Daylight vs. Deeper Darkness

Rules Questions

So, I can counteract deeper darkness with daylight.

Say I'm fighting a Dark Creeper in a cave and his At-Will deeper darkness is inflicting sorrow unto the party. I use daylight and it negates the darkness, returning to "otherwise prevailing light conditions."

I have two questions:

1. Do mundane and lower-level magical light sources resume functioning in the negated area?

2. Since deeper darkness has a range of touch, does the Dark Stalker need to touch the object emanating the daylight spell to dispel it with deeper darkness? Should I pour my oil of daylight down the monk's pants, for they are the pants with the highest touch AC?

2a. Do parachute pants receive a bonus to AC against foes attempting to Touch This?

1. No, the only light that works within deeper darkness is a higher lv light spell. You could heighten a light spell to use a 4th lv slot, and that should negate all darkness until they use dispel magic on the light.

2. No, it means they just need to touch the object they want to emanate deeper darkness. Just casting deeper darkness (or daylight) while in or near an area affected by the other spell will cancel it out.

EDIT: This is taken from the description of the darkness spell.

Hmm, not convinced by either of those.

1 is how the deeper darkness normally works, but does that still apply when it's being negated by daylight? The darkness is clearly gone, but is the suppression effect still there?

In 2 you seem to be talking about the negation. If both spells are already negating each other, a new deeper darkness will change nothing, but dispelling the daylight will plunge us back into inky blackness.

2a: Yes, but its more than the pants themselves. The ability to utilize their full potential relies on entrance to a prestige class with secret entrance requirements.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

1. Yes, as per "otherwise prevailing light conditions".
2. Yes, but only to counter or dispel it. (Negating it goes by overlapping areas of effect.) And for the other, oh dear gods no. Try holding up some pants-like cloth to a really bright light, and then imagine that it's your monk's junk emitting the light. Do you really want that to happen??
2a. Yes, but only until hit. As a one-hit wondrous item, untouchable parachute pants quickly become an object of ridicule.

This is unclear. On the one hand, the area of effect still exists, and those light sources don't work "in an area of darkness". On the other hand, the "area" isn't exactly "of darkness" anymore.

I'm leaning toward "they work just fine, contributing to the ambient light level".

I believe so, unless rules for dispelling carry a special exception that I'm not aware of.

Depends on which you value more: survival or dignity.
