Awesome, I was worried that was the final incarnation. Yes its the Alpha of Characterforge, when you download the zip it has no install info. Looking good so far!

I've added a new Alpha version today. I just removed the old one, and added the new one, same name. Once we are out of Alpha I'll go about keeping the older files.

I'm looking for some feed back, please. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Let us talk about function. Work flow, and what you want/expect from this. If no one says anything I'm just going to go with the crazy in my head. =P

I like how this is set up, and it at least seems like all I'm looking for is set up to be implemented, even if it isn't there yet (it is an alpha, after all). Really, the only ugly I have is this weird display error (on a Windows 7 32-bit system) I'm not sure how best to describe it - I hope this link works: Showing the race tab.

The leaking tables to the right show up on every tab, but the 'Combat Maneuver' one in the editing/display area only shows up on the Race tab.

Looks good.

Pretty much as long as I can build a character on it and print it out then that's all I need :)

I don't do a lot of custom or Gestalt - I use it for PFS characters and helping my fellow players build theirs too! :)

The table leak is totally me. I have them all showing right now so I can see what is getting filled and what isn't. =P

I'll offer my thanks for the sheet and from most of the people in my gaming group. We love the sheet! Your work is appreciated.

I rely on the sheet way too much. I tried to create one of the new classes recently with pencil and paper and well I wrote down a few things and then...it's almost like I have lost the ability to do so! Heheh.

I'm going to download the alpha soon and give some input.

As for the new classes I'm wondering if we could just have say 8 different versions of the latest sheet 7.4 or whatever it is? However, we use the custom class entry to put each one in? (And it would be done by users of the sheet not you as you're on to the new sheet!) Granted that still screws you for archetypes. Ugh maybe that's a terrible idea?

What other sheets are people using in the meantime that have a decent amount of the new stuff?

I think I'm going to keep with 7.4 and just add custom classes into it. Maybe I can upload them?

Okay so I downloaded it.

So far so good. Feels so fast!

Looks like you've eliminated a lot of scrolling with the drop down list buttons and with all the tabs visible on the page it helps.

I guess the obvious is making the GUI full screen without scrolling.

Yay! :)

Sovereign Court

I like the look of it. Just to make sure it's not just my PC burping: it's normal that I can't select race and class just yet right?

I can select both. Granted not all races work I know cat person causes an error. Not sure what classes don't work.

Lemartes wrote:

It might just be you. Because you should be able to select at least the core races. I have not tested any other than those.

One issue I keep running into, and am TRYING to fix is anything with a 's in it. UGH. But I'm glad you are at least looking at it.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/characterforge/

I'm moving the files to the new URL. Ive been getting messages from people on it thinking it is the main product. So from now on all characterForge updates can be found there.

I've added a new alpha build to
https://sourceforge.net/projects/characterforge/

It should deal with some of the race selection issues. Also I've added an example of what the print files will look like.

Right now there isn't anyway to print them, BUT if you find the "Output" directory, you could print them at 35% Shrink.

You misread me. I can select core races. :)

I ran it last night on Windows 7; I don't get a drop-down for races...

Purple Dragon Knight wrote:

If race dropdown is blank, then there is some kind of issue with your system reading the data tables. Under Options on the 'Settings' Tab, try hitting 'Default' and then 'Apply', watch the green bar as the sheet loads. If it goes all the way to the end, then there is a load issue.

If anyone is looking to contribute, I could use someone to enter the missing weapon text. I left a lot of it out to save space. Now I don't need to worry about space as much. Format is easy,

<weaponName>Alchemist's Bomb</weaponName>
<weaponSpecial>Splash</weaponSpecial>
<weaponText> </weaponText>
<sourceMain>PFAPG</sourceMain>
<sourceSub> </sourceSub>
<sourcePage>26</sourcePage>

An excel sheet with those column headers. Anything from the weapons tab (old sheet) that doesn't have text.

Those of you who know XML can also just load those files into Excel as well.

Anyway, let me know, and thank you.

OK, so I went and updated the weapon info myself. =P

Hi ya Bluecanary: I can't seem to get Scoreforge to do any Animal Companions for Rangers. Using the latest version. No luck at all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Suggestion on weapon usage: I would REALLY want to see a total revamp on this. Something like a custom dialog that only enables the valid options. In the dialog, you would see all the different options, much like the "Buffs" tab, just a lot smaller.

