Can't help chuckling at this. "Usually typically means always." Hehehe. :)

You're welcome spellcasters, goodbye table variance!

I knew I knew what usually meant.

any chance we can find out what a wizard can sell his spellbook for?

My wife has a Wizard who picked up a Blessed book, and now has two books. She was wondering if she could recover anything from selling off her (now extra) book - but when we posted on this before, it was put off till later.

This is a welcome change. I just had one question regarding the phrase "In the rare instance". Should my wizard wish to, at the end of a scenario taking place in Absalom, track down a wizard to learn spell x, is that possible? Alternatively, does 'rare instance' mean that this will only be permissible if the scenario specifically has a friendly NPC wizard?

Given that PCs are able to go pretty much wherever they want in between scenarios in order to shop, I see no reason PCs couldn't just by spells between scenarios at the same Absalom Magic-Mart they're buying their cloaks and belts and headbands and rings.

But that does make one curious about the "in the rare instance" line, doesn't it? Guess we'll need Mike to chime in on that.

Mike chimed in: wizards and other spellbookians rejoice.

If she's smart, she'll keep it as a backup spare.

Dark Archive 4/5

It would be a good idea to say "I keep my backup spellbook at __________", where the blank is either the Grand Lodge or whatever boon dwelling you may have purchased. This is just in case of a TPK that results in your body, but not necessarily all your gear, being recovered.

why?

she is one adventure from retirement - and has been waiting on a reply sense level 7.

Do you know of any need for a back-up spell book? in any adventure? I have several other casters that use books - you would advise me to create back-up books then? (realizing the cost of just scribing them gets to be a lot.)

It might be interesting to see this happen - but then every other book using class PC would be a bit upset... I don't think it's very likely to happen, so perhaps your comment was in jest? (hard to tell over the internet when someone is joking).

(and anyway - my Rogue/Wiz often adventures with her - and she would have access to his - which has a lot more in it than her old book.)

I have never had a TPK - does all the players gear get lost then? how do they play without gear? Are you saying that if I TPK a table, I need to mark their gear lost??!! I am not sure if I would be comfortable doing that. I need to go check the rules for this (season 4 scenarios being what they are, I'm fear I may have a TPK ahead of me as a judge and will need to know.)

I just want to know now, if we were told to buy scrolls to get extra spells for our spellbooks by our event coordinators, do we now get a refund of the difference between the scroll cost and the CRB cost of buying the spell from an NPC wizard?

I'm presuming not since they were following the rules as they existed.

And if you both lose your books from a party wide calamity?

goodness... what's with this? She just wants to sell her old spell book, much like a fighter might sell old armor after he upgrades to better armor. She has a spell book that she had up until she was 7th level (she is 11&2/3 now) - but replaced with a Blessed book at that point. When she asked about selling it before, Mr. Moreland posted that there were no rules at that time to cover selling it.

In answer to your question, LazarX, yes, if both my wife's 11th level Wizard and my 8th level Rogue/wizard loose thier books, it will be very hard on her (less so to me, as my Rogue is only a 1st level wizard - with 6th level spells in his book). Loosing her 11th level book alone would be tough. In order to "re-build" her book she would have to adventure with another high level wizard - perhaps she could then adventure with my son's 12th level wizard. Or maybe with my 7th level Mystic Thierge. No, wait - it would have to be with the 12th level, as she would be 12th level then.

Nosig, if you were at my table, this is what I'd allow:

She could sell her spellbook for half the cost she spent scribing it.

In other words:

She spent no gold on starting spells and the free spells she got as she leveled up.

Then you show me the chronicle notations for every other spell she scribed and how much she spent for those. Divide by 2.

That's what I'd give you for selling the spellbook.

As I mentioned in my reply to your email last night, it isnt grandfathered in. It starts from yesterday forward.

and that's what we originally figured. but when we asked before, there was a lot of different responses, and the Mr. Moreland said that it could not be sold "at this time". Sense then, I also have had a PC pick up a Blessed Book, so now I've got an interest in selling an old Spellbook. Just wondering if there is an established procedure for doing this yet.

You may sell it back for half, but only for the spells that were scribed and paid for, not that were gained for free through boons, gaining a level or any other means of gaining a spell for free.

Thank you sir. I would also expect that "sell it back for half" is half of the scribe cost - so if she got a discount to scribe the spell to the book (such as the Evoker Day Boon that let her scribe one spell for free) it would be half of what she paid (half of zero would be zero).

She should be able to just check her older chronicles and note where she scribed spells (the cost) to figure out the selling cost.

I would go so far as to say, that if the cost isn't reported on a chronicle sheet, you can't get half back for it.

Sorry, I'm writing this from work, didn't have time to check my email at home before I had to come in this morning.

On the plus side, it let's everyone else know your answer if they also had this particular question.

Thanks again.

Mike can you add this to your Compilation of message board clarifications for PFS Rulings?
