Finished up Attack on Titan. Here's hoping there's a second season....

Been watching Valvrave the Liberator.... after five episodes, I'm still at a loss to explain this show.

Kill La Kill is a new show that has Gurenn Lagann in it's pedigree, but where Gurenn Lagann is a deconstruction of giant mecha anime, Kill La Kill is a deconstruction of magical girl anime. So far only two episodes are out, with the third due this week but it's been hilarious.

As far as first anime goes... before I knew it was called anime, my first was Speed Racer. Before it became the "Superstation", TBS was showing it back in the day. After that, it was the OVA series Record of Lodoss War.

afro Samurai

bleach

naruto shippuden

one piece

good stuff

Liberty's Edge

Oh gosh, I feel old.

My first anime was either Speed Racer, Space Battleship Yamato, or Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Things are hazy that far back.

First I saw that struck me as'different', primarily because I was old enough to realize it, was either Super Dimensional Fortress Macross or Scientific Rescue Team TechnoVoyager (aka Thunderbirds 2086).

Just finished watching all of the guyver anime and girls und panzer!

What should I watch next....

Hopefully we get the yamato remake. .....

Silver Crusade

I think the first anime show I watched (and didn't realize it was anime at the time) was Lensman. Have no idea how old I was at the time, or even what format I saw it in.

Gunslinger Girl, followed immediately by Paprika and every Ghibli film ever made, because you'll need the uplift after all that pathos.

Liberty's Edge

Ah, Gunslinger Girl. Aka Le Femme Lolita.

I kid, but not by much.

Look up Gargantia on the Verdious Planet. That goes for you too Milk Gan. It starts sorts slow but explains everything by the end. It has giant robots, but it's not really a mecha show. It is some of the best sci-fi I've seen in a while without being pretentious or beating you over the head with it.

Infinite Stratos is fun, but it only really makes sense if you assume that the crazy otaku lady who invented and controls the power suits did so to get her best friend's little brother a bunch of hot power armor pilot girlfriends.

Already own gunslinger girl and didn't care for it. Only own it to shove in to the faces of Whedon fans who think dollhouse is original.

Will consider gargantia.

And the creator of a giant robot doing it all just to get his grandson/nephew/etc. laid is a hallowed tradition.

Silver Crusade

So I noticed that Hulu has The Rose of Versailles. I've heard alot of good things about it so I decided to give it a shot. So far I'm three episodes in and I must say that the presentation of Marie Antoinette as this utterly silly and naive 14-year old girl was something I didn't expect. Her fear of Madame du Barry, based on what I've seen, may be justified but it could just as well be irrational as well.

And then there's Oscar, our blonde-haired protagonist. I'd love to see something where she meets up with Utena due to some fantastic and creative time-crossing story. The two share some similarities, but Oscar's noble upbringing seems harsher than anything Utena may have experienced as a child. Utena chose to be the way she is (emulating an idealization of her rescuer) whereas Oscar was denied that initial choice as her father was so desperate for a son that he declared her to be a boy and raised her as one. Not to say that Oscar is a victim, as she's anything but. She's decidedly feminine, but makes the most of her male position to benefit others less fortunate. Oscar's journey through this series will be interesting to follow as court politics come into play.

Grand Lodge

If you like Lovecraft and anime check out Haiyore! Nyaruko-San. It stars Nyarlathotep aka the crawling chaos, in the form of a wacky high school girl. Alien gods will raise from deep ocean slumber, and sanity checks will be failed, not to mention lesbian fire demons, what's not to like.

Liberty's Edge

It's been mentioned. The inverting of the 'good'/'bad' and the massive CoC RPG in-jokes (among others) are great too. You forgot to mention the Trap in Yellow too.

A few I haven't seen mentioned in this thread:

Dog Days/Dog Days': By Seven Arcs, the same company that gave us the Lyrical Nanoha series. Cinque Izumi is an absurdly athletic young boy (He was runner-up in a show that was basically Ninja Warrior for kids) you gets sucked into a fantasy world to help a race of Dog-People fight a war against a race of Cat-People. Thing is, wars in the world of Flonyard are entirely non-lethal. They basically do it for fun. In the second series, Dog Days'(pronounced "Dash"), Izumi returns to Flonyard, bringing along with him his childhood friend and his cousin, who was the [i]first-place winner of said competition, and will be fighting on the Cat's side. Then Squirrel-people decide to make it a three-way war, and take Cinque's friend Rebecca as their own Hero.

Cute series, cool characters, Nanoha-scale magic.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince: Quirky squad of Mecha pilots fights against an alien invasion. Despite the somewhat basic storyline, the actual execution of it is very well-done.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Yeah I know this remake of the classic anime series has already been mentioned, I just want to seventeenth the recommendation. It's just that cool.

