a new offer. Anyone who can clear land of its demonic influence, and erect a wardstone there will become ruler of those lands in perpetuity to use as they see fit.

Probably start around 5th level and go for fast advancement. Likely give everyone the leadership feat for free at the appropriate level.

Sandbox style works for me. I don't mind any of the adventure paths and frankly I've not been fortunate enough to play any of them to the end. The new one, Skull and Shackles, looks fun.

I've been in quite a few pbp games that fizzled out over the last 2 years for various reasons. So I am looking for one that will have some staying power.

Homebrew campaigns are fun too if the right person is running the show. Combat moderate, rp moderate. I'm not a fan of tons of house rules. I don't mind them but too many of them is just not good.

At any rate, count me in DM. Please?!

Liberty's Edge

Definitely interested.

For the APs, I'd really like to play Jade Regent, as that was my very first experience with Pathfinder and I ended up making it to the end of book 1 before I had to move away and leave my tabletop group behind. But any of the other APs is fine. (After Jade Regent, my interest lies primarily in Legacy of Fire or Age of Worms, but I'm not interested in playing Council of Thieves or Rise of the Runelords).

I've never played a supernatural horror game, but I've heard good things about WoD and Call of Cthullu, so count me in there as well.

Post-apocalyptic? I love Fallout! Let's do it!

Historical doesn't sound appealing to me, honestly.

I don't particularly care for dungeon crawls, I like to RP.

I have two different characters kicking around in the back of my mind. One's a hero, and one is not, so no matter which role we end up playing, I'm good to go.

Edit: Oh, my availability. I am available to post at least twice per day on any given day, though usually if required I can post between six and ten times per day.

Sounds like it would be real fun campaign. Getting some concepts all ready and that usually is a good sign.

I can see fitting a cyphermage into that...

I'm seeing a young black haired Varisian youth, small-ish with spectacles, dressed in sturdy clothes fit for get muck on them, maybe leather armor tooled as an explores outfit with a long coat with many pockets and a wool scarf to keep out the cold complete with fingerless leather gloves and high boots. Maybe a rouge 1-2/ wizard 3-4 going Cyphermage.

Self-Exiled in disgrace from the Order of Cyphers in Riddleport after voicing objections when a rival stole his research and presented it as his own Peitry Valzarion roams Avistan in bitter anger searching for clues and scraps of lore to increase his knowledge and power. His main goal being to unlock enough arcane power to be able to return to the order and humiliate them with his discoveries.

His wanderings have led him to the most unlikely of places; A boat heading to Mendev. His destination; The Worldwound. Let them scoff! He would show those bastards the meaning of knowledge. He would harvest reagents from the deamons, discover lost knowledge and find new, practical ways to apply it! The offer of rulership did not entice Peitry, let others squabble with nobles and peasants, run kingdoms and manage armies. Pietry wanted power. What he needed was a place to master it.

Okay, looks like enough people are interested that I will make this an official recruitment for the Mendev idea. I'll throw out a few options character creation wise and see what people want to do. Please vote for your preferred options.

Level: 5, 6 or 7 (We'll be using fast track XP chart)

House Rules:
-Guns (No guns, Commonplace guns, or Guns everywhere?)
-Hero Points?
-Custom races from ARG?

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Definitely interested in the Mendev game. I'd like to play a wandering dwarf monk who arrives in Mendev while on a pilgrimage to train and listen at each monastery in the world, and when he gets there he gets caught up in something big.

He agrees to help clear the land, not for personal gain, but to protect the people and to cast judgment on the forces of the Abyss.

Character Concept:

The monk was born in the town of Ustalav during the events of the Carrion Crown AP. Seeing so much death and undeath around him, the child felt scared, and confused, but he took solace when he traveled to the one place where he felt the undead could not hurt him, a small temple of Iomedae on the outskirts of the city. There, the high cleric would always welcome him with a smile, and the child would sit and listen to a discussion of ethics or morality, learning things like how to be kind or generous or noble.

As the child grew older, his visits to the temple did not wane. Even as a young man, he wanted to know everything he could about the sanctity of life and how to be a good person. Finally, the high cleric smiled and said, "I have taught you everything I know, my son."

However, the young man still had questions. Questions that he knew the high cleric could not answer. So he decided to travel to another town and pray at the temple there for guidance.