The main reason is to allow adding some restrictions on options such as class, level, feats, etc, and to support more than two "uses". "Handedness" would be one separate option (dropdown or radio group), if the weapon supports multiple handedness (I think light weapons do not). Then a section for special attacks (FoB, PBS, et al), when you meet the prereqs.

Also, if you are feeling especially ambitious, improving the interface for general equipment such that you don't have to edit your inventory right on the character sheet, but inside some other tab. This might allow an easier time with containers, since the user won't need to worry about shifting lines down to add more room (or similar sheet logistical acrobatics).

Did something happen to character forge? I can't seem to find it anymore.

First, let me say that I do love sCoreForge, it has a lot of awesome options. However I'm kind of stumped on how to get a custom race to load. Any advice would be welcome.

Hello Bluecanary,
I have used sCoreForge forever and have always enjoyed it, my players as well. I have looked at the new alpha sheet and like where it is going. I would love to help. Please let me know what I can do.

I'm hoping to come up with something that will give you a lot more flexible. In a best case, you would be able to set almost every option. The question is how to build the UI for this option.

hi bluecanary!

long-time user of your excellent Excel sheet here... could you provide a link to the new stuff you're doing? I have tried to scroll through this thread a few times here but haven't been able to download it or use it properly... i'm getting old (excuse I know) and my computer skills are sadly lacking in comparison to the median ability of most whipper snappers on these boards... :P

(oh, and let me know if your sheet has special computer requirements... Windows 7 here...)

My current Alpha is running from here. I haven't posted a new update in a while, because I got crazy busy IRL. I'm working on changing the weapons page to add more then two use types (thank you Gherrick), as well as more than 5 magic enhancement types.

I don't know what the PC requirements are yet, I have not done any benchmarks on it yet. I know it will run on Windows 7, and Windows 8.

I might not be able to help much with the coding, but I can certainly do busywork of typing lists like the weapons thing you were looking for. Is there anything I can do to help? Also, depending on what the coding is, I may be able to help with it as well. What can I do?

I'm getting a crash on startup with CharacterForge (which probably ought to have it's own thread here now that it's seperated as a project)

Despite the error on startup, the bits and pieces of the interface that I've been able to play with are GREAT. It's a much welcome step up from the old excel sheet. Less lag, less scrolling, more vibrant information (when selecting character archetypes, having ineligible ones go red is awesome)

Unfortunately due to the error on load (which has already been documented on the Sourceforge page) I'm unable to really get a full sense of how the whole system works together since only the first 3 tabs load information, and even those tabs are messed up.

I know how much I love sCoreForge, so if this new option is anything REMOTELY close to that level of detail I'll be happy with it!

Hello, I was just wondering if there has been any work on this project since last November? I havent' been able to get it to work on my laptop running Windows 8. It crashes on startup for some reason. I loved the Excel versions, though I could see that it was getting a bit too much for Excel to handle. But it was the most indepth PF character sheet program out there.

I hope a workable version can come out soon. Appreciate the hard work.

A new version using a different platform is being worked on. The alpha version can be found here.

If you don't want to use that, then just download one of the previous excel versions until you find one that works. These can be found here.

That's actually the version I was talking about. It looks like the last alpha version is from November. When I try to open it I get a message saying that there were some sort of problems. If I ignore them, it does open, but none of the data files get loaded.

Any idea when a beta version is coming out???

Remeber, this is a project by a single person working on it when ever he has time, and he has a full time job and other life things to do as well. While some of us have donated our time or money to support him, it is still nearly 100% his project and his time that he has chosen to give out for free.

Please do not try to look this gift horse in the mouth. It will come out when it comes out. That's the best any of us can expect.

Until then, please feel free to use one of the older excel versions. Most of them still work really well (pretty much all but a couple of the most recent). Nearly all of the previous excel versions have a tab available for custom classes and archetypes, so you could add one of the new classes if it isn't available yet. And it is not that difficult to figure out how Blue Canary programmed the excel versions in order for you to modify it to add new feats, skills, class features, etc...

Several of us still try to give out support for the excel versions, so if you have questions, feel free to ask.

If any of this is unacceptable to you, please feel free to use one of a myriad of other character sheets, or pay money to the professional character generators, like Hero Lab (which is an excellent program).

I have not forgotten you all! Real life has come a calling. The project I am working on is about to launch. So I am working nights, and weekends. I started an update for the weapons tab, but as I said, life is slowing this all down.