SD Gundam Sangokuden: Brave Battle Warriors: A reimagining of the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (the same story they got Dynasty Warriors from), but with the cast all played by cute versions of various Gundam Mobile Suits. Actually has an English Dub, though they use the Japanese versions of the character names.

Gundam Build Fighters: A young boy in the near future wants to compete in a tournament where plastic Gundam models come to life and battle, but he only has skill in putting models together, not taking them apart, so to speak. Enter a mysterious young man who knows way too little about the world, but can fight in Gunpa battle. Yes, it's even more blatantly merchandise-driven than your average Gundam series. Yes, it's still good. The series embraces the non-seriousness of the setting, gives awesome one-on-one battles between Mobile Suits from all over the Gudnam saga, and even tells a good story in the process.

Log Horizon: Players in an MMORPG find themselves trapped in the game world. Yes, that sounds just like Sword Art Online. LH is however a lighter story than SAO, and has received praise even from people who don't like the other series.

Soundsmore like .hack to me than SAO but...oh wait.

;)

Silver Crusade

I remember SD Gundam from Toonami. And though I'm not a Gundam fan, that show cracked me up.

Saw a little bit of gundam build fighters at NYCC, and I'm already hooked.

Just finished watching The Devil is a part timer! Love Chii-chan she is so cute!

Well, if Freehold likes it.... I'll give it a shot. After I clear off my Hulu plate of anime (to which I added Freezing, BlazBlue, and CROWDS Gatchaman), that is.

I've heard that CROWDS is a little polarizing. It bears little resemblance to the original series, I'll warn you about that right now. I liked the heroine Hajime a lot, but many people accused her of being a Mary Sue (she's deceptively perceptive and a real go-with-the-flow type, so her failures don't get to her). I recommend it on it's own merits, but just don't go into it expecting, well, a Gatachaman version of Yamato 2199.

Silver Crusade

Oh, I'm all too aware of CROWDS effect on the viewer. I've watched the first couple of episodes and the strangeness of it is what fascinates me the most about it.

CROWDS Gatchaman? Tell me of this!

I was just watching RWBY which I learned of from TOZ. It's online only. It has awesome music videos but a fairly typical anime that features Monster Hunters/Academy students. It does have unique gun blade style weapons which are cool.

That's the one Rooster Teeth/Monty Oum were doing, right?

Yep, that's the one.

It's pretty much a total reimagining from the ground up. Some of the same names and concepts are still there, but in totally new forms(Galactor, for example, has become an altruistic online Social Network called GALAX).

At the risk of spoilers(and a possible Wiki crawl), I would recommend checking the series' page on TV Tropes.

I'm finding it pretty underwhelming, over all. The trailers were good, and there's been some moments of brilliance (including all of episode 8, which was awesome and epic) with a lot of meh in-between.

I'm also liking Nora and Pyrrah a lot more than any of the main characters.

Yeah I wish it lived up to those awesome videos more.

The only characters we have seen any real background depth on so far are Wiess, Blake, Pyrrha, and Jaune, so I would expect them to be early favorites... I don't get why Nora is so well loved or why Jaune is not so. Who can't help but love the hapless Jaune to pieces... even if he is a bit slow to get it at times. Nora also seems foolish but for some reason she isn't held in the same light?

I find Nora incredibly amusing. Especially her actions in Episode 8 and her whole sloth gag previously. Though someone like her IRL would probably annoy the heck out of me.

I think a lot of the problems with the series would be easier to deal with if most of the episodes weren't only 3 minutes long after opening and closing credits are taken into account. (It's probably not quite that bad, but it's close.) It's really tough to build any sort of emotion in such brief snippets.

I don't dislike Jaune, though

Spoiler:
him telling Pyrrah off for daring to offer to teach him how not to get himself killed horribly
did him no favors. And yes, I realize he later realized he was being stupid. I guess my big issue is he reminds me of all of the negatives of early Xander from Buffy: TVS with few of the positives.

But I feel like we learned more about the titular characters in their trailers than we have in the show itself, which is not the way it should work. This week's "big reveal" about one of the main four was zero surprise to me. Though it made me wonder

Spoiler:
why she has two pairs of ears, but that's probably just an animation error.

You know there is a 1080p video of the entire first arc up through them getting assigned to teams right? That should cut down on your having to constantly see the openings and credits should you ever rewatch it. ;)

Silver Crusade

Overall, RWBY seems very predictable, and more than just foreshadowing. In all honesty the only thing I feel really unique thus far to the series are the weapons (which are pretty darn awesome!). Doesn't make it a bad show in any way, I in fact eagerly await it each Thursday. I would just like the show to throw us a curveball every now and then.

