Staff magus and Weapon Specialization Quarterstaff

Rules Questions

A staff magus gets the quaterstaff master feat as a bonus feat.

You can take the feat Weapon Specialization in the quarterstaff even if you have no levels in fighter.

Does the magus still have to be level 4?

The requirement for WS is not level 4 and fighter but fighter 4th.
So if you drop the fighter requirement does the 4th level remain?

And if so is it class level or character level?

I would take it literally - drop the requirement for levels in fighter and you're left with no requirement regarding level. I don't think there's anything overpowered about getting WS:quarterstaff a couple levels sooner.

No requirements but Weapon Focus. It still means you're likely not picking it up until fifth level.

The staff magus gains Quarterstaff Mastery as a bonus feat, which means that he is not required to meet all the usual prerequisites.

There's a very cool feat right here, by the way, that happens to list the feat you're talking about as a prerequisite. Totally worth the 99 cents.

Human Staff Magus (Free Quarterstaff Mastgery).

Levle 1 feat Weapon Focus.
Human Bonus Feat Weapon Specialization.

You are specialized at level 1.... then change to whatever class you really wanted :)

How are you picking up Weapon Focus at level 1?

Weapon focus requires BAB +1. Magus doesn't have that til lvl 2. So you would have to take weapon focus at 3rd and then specialization at 5th. Unless of course you take fighter as your 3rd lvl then you could get both at 3rd.

I forgot about the BAB+1 for weapon focus, too.
My idea was building a staffmagus 2/ wood oracle x who would be something different but could do some nice damage with the specialization and shillelagh + spellstrike.
And with wood bond to mitigate the lost BAB.

Ouch. Good combo.

I like titan mauler barbarian/wood oracle better. Wield a large-sized club that shillelaghs for 3d6, 4d6 while enlarged. Make yourself immune to fatigue with the lame curse and you can use Furious Finish every time you Vital Strike as well (8d6 damage maximized to 64 + strength and bonuses).

Of course, metal oracle does it better with lead blades.

Doing some thread necro because it fits in:

A Staff magus can wield a normal quaterstaff onehanded.
Does that mean that he could wield a large one as a twohanded weapon?

I'm not saying that would be a clever thing to do, because of the penalties and the fact that by doing so he can't spellcombat anymore. But can he do it?

An oversized quarterstaff is not normal, so the ability doesn't apply.

Given that the ability doesn't apply, there's no reason he would treat a non-normal quarterstaff any differently.

Though Quarterstaff Master doesn't say normal, it just says you can wield a quarterstaff as a one-handed weapon. I think the best way to prevent a gargantuan quarterstaff being used as a one-handed weapon is to assume that you must be able to wield the quarterstaff in order for the feat to apply and let you wield it as a one-handed weapon. (IE: all normal size restrictions still apply)

Sczarni

the feat specifies that you have to be a level 4 fighter that said a magus at level 10 treats his level as half to qualify for fighter feats

If you plan on doing that, go with Magus 6 and get Broad Study then you can throw in spells from the cleric list, or Magus 7 and get the ability to use medium armor.
