PFS online

Local Play

I'm just wondering where the best places to find online PFS events would be? I'm a member of a google group but there aren't a lot of events that are posted.

Shadow Lodge 1/5

Which google group, is it the collective?

If so, how do you play online, which VTT or method do you use? I can tell you that Maptools is popular, as well as some others, but personally I'm not willing to spend the time needed to keep characters up to date amoung a bunch of different programs and have picked FGII for my use as it supports a number of different systems. I will most likely play in Paizo Gamespace, but I don't know about running in it yet.

If you use Fantasy Grounds II, they have a growing collection of players and GMs and they have given us a section of their Messageboards as well adjusting their calendar so that if titled right, they group together on their calendar. If you want to find out about them, you can become a member on their messageboards without being a customer. There was a Yahoo Group for FGII but that migrated to the FGII site when they removed the App beta stuff making it much harder to schedule games and such.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but...

Once I move and get settled I'm planning on re-starting up an IRC (internet relay chat) system for RPGs online that I used to run, and setting up for PFS play so people can literally log on whenever they want and try to find a GM and a party to run a scenario.

Once I pass my thesis defense in a few days and move a few days after that (assuming I don't go insane first) I'll post more :)

Dotting...I'd love to get in on that.

Liberty's Edge

Dotting as well...

me too!!

I know that feel, bro. *hugs*

Yes, I joined the google group The Collective. I really liked the game I played with maptools.

I looked at FantasyGrounds and will probably download it to expand my options. If I'm not planning on being a GM can I get by with the free version?

Canis, I would be interested in anything that can get me playing more Pathfinder.

I'm interested, as well.

Look for my post in just over 1 week then :) Here's hoping my idea works out how I'm imagining it!

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

Ok, for those who were following this thread:

Following a local "alpha test" with people I know who are very familiar with IRC, I think I've gotten things settled enough to do an "beta test" of what I've got in mind for this setup for general PFS play (i.e. people who haven't done RPGs via IRC before).

I am looking for 4-6 volunteers to help me run "IRC Test #2" with the PFS Quest "Ambush in Absalom" - 0 xp, 0 gp, 0 pp, but it's *very* short and has a few boons for those who play. It's 1-5 so subtier 1-2 or 4-5 are both possible depending on who wants in.

Note that this will be a "beta test" to make sure the IRC getup I've got going will work, so there might be some slow moments, but I don't think too many.

If this works how I'm hoping, the whole thing will take less than 2 hours total, and will give me all I need to "write a guide" on how to use IRC for PFS play, which I can then put up online and throw it open for everyone to use as they wish.

I'd like to aim for tomorrow (Wednesday) evening for the trial run of this. I know lots of people are going to GenCon early so that might not fit for everyone, but I only need a minimum legal table for the test-run.

If you're interested, post here, and I'll drop you a message in private with how to log on and such (if you're already familiar with mIRC or Mibbit, this will seem super easy to you - if you're not, you'll pick it up in about 5 minutes, I promise).

Hope to hear from people who are interested!

What timezone are you? I'm Pacific so GMT -8

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

Ah sorry about that - I'm EST (GMT -5), and was thinking about a start-time in the vicinity of 8 or 9pm.

Ahh afraid I'll have to bow out of this beta test! Thanks though...look forward to your guide!

I'm in if you're taking new players. This would be my first game of Pathfinder, but I'm pretty fluent in IIRC / Vent and all the usual online gaming suspects.

Lemme know if you've got room and what I need to set up beforehand.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

Ronin, so far I've got you plus one other, so if we get 2 others we'll be good to go. I'll send you a private message with the server/room details.

Make sure you've got your character sheet squared away in some kind of format that I can view online (even if it's just scanning it in and emailing it as a jpg).

See you later!

Will do.

Hey man, Im not gonna be able to get you my sheet by tonight. My scanner broke, sorry. Good luck with your game.

No prob - looks like I'll push the beta test out after GenCon.

Any news?

Fantasy Grounds II is a good way to jump into Pathfinder. Although the VTT is not free, if you can find a GM that has an Ultimate Licence, the free version will still work for you.

I'm thinking about trying to re-organize a playtest sometime this weekend or early next week for this.

If people are interested, drop me a line so I know how many people I'm looking at?

Thanks!

What exactly would I need to install on my computer to participate ?

Thanks

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

If I've done it right, nothing :)

If you want to test to see if you can access it:

  • Go to http://darkmyst.org
  • Click "chat now"
  • Pick a nickname (if you pick one that someone else is using or has "registered" you may be forced to pick a new one once you log in)
  • Change the "channel" to #PFS-Test
  • Log on

If the screen takes you to a chat-room like thing but the only people in the room are you and "ChanServ" that means it's working fine (or more people if I'm there as Dire or GM_Dire and/or if there are other people testing it too).