But when the young man arrived, he found not a temple, but a monastery in that town. Still, it was a place of religious teaching, so the young man stopped and spoke to the elder there. He was so moved by the elder's words of ascetism and denial of the self above others that the young man stayed at the monastery and trained himself in their ways, becoming a monk.

After three years at the temple, the monk told his master that it was time for him to move on. He still sought the answers to those questions he had arrived at town with so long ago. What is the meaning of life and death? Why do the gods allow people to tamper with its cycle so easily?

The monk moved from town to town, praying at temples and spending time at monasteries, seeking the answers. Always searching, never stopping.

Commonplace Guns (I don't want to deny any options for interested parties)
I've never played in a game with Hero Points. I'll have to review the rules, but sure, why not?
I vote yes on the custom races. I'm playing a dwarf, but again, I don't want to deny any options.

An Kingmaker like Campaign in Mendev seems interesting to me. I may have a charakter concept in the back of my head.
It would be an Dwarven Cavalier trying to establish an dwarven settlement as an stronghold against the threat of the worldwound.

6
Commonplace Guns
I would like to make the Heroe Points decission dependant of your decission how epic and dangerous this campaign should be.
Custom races are equal to me because I wwill play a dwarf if I should be chosen.

I'm going to wait until I have more time tomorrow, then I will create an actual recruitment thread and link it here. In the mean time continue to chime in on the rules options.

House Rules:
-Guns; Guns everywhere, not that I'd be gearing for them but I like a certain dab of steampunk flavor and I can see Peitry carrying one.
-Hero Points; Yes. Giving out Hero Feats might add to flavor as well as the leadership feat.
-Custom races from ARG; Sure, why not.

Edit; Level 7 is my vote, as I said I want a chance to play at high levels.

Liberty's Edge

Looking through the custom rules in the ARG, I think I might just make my own type of dwarf for this game. It should be fun.

How many RP do you want to give us for this, Jelani?

Is the Advanced Races Guide available on an srd?

Right here.

Votes:

-Common place guns. Not myself interested but if someone else wants to doesn't take diminish my fun in any shape or form.
-Hero points, never played with them so hard to say. Seems ok at least in tougher campaign. Don't have any real opinion yet.
-Custom races, pretty much the same as with guns assuming people are not just given free reign and they are checked by the GM before approval.

Would you be open to using psionics from Dreamscarred Press? I would like to try a Psion.

I'll decide for sure when I make the recruitment thread, but probably 12 RP for custom races. As for psionics, I'd prefer not to. Sorry.

Standard or Advanced? (Or Monstrous if you're feeling crazy haha)

Edit: Never mind, I see that those are based on the points you give, so 12 points defaults to Advanced.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist so I would ask for no guns. But honestly, I've not played a campaign with them. I do love the Steampunk theme though but I've never mixed it with my gaming so I am speaking purely from bias and not from experience when I ask this.

I wont use them if they are included. To those of you with experience, would that put me at a disadvantage? Perhaps that could be part of my character bio. I'm a traditional "fletcher" or "blacksmith" put out of business by the new technologies and now turns to a life of adventure to put food on the table and prove that a good bow is more than a match for any silly old gun. Hrm, has potential me thinks!

So my votes would be:

1. Guns? Not for me thanks
2. Hero points: sure so long as it isn't crazy. For example, no "hero points", "adventure points", "destiny points", "luck points". I like them if the give a gentle nudge in the direction of success. I hate them if they are overwhelmingly powerful. 8)
3. Custom races? Again, I'm more of a traditionalist but I've nothing against them. Hell, I just bought my copy of the Advanced Race Guide yesterday. Again, game balance is key. No one race should overpower other races.

Liberty's Edge

In my experience guns aren't particularly superior to bows. They have higher damage and critical ratios, but they are very short range and those range penalties stack up quickly. Additionally, if a gun ever misfires and then explodes on you, you will have a very bad day.

Bows are more consistent, more reliable, and easier to deal constant damage with in the form of composite longbows (only way to deal extra damage with a gun is if you're a 5th level gunslinger).

Liberty's Edge

Okay, here's my custom dwarf race, the Duregar Exile-

Duregar Exiles are a race of powerful dwarves from deep underground who were cast out from their homeland or chose to leave in order to explore the world above. They are stronger than their normal dwarf cousins, but they have adapted to life above ground unlike their duregar brethren. However, their lessened contact with the earth has diminished their fierce spellcasting abilities and superior eyes.