My theory...

From a male perspective, Nora's behavior is considered 'cute', which Combined with the character design makes an appealing character. I think it has something to do with being non-threatening or somesuch.

Now in the case of Jaune, once again from a male perspective, we'd be looking at a possible role model in the show. Jaune doesn't fit this bill as he isn't very skilled, has little to no confidence, a bumbling fool if you will. Once again, non-threatening, but men don't want to emulate strong male characters.

...of course I'm not a psychologist major and this could be WAY off. But I think this has something to do with it.

Aranna wrote:

My issue isn't the credits themselves but rather how little content there is in most episodes. I realize this isn't a professional operation (though I'd love to see what an anime studio could do with it) but I don't understand the point in releasing what amounts to less content than what you normally see between commercial breaks on TV every week. They may be better served with releasing a 20 minute episode once a month, so you could actually have something resembling a story within each.

Instead we get 3 minutes of Ruby goofing off in class or 3 minutes Jaune being a bumbling idiot or 5 minutes of Weiss being stuck-up without any real payoff.

I don't know if it lacks overall content though. The video I mentioned is 57 minutes long... there are Japanese movies which are that long. They just chop it up too much for your tastes I think.

I know Rurouni Kenshin has been mentioned in here a few times, but how many people got to see the live-action film? If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Rumor has it they've already started production for 2 sequels.

I've watched (and read):
Rave Master
Negima
Kaze no Stigma
History's Strongest Disciple: Kenichi (ongoing)

Some of my favorite animes that I haven't read were:
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Ronin Warriors
Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball Z
Yu Yu Hakusho
Ruroni Kenshin

As much as people may shun me for this, I've watched most of both Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell and I have to say, I enjoyed neither. They were just far too serious for my tastes.

I haven't gotten to Ghost in the Shell yet, but I'm enjoying Cowboy Bebop so far.

On RWBY and Nora.

Nora is a fan favorite because just about every time she's on scene, she does something funny. Whether it's the hyper-active talking clashing with the lazy, silence of Ren, the BOOP!, her 'Queen of the Castle' bit, or her actions in comment (giggling before blowing up a bridge and slamming a huge hammer into a scorpion), she comes off as funny and adorable.

Unlike other comedic characters in a show, it's not at her own, or others' expenses. For instance, the 'sidekick' in a show is often a goofball that gets into messes and makes a fool of himself for laughs while also, generally, being incompotent; Nora is funny without having to do all this. Fans tend to hate the comedic goofball/fool because they just don't really make sense when compared to the main character.

Can you imagine, for instance, if Batman were paired with Scooby-Doo? While Scooby-Doo was funny enough in his show, his antics would be drastically out of place in almost any Batman material (there are certain exceptions).

Unfortunately, Jaune is set up to be the main male lead, and happens to have all the traits of the bumbling sidekick. Jaune makes me think of Beast Boy from the Teen Titans cartoon. Mostly included for comedy, but he certainly has his 'badass' moments, and has real potential as both a hero and leader.

It's worth noting that the "star" of RWBY, Ruby Rose, shares many of the same bumbling qualities that Jaune has, however, we already know Ruby is quite capable in combat, where as Jaune is essentially still learning how to use his sword.

As for the main characters...

We've already seen quite a bit of character development from Weiss, but that's partly because she is also one of the largest sources of conflict in the show right now. She was obviously raised in a less-than-nurturing home with a busy and stressed father who spent more time with his business than his family. Weiss was probably raised by nannies, who, at a young age, Weiss learned were forced to follow her every order. Without a parent to back the nannies, Weiss had free reign her entire life, but probably also yearns to prove she isn't just a spoiled princess.

Blake is set up to go through some major development (as hinted by her trailer). Based off her trailer, it seems likely Blake will leave the team to help the faunus, and might get mixed up with whatever plot whats-his-face has for Vale. This would explain the train incident with Adam, and why Yang was searching for her with Junior.

Ruby, on the other hand, has received her share of moments as well. She's learned she's got the potential to lead, and that she's got some serious social problems. She's a little timid when it comes to people, but in combat, she's fine. She's opened up some to Weiss, and they seem to have a friendly rivalry developing. Ruby also has a mysterious past as she seems to be the adopted younger sister of Yang (Ruby Rose/Yang Xiao Long - different names).

