Multi Classing

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

So I had a question about Multi Classing in Pathfinder. I am currently a level two Paladin, and was thinking of classing into a Summoner on my next level. But I had a few questions. I apologize if the answers are in the book, I do not have time to search for the answers.

1. Considering the Paladin class can wear Heavy armor, and the Summoner class can not, I was wondering if I would have to strip off armor, to meet the needs of the Summoner class, to use Summoner spells? Can I run around with heavy armor, and a martial weapon, because I am a Paladin?

2. Spells that effect level, are they based on character level, or class level?

These are all the questions I have for the time being. Thanks in advance for answering them, I appreciate it.

1. You are free to wear the heavy armor, but as a Summoner your arcane spells will have a chance of failure based on the armor (in the armor stat block it says what percentage). You also keep your weapon proficiency.

2. Any spell that references level is talking about your class level (in summoner in this case) unless it specifically says otherwise. So, if you multi into Summoner, you'll be casting spells as a level 1 Summoner, with a caster level of 1.

This is what I thought. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. :P Happy gaming.

Also was wondering. When I class into something else, do I gain their level one hit die, as well as their fort, reflex, and will save bonuses? So if my Paladin has a fort save of 7, and the Summoner gets a 2 fort save, does the new number become 9???

Plus do I gain all the class skills of a Summoner, and a Paladin?

Yes.

Thank you.

When you multiclass into Summoner, you gain 5 HP, not 8 (plus CON & Toughness, as applicable). You get maximum HP for your first character level only.

You dont' get the favored class bonus (+1 hp or skill point, or a racial thing) as well, you only get the +3 for being a class skill once per skill, so diplomacy, if from both, only gives +3, not +6.

Okay. Also, I was reading over my books, and for archtypes, multi classing, and prestige, there does not seem to be a limit as to how many times you can do this, so long as you meet the requirement for each class, archtype, or prestige. Is this true, but do the GM's discretion?

There is no rules limit as to how often you can multi-class, but there are practical limits. If you combine classes that do not synergize well, you will have a weaker character than if you stuck to a single class.

The paladin/summoner has some serious problems. While both classes value high charisma, that is their only synergy. A paladin is a heavily armored melee combatant, but a summoner is a spellcaster whose casting is adversely affected by wearing medium or heavy armor or carrying a shield. So you can go with the heavy armor and shield and have many of your spells fail, or you can limit yourself to light armor and no shield and not be as good a tank. Neither class does much to support the features of the other.

If you must multi-class, you should either be aiming for a prestige class that helps synergize the two classes or only "dip" into one class. In the case of a paladin/summoner, a couple of paladin levels are enough to give you a charisma bonus to all saves -- more would be a waste. Dipping into the summoner class is generally pointless.

One other thing -- if you know in advance that you are going to start out with a level or two in one class and then take all future levels in another class, you are allowed to designate the second class as your favored class and forego any favored class bonus for your first two levels; you do not have to start out in your favored class.

hm, there was a comic about a goblin multiclassing in every class, it was about level 18 or so, but had only 1 level of each class XD

I would imagine you would become pretty strong at the lower levels, but as you started stacking more and more, and lost on the bonuses you would have gained as a single level twenty character, you would slowly become weaker.

I actually have a Paladin 2/Summoner 12 in one of the games I'm running. Specifically for the save bonus and the occasional detect evil.

It is important to note that Arcane Spell Faliure only applies to spells, with Somatic components, the S on that line. While this is most spells there are ways to reduce or even get rid of that failure. The first is the Still Spell meta magic feat. While it does bump up the level of your spells, at later levels it may be worth it when the magic properties of heavy armor outweigh the defensive spells you use to replace it.

The second is to find long lasting spells and cast them while not wearing your armor.

A third are the Arcane Armor feats which simple drop the overall % chance of failure while in armor.
