No love for the Universalist mage?

The 3.5 prestige class Mage Lord always left me enamored of the idea of Spontaneously casting spells that you have Spell Mastery for and any other method of extending the utility of Spell Mastery.

Give a Universalist the ability to swap out one spell of each spell level for one he has Spell Mastery applied to.

Fewer spells/day but it further plays up the versatility of the Universalist.

The Arcane Crafter is quite good and with the right sort of DM (and plenty of downtime) they could be very potent.

I personally would go back to banning access to opposition spells. It was fairer and led to better game balance in my opinion.