Yang is the one that has had the least amount of development, but that's also because Yang may be the most 'developed' of the characters. She's obviously the oldest, and, though impulsive and hyper, the wisest/most mature. She's got some life experience behind her, and seems to have a fearlessness that she uses to embrace her life, from meeting new people, to challenging new adventures, to facing deadly creatures. I foresee problems in the future pertaining to Yang's impulsiveness that will get her, and the team, in trouble.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Bubblegum Crisis - both new and old versions
One Piece
Fairy Tail
Sword Art Online
Baccano
Soul Eater
FMA - both versions
Lodoss War
Black Lagoon
Ergo Proxy
Appleseed
Ninja Scroll
Stein's Gate
Blood
Samurai Champloo
GunXSword
Evangelion
Trigun
Darker than Black
Slayers
Panty and Stocking

....so much good stuff out there regardless of your particular taste.

Now and Then, Here and There.

The most depressing anime of all time.

I see some great series and movies here but for me, right now, it's all about Fairy Tail!

If you haven't seen it yet you should, I'm only 90 episodes in and I'm riveted... I can't believe how many more there are as well as 6 OAVs and a Movie!

One suggestion though stay with the FUNimation dub or just watch the subtitled version, the Animax dub is terrible =\

Fairy Tail's good...in a lot of ways it's a fantasy version of One Piece. If you like Fairy Tail make sure to watch One Piece...it's slow to start but once you hit the end of season 1 (20 eps or so) and into season two and the introduction of Chopper...you're hooked.

I loved Rave Master, but for some reason, I'm having a hard time getting into Fairy Tail. Rave Master had some over-the-top expressions (like literal jaw dropping), but in the little I've read of Fairy Tail, it seems like almost every expression is an over-done exaggeration. Granted, I stopped reading WAAAY back at the beginning (when they have whats-her-face accept a maid position to sneak into a mansion to steal some books) but it was very slow going, and didn't grab me like Rave Master did.

Maybe I should try watching the Anime to see if that grabs me better?

Liked the manga for one piece, that's about it.

Silver Crusade

One Piece...

Started watching that when 4Kids had their hands on it. Picked it back up when Toonami carried it the first go round. Got back into it with its return to Adult Swim's Midnight Run.

Then I discovered Hulu had it. I dove in headfirst and have not looked back. I'm now into season 6 and am loving the Nico Robin arc with the Pol9 bunch. The fights here are what I wanted from Dragon Ball Z: the protagonists feel like they're in jeopardy. Luffy especially, given his previous encounter with Lucci. Can't wait to see how that plays out.

Other shows currently watching/have watched:

Freezing... not quite what I was expecting, but fun to watch. The Untouchable Queen sure lives up to her callsign.

Kill La Kill is still an awesome show. I'm now on episode 10 and Ryuko is engaged in a tournament to gain the answers she seeks. The use of classical music in this one was icing on the red velvet action cake (William Tell Overture... did I just squee!?!).

I'm into the third season of Fairy Tail and the S class test. Mest has my inner senses just going nuts. Something's not right about him.

BlazBlue is following the events of the games better than I expected. Noel has been fun, but Bang Shishigami... I'm looking forward to seeing him go full out in this.

Watched Appleseed XIII... though I'm more familiar with the original manga thanks to a friend, that show was darker than even I was expecting. Definitely needs more than just those 13 episodes.

After watching Saiyuki Gaiden, I've been going back through the original Saiyuki series to give it context since Gaiden comes before. Its been interesting and some things (especially where Goku is concerned) make more sense to me now.

Edit: I've started Kill La Kill 12 and boy is Ryuko pissed! I think she's in way over her head this go round. Her opponent is Nui Harime and that cute lolita dress-wearing, parasol-wielding girl with an eyepatch is doing a number on my intuition. But, if you saw the end of episode 11, you know what the deal with her is.

I've yet to drop fully into the new wave of anime, but I have followed the Blazblue one. As a fan of the game series, I am pleased.

I just watched Broken Blade. Nice anime, I hope they do more.

Have you seen Grave of the Fireflies? It's a Studio Ghibli film that Disney does not have the rights to (Sentai Filmworks, formerly ADV Films, recently released it on Blu-ray) and it totally beats Now and Then, Here and There in the depressing anime category. Most people that I know who've seen it and other Studio Ghibli work have a hard time reconciling it with the other stuff.

As mentioned in another thread, I watched all of WataMote (No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I’m Not Popular!) and found it both extremely relateable (being a lonely depressed girl with social anxiety issues) and also quite sad for the same reasons.

And it's a comedy.

I watched WataMote some time ago myself, and realized I had similar issues in the past. Makes me feel bad for the main character.

Yeah Watamote is one I started watching and then just gave up on... it wasn't funny at all, you just end up feeling sorry for the poor girl when she just doesn't get it, over and over, as if cluelessness was her main skill. I know that was supposed to be funny, but it ended up quite the opposite.
