Gunslinger and AoO

Advice

Dark Archive

I am going to be playing my first Gunslinger in Frog god Games Slumbering Tsar adventure path and I have a question.

I thought I heard or read somewhere that a feat or some other rule that would allow you to fire you gun while threatened and not provoke an AoO but for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere.

I know Point Blank Master does this but it requires Weapon Spec as a prerequisite and that in turn requires Fighter 4th.

Anyone?

Firing you gun and loading it provokes. so that is a 2 Feat investment to not get attacked. (if there is such a feat i cant remember there being one. )

Deft Shootist Deed in the Ultimate Combat book.

from SRD

Deft Shootist Deed (Grit)
You keep an eye out while focusing on your weapon, allowing you to avoid attacks while shooting and reloading firearms.

Prerequisites: Grit class feature or Amateur Gunslinger feat, Dodge, Mobility.

Benefit: As long as you have at least 1 grit point, you do not provoke attacks of opportunity when shooting or reloading a firearm.

There's always the Snap Shot feat chain- which lets you threaten up to 15 feet by level 9, and stops your shots from provoking- but that doesn't stop reloading from provoking AoOs.

Gunslinger feat from Pathfinder Campaign Setting prevents you from provoking with attacks, but unfortunately reloading still provokes... req. BAB 4, WF with any firearm.

I know that swift action spells don't provoke; is there a general rule that swift and free actions don't provoke? If so, using paper cartridges to reload as a free action would prevent OAs from reloading.

5ft steps will help.

This.

Also, Caydenite, IIRC, free and swift actions don't provoke.

So just getting your ranged weapon down to a free action exempts it from provoking AOO's?

So quick draw + throw weapons, Firearms with appropriate feats/cartridges, bows and crossbows; as long as it's a free action to reload they don't provoke?

I tried looking up the combat rules and it only says, loading a crossbow as a move action/full-round action provokes.

However for the firearm rules it states specifically, "Loading any firearm provokes attacks of opportunity." From the SRD

The feat is Deft Shootist, prerequisites are grit class feature or amateur gunslinger & mobility (dodge) pg 85 & 95 in the ultimate combat

I know deft shootist will stop your attacks and reloads with a firearm from provoking. I'm just curious about whether reloading as a free action provokes WITHOUT the feat. I'd love to get my gunslinger to drop dodge and mobility (the prereq's for Deft Shootist). They are feat starved as it is without forcing two pre-reqs.

Snap Shot only prevents you from provoking when you are making an AoO not when making a normal attack.

Sorry to necro, but how to avoid AoO as a gunslinger was something I could not remember how to do, so I was looking it up here and found this thread. Thanks for reminding me about Deft Shootist, and then as for the idea that crossbows do not provoke attacks of opportunity when reduced to a free action(reloading a normal bow does not and is already a free action) there is this...

Quote:

Rapid Reload (Combat)

Choose a type of crossbow (hand, light, heavy) or a single type of one-handed or two-handed firearm that you are proficient with. You can reload such a weapon quickly.

Prerequisite: Weapon Proficiency (crossbow type chosen) or Exotic Weapon Proficiency (firearm).

Benefit: The time required for you to reload your chosen type of weapon is reduced to a free action (for a hand or light crossbow), a move action (for heavy crossbow or one-handed firearm), or a standard action (two-handed firearm). Reloading a crossbow or firearm still provokes attacks of opportunity. If you have selected this feat for a hand crossbow or light crossbow, you may fire that weapon as many times in a full-attack action as you could attack if you were using a bow.

Normal: A character without this feat needs a move action to reload a hand or light crossbow, a standard action to reload a one-handed firearm, or a full-round action to load a heavy crossbow or a two-handed firearm.

Special: You can gain Rapid Reload multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of crossbow or a new type of firearm.

EDIT: And bah I didn't mean to hit "FAQ" on your post, since it's not needed lol
