You know what, I'm gonna put this whole thing under a spoiler so people who want to watch the trailer before they see my commentary can do so. Plus it discusses uh, future cast changes which are well publicized, but people get weird about that sometimes.

Spoiler:

*in a flat, toneless voice* More River Song and Daleks. Yay.

*goes to bang head on a wall for awhile*

I'm sorry, I know I'm being a typical whingey never happy with anything Doctor Who fan.

It DOES look interesting, and I am looking forward to seeing how the Ponds' story ends (not that I want it to, but it is well established and publicized news that they are leaving), but there are some aspects of the Whoniverse I REALLY wish they would just let rest awhile. The whole point of Doctor Who is that you have a madman in a box who can go literally ANYWHERE you can imagine, and they just keep revisiting the same damn characters and creatures over and over and over again while extremely seldom adding anything new or interesting to the cycle. What's the point of having a premise where quite truly ANYTHING can happen if you just start repeating yourself over and over and over again?

The Daleks especially. I really wish the Nation Estate had stuck to their guns and not given NuWho access to the IP, like they originally planned to. They have even been more horribly overused by the new series than the old series, and that's saying something. After the second Dalek story in the series (Dalek Invasion of Earth in 1965) I can count on my hand the number of Dalek stories that were truly well written, innovative, and brought something new or genuinely entertaining beyond just watching a bunch of unscary pepperpots shouting "Exterminate!" (3: Genesis of, Remembrance of, and Dalek).

Gah. Sorry, did not mean to go on a rant. Thanks for the link, and I do hope between the same-old, same-old, boring villains, and the Mary Sue who will not GO THE HELL AWAY, I really hope the new season has some brilliant stuff for us to enjoy.

Spoiler:

I don't want the Daleks to go away completely, but they really could use a year or two off. Completely off, not just showing up in a minor way like they did in series 5 or the specials. NO DALEKS.

At any rate, at least Moffat's Mary Sue that will not GO THE HELL AWAY is slightly more palatable than RTD's Mary Sue that we finally got rid of.

People seem convinced that Amy and Rory's exit will involve Amy dying and Rory leaving. It might actually be more interesting if it went the other way...Rory dies (but for real :P ) and his death makes Amy realize just how dangerous it is traveling with the Doctor. The only problem with that is that it's firmly established that the Grim Reaper is Rory's little b+&*~.

Spoiler:

Yes, the Daleks don't need to go away forever and ever, but we could really use a long break from them--so that when their comeback rolls around, it's actually interesting rather than, "Well, of course there's a big scene with a million Daleks, whatever." The Daleks CAN be well used--the premise behind their creation is brilliant! They just degenerate (DE-GEN-ER-ATE!) quickly into blandness when overused.

Fair enough, there are more irritating Sues in Who than River. :) But she also needs a freaking rest. Especially since I felt like her arc came to a really nice close. I mean at this point, we've seen most of her birth, life, and death, what else is there? And more to the point, what else is there that could possibly be new without being a ridiculously over dramatic plot twist?

I kind of just want Amy and Rory to look at stuff and say, "You know what, this has been awesome, but it's time to go home." Yeah, I'm sure we'll get some kind of character death. And I agree with you, I think a death of Rory (not that I want him to die) would be more narratively interesting, in part because he has cheated death so often.

Grand Lodge

I have had a crush on Alex Kingston since she first appeared on ER. So more River Song is a very good thing for me. Is it Autumn yet?

Cheers,

Mazra

I want more Daleks. I just want them NOT to be the invincible ones created in the last few years. Bring back ones that could be destroyed with a well placed shot. Take away the flying ability and if they do fly its because of a ship. Bring back the heavy weapon dalek and the black/red/white daleks.

Bring back the Doctors granddaughter from the very old series or at least do an episode where the current dr finds her.

I agree. I liked them as formidable soldiers, but not invincible. Although I am okay with the levitation (which was introduced in the old series), as they don't seem very maneuverable.

I so very hope that will be part of the 50th anniversary plans. Carole Ann Ford is alive and well and I'd love to see her in Dr. Who one more time--and give her an awesome script.
