I'm making a new oracle curse for a game I'm in but need a little advise concerning the level bonuses. Here's what I have so far.
Oracle Curse of Youth.
The oracle with this curse stops aging physically between the ages of 6 and 12. They continue to mature mentally, but often have a childlike manner to them, either in speech, mannerisms or both. An oracle with the curse of youth has the following changes.
- Medium creature drop in size to small. They take a -4 penalty to Strength, -2 penalty to Constitution and a +2 bonus to Dexterity. They gain the following size bonuses. +1 Att/AC, -1 cmb/cmd, +2 Fly skill, +4 Stealth. Their base movement drops to 20ft.
- Small creature drop in size to Tiny. They take a -4 penalty to strength, and gain a +2 bonus to dexterity. They gain the following size bonuses. +2 Att/AC, -2 CMB/CMD, +4 Fly skill, +8 Stealth. Their base movement drops to 15 ft.
- All youth oracles take a -4 penalty on Diplomacy & Intimidate skills. Being young, people don't take them as seriously.
- Youth oracles take no penalties from aging.
Oracles with the Curse of Youth, cannot take the Time mystery.
Now the thing I'm running into a problem with is the other bonuses the curse grants while leveling. Normally a curse grants additional bonuses relating to the curse itself at levels 5, 10 and 15. I just can't think of anything that fits well.
I put in a +2 inherant charisma bonus at 5, 10 and 15, and my GM has already ok'd it, but it just comes off as kind of boring to me. Granted it's nice since the oracle is a charisma based class, but I want something fun, not just powerful. Anyone have any suggestions on what we could use to fill the gaps?
I think +2 inherent charisma will be broken and way overpowered. This gets really wierd if romance is involved in the game though.
Yeah, that was my original thought too. I put it in more as a placeholder. I think my GM ok'd in because the curse has heavier penalties than other curses at level 1.
It also doesn't help that we're use to power gaming from 3.5. We're trying to bring it down, but, well... it's a work in progress. lol
Agreed on the +2 to CHA every five levels being too much. That's a free boost to all their class abilities, their spellcasting, and many of their skills that will shoot their DCs and scores well above any level reachable by any other PC.
Giving them the Childlike feat for free somewhere along the way is probably a must.
I'd say grant them some sort of bonus to saves against effects related to lust and other adult themes - a Nymph's Blinding Beauty or a Succubus's charms are the first two things to come to mind, things like that. I'm not quite sure how to best word it to cover all the things that it should. Call it "Childish Innocence" or some such.

This gets really wierd if romance is involved in the game though.

Or Baby Herman in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Paradoxically enough, this curse might require a mature player. Or an utterly innocent one.I agree that the Charisma bonus is a bit too good. Especially since the character still gets the bonus from ageing.
As for better levels 5, 10 and 15 boons... I've no idea.

I'd keep the penalty to strength, but drop the one to Con. While children are weaker than adults they have a certain "bouncy" nature that often allows them to survive injuries that should kill an adult. Drop the bonus to the Fly skill as well, I don't see a real reason for it.
The bonus to Dex is also something I'd drop, at least to start. While due to the changing nature of their bodies children are usually a bit uncoordinated, someone with the Youth curse would overcome this, though not right off the bat. Instead, use the bonus to Dex as their level 5 bonus.
I like the minus to Diplomacy, but not Intimidate. Instead, give bonus' to Intimidate as the Oracle levels up, this would reflect the Oracle's growing strangeness to people as an powerful "adult" in a child's body.

Drop the bonus to the Fly skill as well, I don't see a real reason for it.
That bonus to Fly is just the normal modifier to the Fly skill resulting from a size change. That happens to any creature that goes from Medium to Small or Small to Tiny.
But I agree with you about the ability scores: At 1st level, -4 Strength. At 5th level, +2 Dexterity. (I'm not so sure there should be a Diplomacy penalty; children can be rather manipulative when they want to be.)
This makes me think too much of Shuriken Nekogami. I wouldn't allow child characters in any game unless the game was specifically focused around a group of child adventurers (usually as a prelude to those same characters as adults). There are just too many ways for it to be majorly inappropriate, even accidentally.
I like the idea.
However I do have a few comments.
1) Why is the Time mystery disallowed? Threefold Aspect should be off limits for characters with this curse, but otherwise I think the mystery would fit the curse like a glove, with the whole being touch by time flavour.
2) I am not sure about the drawbacks and benefits. Becoming small (or tiny) isn't normally not a drawback for a caster.
Like you, and most else, has said, the cha bonus is too strong.
Starting with the str penalty, and making the dex bonus come later might better fit the model of curses.
PS. the semi-optimizer in me would use this curse to build a character with the gnome spellscar oracle using a rod of wonder to become fine size ;-)

Thanks for all the suggestions. If you have any more, let me know. I like the idea of dropping the Con and Dex bonuses and adding the Dex modifier at level 5.
As for the no Time mystery, my thought was that a curse that made you partially immune to the flow of time would not work well with a mystery that dealt with the manipulation of time.
Maybe the level 10 ability should be to remove the penalty to Diplomacy and Intimidate. I'll run these suggestions by my GM and see what he thinks.

Interesting idea. I suggest just using the young simple template:
Size decrease by one category; AC reduce natural armor by –2 (minimum +0); Attacks decrease damage dice by 1 step; Ability Scores –4 Strength, –4 Con, +4 size bonus to Dex.
A modified form of Childlike is a good idea.
Other features could focus on impulsiveness (bonus to Initiative?), unruliness (bonus to Will saves?), et cetera.
Flintas's suggestion that the penalties to Diplomacy vanish is a great one. It fits well with various legends, concepts, et cetera, of chosen one children leading the masses.
I don't see why the curse would rule out the Time mystery. Resistance to time-affecting magic fits. Maybe at higher levels not even time stop could affect the oracle?
i don't play characters younger than 12 or older than 30. and i have recently been leaning towards the 16-22 range. this curse sounds great once tweaked. though i would play the top age the curse allows.
i want a finalized version for myself. i don't play chonological children as much as i play petite framed fresh faced young adults who could easily disguise themselves as children.