Crunch:

Type: Humanoid (Dwarf)- 0 RP
Size: Medium- 0 RP
Speed: Slow Speed- -1 RP

Ability Score Modifier Quality- Advanced (+2 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Con, +4 Wis, -2 Cha)- 4 RP

Language Quality- Standard- 0 RP

Defense Racial Traits- Duregar Immunities (Immune to paralysis, phantasms, and poisons, +2 to saves vs spells and SLAs)- 4 RP

Defense Racial Traits- Stability (+4 CMD vs bull rush or trip while standing on the ground)- 1 RP

Skill Racial Trait- Stonecunning (As the dwarf ability)- 1 RP

Skill Racial Trait- Greed (As the dwarf ability) -1 RP

Senses Racial Trait- Darkvision 60'- 2 RP

Total- 12 RP

What do you guys think?

Thanks NeoSeraphi. That is kind of what I thought. I like the duregar concept too. Lots of opportunity for role play there.

I would definitely like to play in a "reclaim the Worldwound" game.

Would you mind having Paladins be any Good? I would most likely be a Paladin of Iomedae, but Neutral Good in alignment.

As for the choices:

6th level is good. It allows you to take one level of a PrC if you so desire.

I'm not a fan of guns, but I have no problem with others using them.

Definitely ok with Hero Points. I think they work particularly well for this kind of game.

Custom Races are fine too. They can be plenty of fun.

Other House Rules I like:

Giving one or two bonus non-combat feats, to help flesh out your character. Things like Skill Focus, the double Skill feats, Exotic Weapon Prof, etc.

While Weapon and Armor prof do make you better in combat, they are utterly useless without the weapon or armor, and they tend to help make a character more interesting.

Allowing unlimited funds for non consumable, mundane gear. Things like kits, alchemical items, and masterwork weapons/armor do not count.

I've always been a fan of giving each PC a special magic item or boon ability customized to an individual. This grows with them as they level, and often isn't overly powerful but definitely flavorful. Not required, and if you say no, I'll still play, just something I find enhances the fun of the game.

Leadership is terrible as currently written. As feat it is both too powerful and not powerful enough.

First, for the cost of a feat slot, of which you get plenty, you gain a 2nd PC, with magic items and class abilities, etc.

However, the math to determine the number of followers is horrifically bad, especially at higher levels. One can not reasonably represent lords, kings, deities, etc. Even if you take the approach that the followers are an elite guard or personal retinue, the levels for them are often too low.

I'm up for just about anything as long as it's a good GM and a good group.

Monkeygod and I share similar ideas and preferences about mechanical and thematic styles.

Guns are pretty fun, but if they are common place, they pretty much make armour obsolete (they are against touch AC)

Leadership is flat out broken. You take a feat and get a second character and minions. At 9th level you can have a 7th level cohort and have them take leadership and get a cohort and followers. Rinse and repeat. You don't even have to use them in combat. Set up a shop and have them craft stuff either for you or to sell.

For free.

For a feat.

Or you could take something else to get +2 to trip attacks or whatever.

Liberty's Edge

Jelani, would you find it acceptable for me to take the Qinggong Monk archetype from Ultimate Magic? I don't plan on using it every time I am able, but there are a few things I'd like to swap for more ki-based powers (most notably Diamond Body, as immunity to poisons is a pretty useless class feature to a duregar).

Still open to characters?

Only just saw this.

I am keen. I have this Bladebound Hexcrafter Magus I have been dying.to play.

See profile for my Char.
(Str Ranger Here btw)

I would prefer 20 or 25 point buy. Especially if guns are involved.
Not opposed to guns though.
I would prefer to Start at level 6 or 7 with WBL.
Hero points? Never played with them. Sounds cool.
Custom races? OK.

Playing at the worldwound would rock!

*smirk* I always knew humans were under powered in comparison to many other races, glad paizo confirmed my suspicions ;) Too bad their my favorite.

I'll get a real recruitment thread up later, and then answer any questions after that.

It does not matter to me if we use hero points or not. If you do the custom races then I would check every race. They are ripe for abuse.

edit:If we do guns they should be on the "emerging guns" level since that is the default method.

Naaaah...The ARG rules for creating custom races are rock solid!

6 RP for +4 to Stealth and Ride checks, 4 RP for invisibility as a spell-like ability at will? It's very well thought out and balanced.

Some of the better optimisers found a way to take advantage of them. There is a thread dedicated to it. I will admit some of it was over reacting, but not all of it. :)