This may seem like a stupid question, but I have looked all over a myriad forums and can't seem to figure it out. Once you create a custom class, how do you actually APPLY the custom class to your character?

Also, did nobody ever set up a place for people to post up their own custom work?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE sCoreForge. However, starting a new Investigator has made me realize just how much I relied on it.

Tac-One wrote:

It's not a stupid question at all. It took me a bit to figure it out the first time I used it. When you select your class in the level tab, you have to scroll all the way down (it's quite a ways) to get to the custom classes.

Tac-One wrote:

I don't think so. I've never seen one.

Random one, how do I create more Ioun stone slots - some of my characters are a bit 'bling' and running more than three rocks :p

Shifty wrote:

I've never actually tried to create a magic item. However, there are a few things you could do.

See if you have a "Magical Adjustment" tab and you can directly add your bonuses there. This is the quick and dirty way of doing it; you can't actually select a new ioun stone, but you can get the bonuses here.

The more difficult way is to do the following:

Right click the tabs and select the "unhide" button. Here, you'll see a long list of various tabs that you can unhide and view. There's one called "Magical Item Descriptions." Unhide that one and see if you can figure out how to add a new magic item (it shouldn't be that difficult).

Cool, I see how that works.

Now I just need more spaces to track the bajillion loaded.

Maybe just create custom items that are two Ioun stone descriptors or something...

"A + B" so it effectively loads two at a time. Handy for the smaller +skill rocks.

Also, Does anybody know how to input Staff's, Wands and and the like into the magic items tab and to get them to show up on the sheet ??

Any help is much appreciated ...

Now I haven't looked at the sheet to trouble shoot this, but it may be possible that your items just made it to the next character sheet. Did you check character sheet tabs 2 through 4? If you don't see them, right click on the tabs and select "unhide."

I'll be able to open up the program later tonight to see what's going on.

Thanks Bookrat,

Let me re-phrase the question. How do/does one input a Staff, Rod, Wand , etc. into -> Scoreforge ????

Getting an unhandled exception whose details tell me a series of values is unrecognizable. Anyone have a fix?

Sorry death knight, I was never able to get to my computer. And then I forgot. Having toddlers running around the house does this to me. I'll try to get to it today.

Synergex, can you provide more details?

Deathknight69 wrote:

OK, I got it. Go to the Magic Equip tab. If you don't see it then right click on the tabs and select "Unhide." Then find the tab "Magic Equip" and unhide that tab.

Once on that tab, see if your particular item shows up in one of these two pull-down locations: Non-Slot Items or Additional Magic Items.

If it does not, then scroll slightly to the right and you'll see a section for Custom Magic Items. You can enter in all the details of any magic item you want there. It's important to state which slot it takes up so the program knows which pull-down menu to place your custom item.

Once you're done, select the appropriate pull-down menu and scroll to the end of the list of items and you'll see a category for custom items. Once you select that, then it will show up on your character sheet (Character Sheet II or beyondl; you may have to unhide some of these).

If you want to go further, there are two other tabs you can unhide: Magic Items Lists and Magic Items Definitions. Magic Items list is pretty self explanatory once you see it. I haven't figured out what the Magic Items Definitions tab does yet, because I've never taken the time to look at it - I've been able to get everything I want straight from the Magic Equip tab.

I'm using version 6.4.0.2 for this discussion (I picked a version randomly).

Let me know if this helps and answers your question; if not, please elaborate some more and I'll see what I can do to assist.

I'll have to look more into t later, but my immediate gut feeling is that this is an error with excel versions. Which version of excel are you using? Most of this program was written on excel 2003, and I've had no issues with 2010. But I've seen programming issues with 2013; and if you're using an excel version that is 2013 or more recent, this error may be popping up because of that.

We've seen this once before. When I first purchased 2013, I was getting errors with sCoreForge, but I don't remember the specific error or if what you're seeing was the same thing. I'll try to look into it more later on.

For now, if you can get a copy of excel 2010 or earlier, try that. Also try one of the older versions of sCoreForge. The most recent versions were bugging out and unusable. I use 6.4, but if memory serves correct, something before 7.0 should be fine. Try different versions until you find one that works.

I have Excel 2010, but I'm trying to open CharacterForge, which looks like a visual basic application (unless I'm mistaken?) I already have and can open sCoreForge 7.4.0.1 but it does not have enough of the current character options to be useful to me I was hoping this was an updated program with more recent books included.

Hello, I was just going to post this same error message that I'm also getting. I am using Excel 2013.

Thanks