If that works fine, you can run the whole thing through your web browser. If you'd rather not, you can look up mIRC or other IRC (Internet Relay Chat) programs.

So far I've got 2 people lined up for this coming Sunday - 4 makes a party, so if you're reading this and want to try it out, drop me a line! :)

URL works for me. Didn't see "ChatServ", but otherwise I assume the thing was working correctly

I'd consider running something on roll20.net if anyone is interested.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

So far only 2 for a Sunday (Aug 26) playtest... so rather than try to push it, how about anyone interested drops me a line in private message and once there are enough people willing to try a playtest, I'll find a time that works for everyone.

Thanks!

Ok, time for an all-call.

I'm looking to get a table of 4-6 together sometime in the next few days to test out the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) text-based setting for PFS Online play.

Advantages of trying to play PFS Online with IRC

  • No software required
  • No webcam/microphone required
  • Can be done entirely through a web-browser
  • Dice-rolling is visible to all
  • In-Character and Out-of-Character talk are kept in separate channels for clarity
  • Allows for the possibility of a "soft roleplay" channel to be created where PFS players can "hang out in character" and roleplay, so long as all PFS rules are adhered to and no scenario-spoilers are given during roleplay.

Disadvantages of trying to play PFS Online with IRC

  • No webcam/microphones, so you have to give your fellow players some time to type replies
  • Possibility of disconnection from a server could result in small game delays
  • Players unfamiliar with text-based RPGs might have a little learning curve as to how to "describe character actions" (similar to PbP though, and many of the same principles apply).

So, in short, contact me if you're interested, and when you drop me a line let me know what days/nights/times are often best for you, and we'll go from there.

Thanks very much and hope to game with you soon!

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

For Play-by-Post (PbP) as well as Online gamers, this post is a pretty good one for the "how to" aspect of things. On IRC there are very easy ways to do different fonts/colors, including a built-in "describe character actions" function called /me, but these concepts are very very similar:

DH's Guide to Play By Post gaming

Hope you find it as useful as I have!

Would online/PbP games count towards my official PFS character, or would they just be sideline games for fun? I know, if I were a good person I would just be happy to get in ANY gaming time for any reason, but there's something about tracking every session so everyone can see. So alluring!...

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

They can count for Chronicles, Rosvenyr, as long as all the other rules for PFS are followed.

2/5

I did the Intro Trilogy using Skype and Maptools. It's a very effective way to run PFS online. The only issue is that generally players need to have scanners and printers for sending/recieving the chronicle sheets...especially the GM. However, it can be a lot of fun!

Ros, I also do Pbp, and yes, both forms do count for credit.

Some method of getting identifying marks for the GM on the chronicle is generally sufficient, historically. GMs who want to have a scanned stack of my chronicles for me to play are GMs I won't be bothered with - that's too much like work I could be doing to make cool terrain or prep another adventure for people to play.

When I'm doing chronicles, I use a PDF slicing tool that lets me get a PDF I can draw on (I miss the LG AR and adventure are separate documents model).

I don't like IRC for online play - typing increases turn times a lot in combat, for one, and you need some other method for sharing a combat grid.

I've done a bit of GMing in MapTool and a LOT in OpenRPG (I don't regret not going back that direction, save for the lobby hangout...)

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

I'm running a "Citadel of Flame" PbP right now. When we're finished, I'm planning to mail the players a Chronicle sheet. You know, with envelopes and stamps.

That might not work out so well with players in China, NZ, AU, and the UK and a GM in the US.

2/5

Whoa...what are these "Stamps" you speak of?

2/5

Yeah, Tetujin, I'm one of those that require the 'scanned' stacks as well as character sheets....we are required by PFS guidelines to look over that stuff and eyeball it for accuracy. The nice thing is, if you're just playing online, chances are you have PDFs of all your sheets mailed to you from OTHER Gms. :) Alernatively, if you have a nice phone camara, you could probably just take picture and send them as JPGs. Once you've done a particular chronicle sheet, you don't have to do it again...just keep sheets for a character in a folder and add to that.

I bought a printer/scanner combo at amazon for $150. It has a feeder to make scanning multiple pages MUCH easier. This is an essential tool for people serious about playing online games. It seems like a chunk of change, but keep in mind, driving to games isn't exactly cheap either. (Wear/tear & Gas avearges $.40/mile). It may take two dozen games, but that scanner deal WILL eventually pay for itself!

Pathfinder Maps Subscriber

I still have my old scanner somewhere. I unplugged it before a hardware rebuild some time ago and just never plugged it back in again. It should still work if I can find the software for it.

EDIT: If that fails, I know the copier/printer at work can be a scanner too, but that requires me going into work ...
