Rolling vs Point Buy: The Game!

Forum Games

Here's how you play.

1. Roll the dice and get a set of stats.
2. Figure out what character class you would make with the rolls you end up with.
3. Take that character class and generate a set of stats using 20 Point Buy.
4. Compare!

I'll give it a try. I will use 4d6 drop lowest. (If you know how to format this so it does it automatically, let me know!) But you can use whatever you want.

4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 3) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 2) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 5) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 3) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 5) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 6) = 14

The Exchange

4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 2) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 5) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3, 6) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 1) = 6
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 1) = 8
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 3) = 16

Okay, that really sucks. I'll make a Human Rogue.

Str: 10
Dex: 15 (+2 for race)
Con: 11
Int: 9
Wis: 10
Cha: 9

This is Joe the Mediocre Rogue. He is not very interesting. Actually he is pretty unexceptional in every way. His main advantage as a Rogue is his forgettableness.

Now for the Point Buy:

Str: 12
Dex: 19 (+2 for race)
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 12
Cha: 8

Tried to maintain the Joe Average theme he has going, only now he is quite talented as a Rogue.

It looks like you forgot to subtract the lowest die. You would actually have: 10, 16, 14, 5, 7, 13.

Trying again to see if I can get something more interesting.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 6) = 21
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 6) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 3) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 3) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 5) = 16

WOOT! There we go! Let's try a Human Strength Monk.

Str: 20 (+2 race)
Dex: 14
Con: 14
Int: 11
Wis: 16
Cha: 9

Pretty kick-butt. I think Point Buy will be disappointing.

Str: 17 (+2 race)
Dex: 14
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 14
Cha: 8

Let's do this!

Go, Dice Roll!

Big money! Big money!

Rolled Stats:
STR4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 1) = 13=12
CON4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 5) = 14=13+2 racial
DEX4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 2) = 13=12
INT4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 4) = 16=13
WIS4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 6) = 13=11
CHA4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 1, 3) = 9=8

Human Commoner

Point Buy:
STR= 14 = 5/20
DEX= 14 = 10/20
CON= 16 = 15/20 (+2 racial)
INT= 14 = 20/20
WIS= 12 = 22/20
CHA= 08 = 20/20

Well...
End result
STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHA
Roll:12/13/14/13/11/8
Buy:14/12/15/13/11/8

The Exchange

You're right. I missed that part. Heh.

YOU GOT A 21?!?!

Another try!

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 3) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 5) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 4) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 2) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 4) = 12

Ugh. Oh well. Halfling Bard!

Str: 9 (-2 racial)
Dex: 15 (+2 racial)
Con: 13
Int: 11
Wis: 8
Cha: 16 (+2 racial)

Point Buy:

Str: 10 (-2 racial)
Dex: 16 (+2 racial)
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 18 (+2 racial)
